Chapter 17: The Register Test

Rigen's perspective - Right after sending the letter to Shera's place

I'm now walking out of the Messenger's Guild, the Adventurer's Guild is just far away from it not so far, just a few steps through the street. I walk right up to the Guild, but don't know why my feeling seems very strange, something is missing or so.

Oh! Advisor hasn't spoken a word since I got out of the inn, how? It has been broken because of hitting on the ground so much? 

Then I touched my ears, alright! Seems like I forgot the airpods, they may now be left inside the inn, maybe that is the reason why Advisor can't talk to me.

Then I looked around the street and get into the alley nearby which has no people in it.

I turn off the special conversation, then I heard Advisor talk to me.

"Seems like you can hear me now!"

"Hey, Advisor! Sorry about that, but now I need you to stay quiet until I get back to the inn and get the airpods, okay!"

"Roger that!"

Then I get back to the street and walk like usual, the Adventurer's Guild is now in front of me, seems not as big as the one in Ailia Town but it's not pretty bad.

Then I open the Guild's door and get inside, looks like there are not so many Adventurers going inside and outside here.

In my knowledge of the Fantasy fictions that I read, the Adventurer's Guild is the big guild, it gathers many people from all over the place.

Seems like this town doesn't have many interesting quests for the Adventurers, huh?

Then I look around, there are about 17 to 18 Adventurers inside the Guild. 

Some of them talk to each other, some looking at the quest papers stuck on a big board on the right side of the place, and seem to look for the missions.

I also look around to find the maps of the countries, I hope I can at least find the way to Warsaw Kingdom, but oddly the maps only show the area of the town and the regions around it.

There is also a large map that shows Jager Kingdom and its around Kingdoms, it doesn't show any information about Warsaw Kingdom.

"Hey! You over there!" - A voice called me

Then I turn back to see, that the person who called me is one of 5 Guild girls who are standing at the stall.

I slowly walked toward that Guild girl, when I standing at the stall, I realize that the Guild girl seems very slim. She has brown short hair, her face seems very pale.

"Oh, sorry miss! I was just looking at the map to find the route to Warsaw Kingdom!"

"Our Guild only has the maps from the local areas, if you want to find the map to another country, you must go to the Guilds of the other Kingdoms to find it!" - That guild girl explained to me

"Thank you for the information, miss! Oh! I'm not coming there for the map but the register!"

"Your voice seems strange, never mind! I see that you are not the people here, maybe you lost your way to getting back to Warsaw Kingdom, that may be the reason why you kept looking at the map!"

"You came here for the register, mister! So the price for the registration costs 50 Atta coins!" - That guild girl said to me

Then I took out 50 Attas from my bag and gave the Guild girl the money for the register, after taking the money, that Guild girl also asked me one more.

"Thank you for joining the Adventurer's Guild, mister! What's your name, mister?" - That Guild girl asked me

"Do I allowed to hide my identity?" 

Of course, I don't want my identity to be exposed even though this country is very safe for the powerless.

"You do, mister! But you must provide us with your real identity on your register paper! Of course, that information will be hidden and only the manager of the Guild knows!" - That guild girl said to me, I feel so relieved 

Then I see that Guild girl taking out a fur paper and holding it in front of me, she also holds a pen and was about to write my name down when I speak to her.

"Can I do that myself?"

"Mister! You know how to write and also to read?" - That guild girl asked me in shock, I don't know why

"My country is not that wealthy, only the noble can go to school, most of the people here are only taught to read the simple characters to identify their names!" 

"Why don't you join this Guild to become a Guild reader, mister? You only have to read the letters for the people who can't read!"

"That job seems very simple but the income will be very high paid when you do that!" - That guild girl explained to me

"What?"

Then I look around, I'm shocked, seems like I didn't pay much attention when going here, I see some of the Adventurers going towards 2 men standing near them.

They wear black suits and now are reading the meaning of the characters on the quest papers for the Adventurers to know.

Then I also notice at the time I was finding Shera's message on the big boards on the streets, I also saw some people standing near the black-suited men, they were also reading there. 

I didn't notice that, I thought that was just the behavior of the people here when reading the letters.

Seems like this world is not much different from the Middle ages, the people in that era were also illiterate.

"Anyway, mister! If you want to write your information, here! As you wish!" - That guild girl talked to me and gave over for me the letter and the pen

Then I take the pen and the letter to write, a few minutes passed, I am now done writing, I hand over the letter to the guild girl.

That Guild girl is now focusing on the details of the letter that I wrote.

"I see! Seems like you cannot cast magic, I had heard about your rumors in Attenta Kingdom, our hostile country, but I won't ask you how could you get to our border, Sir!"

"I will immediately prepare for you a test about your fighting skill, please wait for me! I will come back soon!"

"Cough! Cough!" - That guild girl started coughing very much, I feel so worried about her

"Are you alright?"

I think now I know why Shera said to me the lives of the powerless are very struggle, I hope I can help that Guild girl but seems like I must stay silent for now. How can I save her when I don't have any plans for it?

"Just make sure don't push yourself so much! You must care about yourself too!"

"Thank you for your words, Sir! But I must go now to prepare for your test!" - That guild girl said to me then went inside a room seems like a meeting room

Then 5 minutes passed, that Guild girl came out of the room, she looked towards me and said.

"Please follow me, Sir!"

That Guild girl opened the stall's door, led me to an empty room and went downstairs that looks like a basement. Inside that basement, I looked around while walking and see some people in the area standing near the fences away from the scarecrows about 50 meters.

There is a man who seems like their examiner orders them to shoot the scarecrows away from the fences.

"Fire arrow!" - One of the examinees casting their magic

Then I see some fire objects flying out and hitting the scarecrows, maybe the area I see is a place to test the people that can cast magic.

Then the Guild girl stopped at a door, she opened it and told me to go inside. 3 men are standing inside it, the room itself has a big area for sparring, seems like the 3 men here are my examiners.

"Sir John! Please feel free to choose the weapons for the sparring on those shelves, remember to hand over your sword on the table in front of you before choosing the weapons!" - That guild girl reminded me

Then I immediately place my sword on the table, I get to the shelves and choose an average length wooden sword and a wooden dagger, then I step onto the sparring area.

The examiner is now standing in the area too, he seems to be a big guy, he is holding a wooden spear and standing there, just away from me about 15 meters, waiting for the signal for the test.

"Sir John! You don't need to win the examiner, you just need to fight as hard as possible for the examiner to score you and set you in a proper rank!" - That guild girl explained to me

"Then, 3, 2, 1, fight!"

I'm now focusing on that examiner, he is holding the spear tightly, didn't make any moves at all, it's very hard to see his attack now.

I also did not move to lure him onto me, few minutes passed, the examiner seemed to accept that I won't come to him for the fight.

Then he slowly moved towards me, I focused looking on his moves, then suddenly that examiner swings his spear at me from far away then slowly moved back.

The spear is very convenient when fighting from far away but when it comes too close, the sword will beat it completely, I must find a way to move towards him to beat him up.

Then I ran towards that examiner, he got surprised and swung his spear at me, I managed to block that strike by using my sword, then I hold his spear tightly, trying to grab it from his hands.

But seems like that plan is a little struggle, I drop my sword and use both hands to hold that man's spear, trying to divert his direction by using my strength.

That examinee seems cannot hold any longer, he uses his leg to break the wooden spear in half, then swings it to me.

I managed to dodge the strikes, maybe my reflection improved a lot because of playing too many VR games but I don't have any experience of using a spear so the spear later flew out of my hand after taking too many strikes.

Then I rushed to that examiner, grabbing his hands to hold the spear from swinging around. I give him a hit to the head by using my head.

That was very hurtful, but I endure the pain and managed to throw the spear away from the examiner.

That man then punched me into my face but I managed to dodge it and step back, he rushed to me in a hurry but I grabbed his shoulder and pulled him onto the ground.

Then I take out the wooden dagger from the belt on my back and point to that examiner's throat.

"John! The test is over! You may end it now!" - That guild girl said to me 

After hearing what that Guild girl said, I stop pointing the dagger at that examiner, then I return the wooden weapons for the sparring to the shelves and take back my sword.

"Sir John! Please wait for me at the stall! Your result will be announced, soon!" - That guild girl said to me

Then I went with that Guild girl out of the basement and walked to the stall, then she went back to the basement for the discussion. I hope my result will be positive!

Cily's perspective

Seems like the test about the candidate John Rigen is over, I'm now standing with my people to discuss the rank that we would set to that man.

"What was wrong with you, Salas? I saw that man was just an amateur in that earlier fight!" - The man who said to Salas, the man who fought John, he seems very annoyed about that

"Did you just underestimate him? I see that man only had the advantage about his strength, he could not make any proper techniques on using the spear of the sword!" - The most elder examiner in the room, Ura, talked to Salas

"No! No! You people cannot judge me when only looking at the fight, you must fight that man to know how hard it was!" 

"I'm an experienced soldier, I know it will very odd, but than man John Rigen didn't know anything about using the weapons, he could not do a proper fighting stance but his strength was that good!"

"He was able to throw me onto the ground, seems like that man is also an experienced soldier, but he didn't know much about using the sword or even the spear!"

"That man was even holding my spear very tight, I was almost lost it if I didn't break the spear in half, I think this man is not a rookie, he must be promising for our Guild!" - Salas explained to us

Rigen's perspective

Seems like 10 minutes have passed since I got out of the basement, I'm now waiting for the Guild girl to come out and see me at the stall.

Oh! Seems like she has come, she is holding a thing looks like a card, the Guild girl then looks at me, she hands that thing to me.

"Congratulations, Sir John! You have been awarded to E Rank, the result is very that good!" - That guild girl talking to me while giving me the Adventurer card

Then I take that card, seems like this thing only shows my name to identify me as an Adventure.

"Oh, before you step onto a quest, Sir John! Let's me brief you on the Ranks of the Adventurer's Guild!"

"The Adventurer's Guild contains from Rank G, the lowest to the highest, Rank S! Your Rank E means you are an experienced Adventurer an-" - That guild was trying to talk but I stopped her

"I already knew about the Rank before, miss! Just tell me the benefits of being an Adventurer or something more I didn't know about it!"

I already knew the rating stuff by reading and watching too many isekai novels, animes and mangas, I just need her to tell me things that I didn't know.

"Then you can take the quests from the other countries if you have the Adventurer card, you can even freely get to the border of the other countries when you show the border guards the card!"

"If you are an Adventurer but you didn't make any quests within 6 months, the punishment will be!"

"Downgrade your Rank to the lower Rank or your card will be taken away from you if you are a newcomer!"

"You may be allowed to do it only if you have someone in your group who reached that Rank!"

"Sorry, Sir! I think I will done the talk here, I hope you will succeed on the path of becoming an Adventurer!" - That Guild girl said goodbye to me and went back to her work 

I hope she will be alright!

Maybe I will now take a quest, or go back to the inn to get the airpods and some weapons. Or go ahead to the place of the man who called himself Mentor that told me to come for learning swordsmanship.

What should I choose first? I need more time to think about it!
