Chapter 12: Chapter 12: TRILLION – Communications Network

Trillion, Ship and Lex spent an entire week coming up with a plan to establish communications with every fabricator.

They slowed down their playback speed, so an hour in real-time represented a week in subjective time. They didn’t want to risk giving more time for fabricators to duplicate.

It would take the team a year to make sure, as every single fabricator had to be accounted for.

Even if they left one rogue fabricator out there to duplicate itself, it wouldn’t take long for them to be in a very similar situation.

During the hunt for the different fabricators Trillion realised she should have changed her playback speed rather than going to sleep.

Trillion stood on the bridge looking at a projected map of the solar system. She lifted a hapticgraphic projection of the solar system from the table, stretching it out so it filled the whole room. “Lex, can you colour all the spaces our communication network covers in green?”

The room changed to a translucent green colour. She panned her head around. From her perspective it looked like the whole room had a subtle green tinge. She zoomed further out into the system. She widened her hands and her perspective changed. The planets in the middle of the system got smaller. The star shrunk. She kept zooming out until she reached the Oort cloud. “That doesn’t work,” she said, noticing she couldn’t tell which sections weren’t covered in green.

She scratched her head. “Try changing only the parts the network doesn’t reach to green.”

Suddenly pockets of green were scattered around the room.

“That’s much better, Lex. Thank you.” She pointed at the green areas. “This is where we need to focus.”

Lex’s orb flashed orange and beeped a few times. Trillion turned to Ship, waiting for him to explain.

“Lex said we needed capabilities for managing this network. Capabilities for dealing with the several-day time delay in communication between some parts of the network. He wants us to build a supercomputer.”

Trillion looked at Lex. “You want an upgrade?”

The orb flashed green. Trillion smiled. “That also means we need more fusion power plants. We’d better start building.” Trillion fought back a chuckle. “Lucky we have a lot of resources now.”
