Chapter 12 Spiderman
(Brian P.O.V)
4 days later and the first sighting of Spiderman happened. I'd been keeping a low profile, practicing my powers to better control them. I guess Superman's plight about living in a world made of cardboard had some merit to it. I didn't want to crush someone's hand when greeting them.
Back to Peter though, he was…different. More confident while also being a bit careful. Something had happened on monday at the school cafeteria but I had quickly made short work of Flash before he could antagonize Peter to the point of peter maybe losing control and caving in Flash's skull. This Peter was different to canon. Power changed people and I would be damned if I stood by and watched him do something he would regret due to a momentary lapse in judgement.
The newspapers had caught a glimpse of him swinging through the city and I noticed that his costume was similar to his canon self. At least something was canon- compliant. I had been avoiding it for half a week but I was going to have to meet him as Valiant. I couldn't keep on sneaking around him anymore. This vigilante thing was dangerous and although I doubted he needed it, I would have to teach him the ropes. After all to him he was in it to save people but for me it was a way to polish my skills and get better.
I waited until night time and noticed him leaving before I discreetly followed him. It wasn't easy and for a second I regretted not keeping the organic webbing generation power. Only for a second though. That was Spiderman's motif. Swinging around in a skin tight spandex. I chuckled to myself.
We made way across the buildings as Peter was looking for crime to stop. During that time I started to lose him so I tried to adapt my echo to put more force into my jumps and instantly I noticed a problem. I was leaving cracks behind. That wasn't efficient at all. I was going to have to come up with something that would be my own version of web swinging. How hard could it be to learn how to fly.
But for now I used echo to quickly catch up with Spiderman and once I had him in my sights, I groaned.
(Spiderman's/ Peter's P.O.V)
It had been a few days since my powers had manifested. And what a rush. Suddenly, I was stronger, faster, more resilient (not to the point of catching bullets though), could wall-crawl, swing on webs like Tarzan and not to mention sense danger before it hit me. My reflexes were also crazy. I'm what gymnastics were made for.
So paying heed to Uncle Ben's immortal words, with great power comes great responsibility, I decided to do something about the city's rampant crime. I won't lie to you, it was mostly because of Valiant, the superhero vigilante who had been fighting crime and looking out for the little guy in the city. I wanted to use my powers for something good, even if it was knocking a guy's light out before he could hurt someone. In the grand scheme of things, I knew it wouldn't have that huge an impact but still…I couldn't stand by and do nothing.
It was during my patrol while swinging that I heard a scream. I shot a web to the side of a building and changed direction quickly. I reached an alley where a middle-aged lady was surrounded by five guys. One of them had a knife in hand and was pointing it threateningly at the lady. That wouldn't stand. I swung down and attached a web at the guy with the knife.
"Aaaaah"
He screamed while flying off to hang from the web attached to the ledge of the building.
"Come on guys, I thought this kinda thing only happens in the movies."
I quipped while dodging an unusually fast fist from the another guy. I tripped him and shoved him head fast onto the wall. Of course I reduced the force, careful not to hurt him too badly. Two of the three guys left, quickly settled into a fighting stance while the other brought a hand to his ear.
"It's not him. It's the other costumed freak. The new one."
Ok. These guys were different from the usual mooks and the words of that last guy put me on high alert. I stood Infront of the lady to shield her.
"Ma'am, I need you to call the police."
A timely split is the only thing that saved me. A bullet shot rang out soon after my body had reacted on it's own due to my Spider sense. I transitioned the split into a kick but hit nothing.
" That was a close call newbie. You're lucky I was in the neighborhood."
I heard a voice behind me, causing me to jump and grip the wall on the side while looking down. That voice...
"Valiant?"
I said in confusion. He was dressed in a dark blue outfit that sort of reminded me of S.W.A.T agents and a half mask covering his nose and mouth. His eyes looked really familiar... The lady who I had been trying to save was actually struggling to escape Valiant's hold. A gun lay down on the ground before her. What the fuck was going on?
"Valiant!"
The Mook boss shouted and held up a gun.
"Shoot him."
Bullets started escaping their guns, heading towards Valiant's position. That's when I understood just how big the disparity of power between us really was.
(Brian's P.O.V)
Ugh. These guys again? They never learn do they? I jumped in just as the 'damsel in distress' pulled out a gun and tried to blow Spiderman's brains out. He quickly did a split and succeeded in dodging the shot. Probably due to spider sense. That ability was fucking bullshit.
I quickly disarmed the woman and announced myself. Spiderman jumped away to hang from the wall while shouting my name in surprise. The mercs for that's what they were also backed away cautiously. The head honcho shouted my name with hate and gave the order to fire. 'echo:reverse.' I thought while keeping a calm look on my face.
The bullets hit my body and fell on the floor, their momentum and force stolen and added to a stockpile of energy that was swirling over my body. Now that I had reached qi condensation first stage, my once great control over energy had advanced further. If I found a way to sustain the kinetic energy from hits inflicted on my body and use it for something more than just releasing it...I would become a nightmare to fight.
For now though, that was far from my capabilities. The energy twisted to my right hand and copying Deku, I released a shockwave from my finger blasting the 3 guys away. One the street light on the sidewalk, the second hit a dumpster and crumpled down like a puppet without strings and the last was sent flying while screaming.
"Catch him before he splits his head on the ground."
"R...right."
Spiderman responded and quickly shot a web, saving the guy. I calmly walked to the mercenary after zip tying the woman, not before knocking her out of course. I slapped the guy a little on the face.
"Hey, if you're done screaming, maybe you could tell me why you keep on doing this. You know what the height of insanity is right?"
"Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result."
Spiderman added from the side. I nodded and stared at the guy, channeling a little bio-electric aura to my eyes for more effect. He started shaking.
"I'll... I'm not saying a thing!"
He shouted while shaking. I rolled my eyes.
"I don't need to ask you anything. I already know who has been sending you. A different group each time. Makes you wonder where he's getting all this money from while I've been making sure to bring him down. Guess it's harder to take down a criminal empire than I thought. Oh well."
I knocked him out and turned to my fellow vigilante. We could already hear sirens coming this way.
"Follow me."
I told him and with echo jumped on top of the building and started running away. I could feel Spiderman keeping up with me which prompted me to move even faster. 5 minutes later I stopped on top of that abandoned building where my base was.
I removed my mask and turned around at the huffing red and blue clad hero.
" How...how fast are you?"
I laughed.
" Hey Pete. Never took you for a spandex kind of guy."
He quickly looked up, shocked.
"Brian?"

I sheepishly scratched my head.
"Yeah. I was waiting for the right time to tell you."
"Tell me what? That you're Valiant?"
He sarcastically said.
"I..."
"Fuck you."
I was taken aback by the insult. We looked at each other for a while before we both burst out laughing, instantly easing some of my worries. Guess he had his suspicions.
"I...I can't believe you just said 'fuck you' to me. Aunt May would wash your mouth out with soup."
"Yeah she probably would and then ground both of us forever."
"What? Why would I be involved?"
He shrugged.
" I don't know. Maybe by association."
"That's a load of bull Pete."
We finally calmed down and sat to watch the New York skyline.
"Do you remember when we were young and Uncle Ben would take us out of the city to our old cabin by the lake and we would just lay on a blanket while watching the stars?
He started.
I nodded and gently smiled.
"Yeah and you couldn't stop geeking out, throwing around random facts about astronomy and space.
He shoved me.
"Stop exaggerating."
I laughed while shaking my head.
"That's the crazy part Pete, I'm not. You were a scary kid."
"Says the martial arts prodigy not to mention the superhero, Valiant."
"Touche."
"Do they know?"
I didn't need to ask who he was talking about.
"Nope. Same reason I didn't tell you. I mean, how do you tell your loved ones that you're out there most nights risking your life for a selfish reason?"
I looked at him to gauge his reaction.
"Selfish reason? I don't know what you mean but to me, you just do. You tell them and hope they do their hardest to convince you to stop."
I stared at him stoically.
"Really Pete? You're going to look at me like that and say those words while doing exactly the same thing I am? That's hypocrisy."
He looked away embarrassed.
"I'm worried for you ok? I've had my suspicions about your nightly activities. You started going out around the same time that Valiant began fighting crime and from there it was easy to connect the dots though I didn't know for sure. It didn't make it any easier to sleep while knowing you were out there doing something."
I sighed, getting up. This talk was getting too intense for me.
"I'm not gonna stop doing this Peter and I know neither will you, and I also know that between us, I'm much more experienced in this superhero gig. So why don't we save this whole 'who's wrong a d who's right' discussion for another time and go beat up some criminals? I'll show you the ropes and you can help me keep the city safe. What do you say?"
He ended up agreeing and soon after I led him to our destination.
"Hey B...Valiant, there's a story between you and those guys we beat up. Mind sharing?"
I stopped the urge to groan again.
"Short version, there's a crime boss called Bone Face, if you're guessing his real name is Boniface, then you're right. Anyway, I've been hitting his operations and taking down his men. In retaliation, he's been trying to set up traps to catch me off guard and kill me. Those guys were just one of the many groups he's sent after me."
Peter looked at me skeptically, though I couldn't tell it from the expressionless mask.
"That's the short version? Then what's the long one?"
"Oh trust me it's so much better. We've got unicorns, a princess in a castle guarded by a bone dragon and surprisingly a dwarf with good investment skills, he knows how to play the market and get this, he wants to be the next Bill Gates."
Peter deadpanned at my joke.
"The fact that I can't tell if you're serious or not is unsettling."
I chuckled.
"You have much to learn my young Padawan. Now, wanna crash a party Spiderman?"
