Talia slept as best she could on the driver's seat, pushed all the way back. It was hard to move around because the little boy insisted on lying on top of her.

His warm sticky face was plastered onto her chest and his grubby arms were wrapped around her neck as he slept fitfully, occasionally waking up with night terrors.

She couldn't blame him.

All night long, the thunder and lightning rumbled and roared along with the wind and rain slamming up against the SUV. It had been fearsome even for her, and she was an adult.

By morning, the rain had settled down into a steady downpour, but at least the heavy winds had abated.

As soon as it got light, she tried calling the number again. This time, the phone answered on the first ring.

"How is Devin?"

Talia compressed her lips. No friendly greeting or even the customary 'Hello'. What kind of a rude bastard was this person?

"He's still sleeping. I just wanted to get your address so I can take the child back to you. I don't want anything from you so don't offer anything."

She said all that as quickly as she could, not wanting him to interrupt her with talks about ransom money.

There was a pause on the other end. Then the male voice continued.

"I have sent the address into your phone inbox. Where are you at this time?"

Talia looked up at the Crisis Care Center sign attached to the building that she was parked in front of.

"I'm at a storm shelter in Biloxi, Mississippi."

"What the hell are you doing in Mississippi???" The voice barked at her.

"I was on my way to evacuate from the storm when I saw the boy running around in the middle of the road. The storm was getting fierce so I picked him up and kept going."

"He was in the road?"

"Yes. It was pouring rain and he was running in the middle of the highway. He's lucky he didn't get run over!" She was starting to get upset.

"Why was there nobody to watch over him and hug him?" It was Talia's turn to get upset. "The little ones get VERY SCARED when storms hit!"

The male voice toned down a bit.

"I did have someone watching over him. I fired her last night because she lost sight of the boy."

Talia heaved a sigh.

"Look. It's still raining and it's barely 8 A.M. Let me feed Devin some food and then I'll be on my way back to New Orleans. It should only take me a couple of hours driving time."

"It's still raining quite hard. Drive carefully." The male voice said.

Talia thanked him and hung up.

Even though she knew that he was only concerned about the welfare of his son, it still made her feel a bit warm inside knowing he was at least vicariously concerned about her.

She needed to feed herself and the boy, but first, she needed to find him some clothes. Devin couldn't wear a towel all day.

As luck would have it, she found a small general store that had a few simple items of clothing, so she grabbed a bag of diapers, a small tee shirt and a pair of shorts for him.

She cleaned him up as best she could inside the women's restroom and dressed him in his new clothes. Once he was clean and his hair had been brushed, he actually looked like a male model baby.

A quick run through a Mickey Dees fast food drive-thru resulted in a hot cup of coffee for herself and some chicken nuggets and milk for Devin, and they were on their way back to New Orleans.

The drive back was uneventful and stress-free. Since the worst of the storm had passed, there was no more terrifying lightning and thunder.

Devin had finished his few pieces of chicken nuggets and was sleeping with his greasy smeared face pressed up against the leather seat. Gone was the terrified expression of the day before. His face was calm and peaceful as he slept on.

A small twinge went through her heart. She would soon reach his home and then she would never see this child again. The thought made her a bit sad since she had become oddly attached to him.

All too soon, her car reached the address the man had given and she turned into the newly paved lane.

Stately magnolia trees lined the place, their huge white flowers in full bloom. The storm had barely passed but the workers were already out, picking up storm debris.

As her SUV moved farther into the property, a final turn revealed a stately Antebellum mansion. It had a grand entrance and numerous Greek pillars holding up opulent covered lanais and balconies on all four floors.

The white mansion with its slate black roof loomed into view beyond the gnarled oak trees which had shrouded the front as a perfect living screen.

Talia's eyes grew larger and larger as she realized something monumental.

The perfectly paved lane leading to the place had large double iron gates at the entrance that automatically opened when she turned into the lane. As soon as she passed through, they automatically closed behind her.

It was as if someone had been manning the gates and was waiting for her to enter before they shut the gates behind her. There was no way it would open for just any old car trying to get through.

The magnolia-lined paved road cut through a garden the size of a small park, filled with workers cleaning up storm debris.

That was also amazing because normally it took days or even weeks to get anyone to come out and help with the clean-up effort from a storm this large. The fact that these workers were already here working meant that they hadn't been called in from anywhere. They actually resided within this estate and were working here!

Devin's parents looked to be incredibly wealthy people! These were the kind who would not even normally be in contact with the regular common folk living in the city beyond their gated estate.

Talia sighed. No wonder the boy's father thought Talia had kidnapped him for ransom money.

She slowed the car down and turned off the engine. The rain had eased up a bit so she could bring him inside without getting all drenched. It was a tiny blessing that Talia was grateful for.

The lack of movement and noise woke Devin, and for a moment, his face was distressed. But then he saw her and his eyes lit up.

Holding his arms out, Devin reached for her, babbling out some nonsense words.

Talia picked him up and carried him out of the car. She took a deep breath and looked up at the imposing double doors of the Antebellum mansion.

Wealthy people made her nervous because they were so unpredictable.

God she hoped Devin's father would not do something unexpected such as press charges against her for kidnapping or something.

She was about to walk up the steps onto the porch when someone approached from her from behind.

"Devin!" A male voice called out.
