“Lex, how are we getting the same results?” Atlas said as he sat hunched over his computer. It was the third time he had attempted to communicate with the Dottiens.
His hypothesis wasn’t holding up. He had moved a hapticgram unit outside the ship and coded a new algorithm for duplicating the Dottiens’ language.
Outside of Trillion’s spaceship was a real Dottien and a hapticgraphic projection of one of the Dottiens. But he still couldn’t talk to it.
“It just doesn’t make sense,” he said.
“What doesn’t make sense?” asked Trillion, giving Atlas a fright.
He hadn’t heard her enter his office and knocked his knee on the table as he turned around. “These results I’m getting. They don’t make sense,” he said, rubbing his knee.
“Is that a good thing? I saw the hapticgram in front of my ship had stopped moving. I came in here to see if you’d managed to speak with it.”
Atlas pointed at his computer screen. “Have a look at this.” He played the video. The screen showed a pulsating dance of colours. The Dottien and the fake Dottien rapidly changed colours and patterns on the screen.
Atlas clicked a few buttons and played another video. “You see this? That Dottien is not responding the way it should.”
Trillion didn’t reply. She just kept looking at the screen, slight confusion on her face.
“Every time I think we understand their language, something changes, and all the rules we thought we understood about their language are proven wrong. It somehow gets reset. I think we need to build a life-size version of the Dottien. The hapticgram isn’t cutting it.”

Trillion still looked confused. “Can I be blunt, Atlas?”
Atlas had to bite back his response. He wasn’t expecting Trillion to be so direct. He hadn’t yet finished his explanation of how he was going to create a physical version of the Dottien. Or why the hapticgram didn’t have the fidelity required to speak with these aliens.
He nodded reluctantly.
“You’re not going to solve this, Atlas. This is a problem we need Icarus for.”
Atlas shook his head. “No we don’t. We can’t speak with them because we can’t replicate their language. We need to build something for communicating with these aliens. And that’s what I’m good at.”
“Hmm. You might be right,” Trillion said, “but you think in terms of building things. That’s the solution to everything for you. I haven’t once heard your theories on how their language works. I’m sure you’re thinking about this wrong. If we want to speak with these aliens, we either need to get Icarus, or start approaching this problem the way he would.”
Atlas hated the fact that he knew Trillion was right. He needed to rethink his approach. “How would Icarus do things differently?” Atlas was annoyed that he had to ask.
“Why don’t we ask him?”
Atlas gave her a puzzled look. Did she know something he didn’t?
Trillion smiled. “Your Lex knew where he was. So I sent instructions for the Starnet to his location. He should be online in about a year.” Her expression went dark “I still can’t find Angelique though. Do you know if she made it off Mars?”
