ADAD Chapter 9: Common practice

Darius sat next to Anastasios and Prisila in the lecture hall, and Harvey sat down next to him. Noah and Timothy were on Prisila's other side, with Timothy taking turns in engaging both Prisila and Noah in conversation about the common tongue.

Darius still couldn't understand how feline shifters could just include themselves as an already proclaimed soulmate pair, and he wondered how that would work.

"Attention, please," the instructor called, as the clock chimed for the beginning of the lesson. "Take out your notebooks and pens. We will start off with a dictation, which will be collected and graded."

Groans were to be heard then, and Darius did as he was asked. He rather liked the story that the teacher told them about during the dictation. About a slime that has lost its way, and had ended up in an ice dungeon and evolved.

Darius wondered if he was ever going to end up dungeon delving in the realms that had dungeons. Fairstar didn't have them. Then again, Fairstar didn't have mana cleaning problems.

"Bring your notebooks in here," the instructor pointed at a box, and the children got in line to do just that. As Darius placed his notebook inside the box, it glowed a yellow color. The instructor tsked with her tongue, and the demon boy was quick to get out of the way. The elf woman cleared her throat, and then began to explain, when the last child had placed his notebook in the box.

"As expected from homeschooled children, your writing is atrocious. There were just three green notebooks, and I don't like that," she said, and then took out three notebooks from the box. "Could Prisila Vicente, Anastasios Vicente and Noah Bailey come forward?"

The three came to the front of the class, and the instructor took out three medals.

"For having a neat handwriting, and having gotten through your writing without any mistakes, you are the honor students for today. Instead of the writing practice that the rest are going to do, you will read fairy tales," she smiled then, and handed them the medals. "What would you like? Elven, human, vampire, or something else?"

"I would like a vampire story," Noah said shyly, and he was given a thin picture book.

"And the two of you?" Asked Professor Lily Higgs.

"I would like a human story," Prisila said, and she was given a book as well.

"A demon one," Anastasios stated, and he was given one that had a red cover.

"I don't want to be the one to have to wake you from nightmares, but you picked," professor Higgs said, and then send them back to their seats. "The rest of you, take out your textbooks, and begin to write down the Tale of the Three Bards."

Darius took out his textbook, and flipped to the content. The Tale of the Three Bards was the first one, and he got down to working. The second period was done, and professor Higgs cleared her throat.

"Now, for homework, you are to finish with the Tale of the Three Bards, and write a review of it. Make sure it is no less than two-hundred words. Remember, we have classes together every day, so the homework has to be done by tomorrow. As for the three students who did good today, you have to come up with your own stories, which should be no smaller than five-hundred words. I wish you all a good day," and the professor stood from her seat, and walked out of the lecture hall.

"She wants us to make up a story?" Anastasios worried his lip. "How am I to make up a story?"

"Come now, I think that the important part would be to get it without mistakes," Prisila told her brother, and then looked to Darius. "Dari, do you want us to have dictations in the library after the swimming time? So, you can improve?"

"Is this an invitation for everyone, princess?" Timothy asked, whose notebook had also glowed yellow.

"What does blue mean?" Harvey said, as he looked at all of his friends. "Does anyone know?"

"No idea, Harv," Darius said, and patted the Fey on the shoulders. "But we can have dictations together, and you can improve."

"I hope so," Harvey said, and then looked at his timetable. "Oh, look, math..."

Their shoulders slumped at that, and they followed the throngs of people out of the lecture hall, and into a different one. As they waited for the professor to arrive, they took out their notebooks and pens, and their triangles.

None of them wanted to have anything to do with them. Still, seeing as all the students who were in the class had been homeschooled, the probability that they would need to use formulas today was a big one.

Instead of a professor appearing, writing appeared on the blackboard.

"Ah, so this is professor Anders," Anastasios murmured, and all of his friends turned to stare at him.

"What is so special about him?" Prisila asked, and Anastasios pointed at the writings on the blackboard.

"He is an illusionist. It is said that he does it by regulating his mana with such a precision, that no one can see him. He has done it for so long, that no one remembers how he looked," Anastasios whispered, and then blushed, when the chalk tapped the blackboard twice.

"So, math is useful for something," Prisila said, and Darius began to write down the formulas from the blackboard. If he could turn invisible, then that meant that he could have an easier time as a bounty hunter.

He wondered if the professor was going to teach them this, or if they were going to be spending their time answering questions like: If an inn has twenty guests, and then a group appears, how many guests does it have, if the capacity of the inn is one hundred people and the inn is only 3/4ths full?

When the math lesson was done, they got the homework, which was five math problems to be done by Wednesday, and they left for the next lesson, which was Natural Knowledge. The prelude to Biology, or so Darius thought.
