Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Fruits of my Labor

As I open my eyes I awaken to utter darkness, with the sounds of crickets and other animals you might hear in the dead of night. “Ugh that was rough I am totally exhausted” I say as I slowly sit up, my eyes slowly start to adjust the darkness. “I wonder how long I was out for, my will to survive skill activated a few minutes before I passed out I guess that should shed some light on it” I open my system screen ignoring the pop up menus for now and scroll to the skills screen.

“Oh wow about 3 and a half hours that’s quite a long time, I should count my blessings this ape didn’t have any buddies with him or I would be ape shit by now” I say giving the corpse of the Red Eyed torment ape a good smack. As soon as my hands come into contact with the ape, I receive quite the surprise.

I should stop being surprised by this thing, but I don’t think I will ever not be surprised by this thing. There is really no downside to looting this ape and who knows maybe I’ll get something cool. I stand to my feet and say in my best Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello voice “One of us had to die. With me, it tends to be the other guy.” I move my hand over to the screen and click yes. As soon as I press yes, I watch as the corpse of the Ape starts to develop glowing bright red cracks starting from his wound on his chest that still had the piece of tree sticking out. The glowing red cracks started at a snail’s pace and quickly picked up speed until the red cracks enveloped its entire body. Once his entire body was covered in these mysterious glowing red cracks, the ape started to dissolve in a grotesque fashion. It started with its fur being melted away and next was its skin which provided me with the gross image of seeing its muscle tissue being shown.

“I could have done without seeing this” I say as I close my eyes. I continue to close my eyes as I listen to sound of dissolving flesh and bone until the hissing noises comes to an almost complete stop. I take a peek with one eye at the corpse, and I see the last little bit of his internal organs being dissolved. Once the body is fully dissolved black smoke rises from where the corpse was residing, it flickers and dances almost like its alive. The black smoke glides towards me and I take a step back afraid of this new sight, but as I back away the black smoke darts towards my right hand and begins to sink into the skin on my hand. I feel a coldness in my hand it almost feels like the complete opposite of when I activate a skill. When I activate a skill there is a warmth in my body and my body feels like it automatically knows what to do, but this feeling is cold and feels very foreign to my body. I receive a new pop-up system menu as soon as the black smoke as fully been absorbed into my skin.

“Oh man I was completely outmatched with this guy, but he’s the one who’s nothing now but black smoke and a red smudge on the floor” I say as I shrug my shoulders. “Alright let’s look at the rest of the goodies that I got”.

Okay so an Ape hide, not sure how that’s going to be helpful, but I’m sure I’ll make use of it sooner or later.

“Now it’s the bones” I sigh “I guess I’ll tap into my native American roots and use every part of the buffalo.”

“Ughhh Ape meat it sounds really tough, I’ve never had ape meat before. Granted I’ve never had anything more adventurous than a T-Bone steak” I say as my mouth starts to salivate with the flashbacks of steak goes through my head.

“Dollar Dollar Bills Ya’ll” I say as I imitate the Wu-Tang clan.

“What’s this about a soul, that sounds really weird and ominous. Will I get a soul of everything that I kill, and what does that make me will I become one of those weird hunter guys in the outback with a trophy room of all my taxidermized defeated foes.” Just the thought of that creeps me out, and plus what am I supposed to do with a soul.

“Oh hell yeah I’m drinking that right now” I say as I open my inventory screen and scroll past to the Lessor potion. I click the icon of the potion and a glass vial similar to a test tube beaker appears in my hands. I undo the cork and examine the vial of red liquid and swirl the red liquid around and give it a good sniff. To my surprise it smells like cherries, I could have sworn this was going to smell like nothing or smell like a drug store pharmacy. I lift the vial towards my face and I start to lift it to my lips.

“Am I really going to drink something that I technically found inside of a monster” I say as I lower the vial back down.

“On the other hand, this system hasn’t let me down yet and my body still hurts from the fight with the ape” I say as I bring it back to my lips. “Well as they say, nothing ventured nothing gained” I say as I throw back the red liquid into my mouth.

“The lessor potion may smell like cherries but it most certainly does not taste like cherries” I say as I hack and cough at the taste of the lessor potion. The taste of the lessor potion reminded me of when I was a kid, and I went to the gas station and got a soda that was all carbonation and no syrup and my stupid kid brain just drank it no questions asked.

“Well lets see how effective this lessor potion thing is”

I feel my muscles enlarge and my skin become tight as well as the pop up menu disappears. I pat myself on my arms as I feel that my arms have gotten a little bigger. Not only have my muscles gotten bigger but my skin as become a little thicker. The logical reason is that the rewards to my stats doesn’t just have an increase to my stats but also my physical appearance. Oh god does that mean I’ll look like roided up freak if my strength gets high enough. I shiver at the thought.

“It looks like my recovery is coming along nicely” I say while stretching my arms out. I should probably test out this new skill while I have the time. I jump up and down to shake the metaphorical cobwebs off my rigidly bones and I sprint towards one of the trees and climb it just as fast as I did when I was running for my life but It feels somewhat different. It feels like I’m climbing the tree off of muscle memory like I have done this a thousand times before instead of just doing it off of survivals instinct like I did before. I reach the top of the tree in a matter of a second and swing from tree branch to tree branch with ease and grace that I never thought possible.

“This feels incredible, thank you magically video game system thingy” I say while chuckling to myself as I continue to fly through the trees with my new acrobatic skills. I continue to test my new acrobatic skills for another twenty minutes, until I feel myself starting to get a little exhausted. I spot a low hanging tree branch and I use my new skills to get to the branch quickly and I do a front flip off the low hanging branch and onto the ground.

“That was awesome I feel like a badass”

What should I do next, I think to myself, I don’t think I’ll be able to explore the island that well with it being dark outside. So that leaves me the option to make camp somewhere until morning. But here lies the problem I think to myself, I have no idea how to make a campsite. I think the bear minimum would be a simple tent, and a campfire. I could use some of the pieces of broken trees that the ape destroyed and use some of the palm tree leaves as some sort of covering. That sounds like as good as Ill be able to make for the time being. I walk back to my previous battle ground that I had with the ape and gather pieces of the destroyed trees into a pile.

 “Step one complete, next step it’s time for some leaves” I say as I start to climb the tree with the most leaves. I get to the top of the tree with ease thanks to my acrobatic skill and begin ripping leaves off the tree while letting the leaves fall to the ground. I continue doing this until the tree is bare of leaves, which gives me the view of night sky. The sight of the night sky makes me tremble so much I almost lose my grip of the tree.

“Why the hell are there three moons”
