After I started my journey, let’s see… ah, here.

What’s the best way to get stronger? Should I just train for my whole life? Maybe get a job that requires lots of strength, so I become stronger by working? No, that all seems far too boring… I need a way of getting stronger that’s actually fun… maybe I should be an adventurer… no, being an adventurer would be far too dangerous… Wait, isn’t that the whole point? I’ve decided, I'll become an adventurer!

“Hello! This is the guild, correct?”

“Yes, it is, are you new around here?”

“Yeah! I’d like to register as an adventurer!”

“Okay, just sign these papers, and we’ll have you take the physical exam tomorrow.”

“Sounds good!”

That night, I could barely sleep because of how excited I was.

It’s time! Today’s the day I take my physical exam! I wonder how many other people will also be taking it…

“Ok examinees! Please line up here and go in when there is nobody in front of you and the examiner inside yells ‘next!’.”

This is so exciting!

“Next!”

It’s finally my turn!

“Name?”
*@#%, sir!”

“Right, what are you skilled in?”

“I am good at sword fighting, not good at archery, and I've never tried magic so I don't know my proficiency with it.”

“I see… ok, please proceed to the outdoor area and wait for your examiner to arrive.”

“Yes sir, thank you sir!”

“So you’re the one I'm testing? You look weak. Might as well give up now, kid.”

“No! I won’t give up, so hurry up and start the test!”

“If you say so.”

In an instant, he has his sword out of its sheath and coming straight towards my throat. How am I supposed to dodge this?! I pull out my sword too, and barely manage to block his sword.

“Come on, with skills like those you won’t be able to kill a single goblin!”

He rushes at me, and swings his sword wildly, cutting my face a few times in the process.

“You can’t even dodge that? Weak! Far too weak!”

He lunges forward again, trying to stab me, I manage to dodge, but only by a little.

“Damn! Missed you again! Why won’t you just stay still!”

Despite all this, I'm incredibly calm. I won’t be able to beat this guy, not in a million years. However, if I manage to hold out long enough, they may consider it a pass anyway. I just need to keep dodging.

“Come on! Just give up already! You haven’t even tried to hit me yet, how do you expect to pass this?”

Don’t listen to him. Focus. Just keep dodging.

“Give up!”

He attacks again, this time not trying to hurt me, but rather provoke me into fighting back.

“Come on, aren’t you gonna try?”

Focus. Don’t let him hit you.

“Hey, aren’t you guys done over there?”

“No, this stupid kid won’t give up!”

“Well everyone else is done, so just give the poor kid a pass so we can go home already.”

“Tch. I guess you win this time, boy. Come back once you’re capable, and then we’ll fight again!”

“Thank you, sir.”

That was so stressful! I had to be fully focused the entire time or I would have probably died! I barely even noticed how long we were fighting for. But that doesn’t matter! The important part is that I passed and that I'm an adventurer now! I can’t wait to start!

Little did I know, I would have to wait a week before I was allowed to start adventuring.

Finally, the time has come. Today’s the day I go on my first quest! I wonder what I should do… medicinal plant gathering, no… slime hunting, no… hmm… oh! How about this one! Wolf hunting! I’ll accept this one.

“I’m sorry, but your rank isn’t high enough to do this quest.”

“What?”

“Currently you are at F rank, you need to be D rank to do the wolf hunting quest.”

“What?! But everyone else that tested on the same day as me was already rank D when they started!”

“Because they scored better on the physical assessment.”

“There was a score system?”

“Yes.”

“Damn… then what quests can I do right now?”

“You can do slime hunting or medicinal plant gathering.”

“Are those my only options?”

“Yes.”

“Then I'll do the slime hunting one, please.”

“Of course. Good luck!”

“Yeah, thanks.”

What a bummer! I was excited to fight some strong monsters, but I guess I have to do these monotonous rank F quests first. Now, where are those slimes?

Hm? Oh! A slime! I guess I'm in the right spot. Now, let’s get hunting.
