Chapter 6 : She’s Starting to Babysit – Part 3
After finishing their studies and dinner at home, Shoichi accompanied Amiru to her house. As he had said before, night time was dangerous, so he tried to walk her home as much as possible.
As they walked along the deserted street, which did not even have a sidewalk, Amiru suddenly shouted in satisfaction.
“Yahh~, that was fun. It was nice to see everyone at the nursery after a long time.”
“It’s good that you had fun, but you didn’t get much studying done today.”
“Well, I suppose days like this do happen once in a while. It’s hard to breathe when all you do is study.”
“…I don’t mind, you know. It’s none of my business if you repeat a year.”
“Ehh, wouldn’t it be Sho-chan’s responsibility then?”
“Of course not! Take your own responsibility!”
Well, I might feel a little responsible. If he let that show, even a little, Amiru might get carried away, so Shoichi decided not to show it.
Amiru laughed and said, “Just kidding, just kidding,” with a slightly distant look in her eyes.
“But even if I end up staying, I don’t think I’ll regret it. When I see their smiling faces, I feel so relaxed. I’m glad I was able to take care of them.”
Her face was filled with love for the children. Seeing this, Shoichi couldn’t say strongly that she couldn’t study either.
Looking into his face, Amiru added. “Sho-chan was pretty good with the children, wasn’t he?”
“What? Me?”
“Yeah. I think you’ll make a good father.”
“Oh…”
Shoichi was at a loss for words. He just remembered that Shirokawa-sensei had commented that Amiru would make a good mother.
A good mother and a good father. When they are put together, you can’t help but think of them as a pair.
No, no, no. What am I thinking? This is just a coincidence. Besides, Amiru is…
As he looked at Amiru, she suddenly clapped her hands happily.
“A good father, huh… It sounds fun if you think about it.”
“About what?”
“I was wondering what kind of person you’ll marry in the future, Sho-chan! Will you be sure to introduce her to my family?”
“…Well, that’s coming.”
“What?”
“It’s nothing.”
Shoichi smiled wryly at Amiru, thinking that he could not blame her because it was someone else’s problem.
But he didn’t know why he was feeling slightly depressed.
Well, I guess I’m just tired after everything that happened. It was the first time I’ve dealt with a preschooler.
This is what he decided to accept.
Shoichi let out a long, deep breath and stepped forward again. At that moment–
–Something appealed to his senses.
In hindsight, his hearing came first. The sound of engines broke the silence. Next, he felt an overwhelming mass coming from behind him. Amiru in front of him was in some kind of a flurry and didn’t seem to notice.
In a spur of the moment decision, Shoichi pulled her body along with his own to the edge of the road.
“Watch out!”
“Kyaa!?”
A car raced past at a high speed, accompanied by the sound of a loud honk. It passed through the space where Amiru had been without hesitation.
It was in the nick of time. She and Shoichi were hunkered down on the side of the road.
Shoichi felt fear and relief at the same time and shouted loudly. “Damn it, don’t speed on this narrow road! I’m gonna call the police, you idiot!”
After a moment of venting, Shoichi finally realized.
He had pulled Amiru into his arms and that he had been holding her all this time.
“Ah…”
“……”
In his chest, Amiru was staring at Shoichi, rigid. Shoichi couldn’t help but stare back at her face as well.
Her cheeks were flushed and redder than usual, and her eyes were puffy from surprise. Her breathing was ragged, and it reached Shoichi’s ears.
The close contact of her body felt really soft–here, he finally realized that he had to let her go.
“So-Sorry! Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine… Thanks.”
When he removed his arms, Amiru staggered away from Shoichi. While doing so, she wobbled on her feet. Shoichi hurriedly tried to support her.
“Look, you must have been really scared. Just hold on to me a little longer, okay?”
“Mhmm, it’s fine, it’s fine. I’m really okay.”
“But…”
“Don’t worry about me… Lo-Look, my house is right there. I’ll go home first! Bye!”
Amiru then ran so fast that she almost fell for a moment. “O-Oi,” Shoichi said urgently, but she managed to keep it together and ran without turning back.
“What’s with that girl…?” Shoichi mumbled in dismay and looked vaguely at his palm.

The warmth of the shoulder he had hugged was still there.

When Amiru reached the front of the apartment, she finally slowed down.
Her heart was racing. Not from running, but from before that.
“What’s this…?” She mumbled to herself in a daze. Somehow, she felt like there was a gaping hole in her chest.
Gently, she put her hand on her shoulder. She felt like there was something left there. Something that would fill the hole.
There was nothing. But, she couldn’t forget the face of Shoichi who had hugged her and saved her. It made her feel warm and bewildered at the same time.
Until now, she had never felt this way.
“Eh… What’s wrong with me?”
Amiru let out a deep breath. As before, Shoichi’s face would not disappear from her mind.
There was something wrong with her. She didn’t feel like her usual self.
Amiru then suddenly remembered the conversation she had with Shirokawa-sensei when they met again.
‘Are you Amiru-chan’s boyfriend?’
When this was asked, she was the first to deny it. In fact, she didn’t think it was even possible.
She was still not sure about love yet. Besides, Shoichi was reliable and smart. If he were to go out with someone, he would probably go out with a more suitable, smart, and reliable woman.
She liked Shoichi and considered him to be a good friend. That was good enough, she thought at the time.
But now, something was different. For some reason, she found herself unable to agree with that conclusion. That was because ever since Shoichi saved her, she kept–
“…Mhmm.” Amiru denied it.
The fact that Shoichi helped her was only the trigger.
Long before that, she had felt as if something that had been growing inside her ever since she was a child had suddenly broken through its shell.
What that feeling was, she could not understand.
It was just that her heart felt strangely warm, and the squeezing sensation in her stomach area was confusing her. Whether it felt good, or whether it felt bad, she had no idea.
“Ah, not good. Pull yourself together… It might bother Sho-chan.”
That was what she thought, because her unfamiliar feelings were towards Shoichi. Regardless of whether she had to deal with it on her own, she might embarrass Shoichi by revealing her feelings to him. Judging instinctively, Amiru abandoned any further thoughts.
Even though she abandoned her thoughts, the image of Shoichi still flickered in her mind. “I’m weak,” Amiru murmured in her mind, and in a voice that wasn’t as weak as it should have been.
And at that moment,
“Eh?”
The ringtone of her cell phone rang. It seemed that a message had arrived. She stopped and looked at it, it was from Mea.
[Don’t worry too much about what happened during the day.]
Amiru didn’t get it, so she replied, [What do you mean?]
A response came right back.
[The result.]
[If you don’t want to hear it, no one will blame Amiru.]
“……!”
Amiru stood there with a pale complexion, a complete change from the expression she just had.
Mea’s words from earlier in the day came back to haunt her.
‘And it’s about time, isn’t it? The ‘result.”
‘How about it? Have you made up your mind to listen?’
While typing [I don’t mind] in reply to Mea, Amiru’s lips were tightly pressed together.
“‘The result,’ huh… She said I don’t have to listen… But, I…”
A certain conflict swirled around Amiru, and she blamed herself violently. She felt like she was about to burst into tears.
Although she didn’t want to cause any trouble for him, she wished that Shoichi was by her side at times like this.
Or maybe, just maybe…
At this point, Amiru suddenly thought of a possibility.
If I’m with Sho-chan, maybe I can do it?
But to Amiru now, it seemed like a very awkward act to tell Shoichi about it.
I wonder why. Even though I would’ve been able to say it without hesitation before… I wonder if there’s something wrong with me.
While sighing, Amiru put all her strength into her legs and started walking.
She soon stopped. She found herself in front of the apartment where her room was located. She climbed the stairs, took the key out of her bag, and opened the front door.
“For now, let’s get some sleep.”
There was too much going on, and that was all she could decide.
Then, she entered the room with a different weight in her step from before.
She threw the words softly into the dark, small room.
“I’m home…”
However, there was no one to reply, and the voice only echoed in vain.
