Chapter 49: Rey

Darius waited patiently in the shop. Alek came after the fourth customer had left. Behind him came in a small boy, with Fey wings, and the look of wonder on his face.

"Darius, this is Rey. Rey, this is Darius Loreth. He will be the one to tell you about what you need to do," Alek said, and then went behind the counter.

Darius went to the little Fey boy, and noticed that the boy's wings were rough looking, but the golden color still shone through. Darius vowed to make a rune that would repair the wings so that the boy could take flight.

"Hello, you are to be my assistant? I am happy you are here! You will work by yourself, most of the time, seeing as I will be in the Realms of the Forgotten Times for a month," Darius said, and then offered his hand.

"You will give me a job only for a month?" The boy asked, bottom lip quivering.

"No! You will have a job for as long as you want it. And a nice place to stay, meals, clothes, books... Do you know how to read and write?" Darius asked, and the boy nodded.

"The priests in the church taught me," he said, and then took Darius's hand. The grip of the boy was unsure, but his eyes spoke volumes. Darius could see himself becoming a friend with the child.

"Ok, so, your job will be to get the wanted posters from the printing house, and to the tavern where you will be staying at. To hang them up, and take the blood that the bounty hunters will give you in exchange for the runes I will send you, and then send it back to me," Darius explained, and the boy's face brightened.

"I can do that," the child said, and Darius nodded.

"I have no doubts that you can," the demon boy said, and then took Rey's hand. To Alek, he said: "Alek, we will be going. I will set up Rey in a room. You can take care of the printing contract, right?"

"Sure, kiddo. Tell your father I will be bringing pie for dessert," Alek said, and then went back to cleaning the counter. Darius nodded, and then walked out of the shop. Rey followed him with a bounce to his step. The boy had expected that he was going to have to do some heavy lifting, or be a scribe until his fingers bled.

Even if that was the case, I would have still taken the job. Rey thought morosely. This is my big break. I have to do this right.

They were before Orc's eye before they knew it, and Darius walked inside. Alek had not given him back the last wanted poster the demon boy had made, so he had nothing to hang up on the wall. He bit his bottom lip at the lost opportunity.

"You don't have a poster?" Rey asked, and Darius nodded.

"I can make some, until you get the printed ones," the Fey suggested, and then blushed. "But I don't have pens, or paper."

"I can get them for you," Darius told him, glad that he was not going to be missing the opportunity after all. "But first, we need to get you a room, new clothes and shoes, and a meal in your belly."

Rey teared up at those words. He was used to people just taking him for granted. As if he were a part of the background, but not in a good way.

But not Darius. He sees me, and cares.

"Don't cry now, Rey. I used to be just like you, once. Now, I have a soulmate, a destiny sister, and a family. You will have all those things as well, I assure you," Darius then walked to the bar, and waved Tom over.

"One room for the year for Rey here. Make sure it is one of your warmest, best lit ones," Darius said, and the little Fey boy looked at him with wide eyes.

"I can live anywhere. You don't have to ask for their best rooms," Rey protested, but Darius just send him a stern look.

"I do because you are my friend," Darius proclaimed, and then turned back to Tom. "It has to be ready for today."

"Well, my best room just become free. I will set it up in an hour," Tom told him, and then patted Rey on the head. "Meals are whenever you feel hungry, child. I take it Darius will cover them?"

"I will," Darius said, and then took out a coin pouch. He placed it on the counter. "This should cover the entire year."

Tom placed the pouch on the scales, and whistled.

"That is quite a bit of gold, it won't cover just the year. It will cover five. Do you want to prepay?" Tom asked, and Darius nodded.

"Yes, I want to prepay for five years," the demon boy said, and Rey let a sob escape him. Darius turned to him, and hugged him. "You will not be jobless anytime soon. Don't you worry."

"This is..." Rey didn't have the words to express himself. When the other Fey had come and taken him from the docks, Rey expected a day or two of regular meals and a warm bed. But five years? This was a dream come true.

"The least you deserve," Darius told him, and then tugged at his hand. "Come on, we need to get you clothes next. And shoes."

They left the tavern behind, and Darius took the Fey boy from one shop to the next. He got him fourteen sets of clothes, mostly suits, and some clothes for when he was off work. To that, three sets of shoes, three sets of pajamas, a coat, winter ware, and finally, a supply of paper and ink.

Instead of taking the Fey boy back to Orc's eye just yet, he took him home. When Andiel saw the boy, he went full healer mode, and took out salves to begin applying on the fragile wings. Rey stood rooted to the spot, and felt as his wings mended slowly. And with them, his spirit became lighter, and he allowed himself a smile.
