"Uncle Van?" Talia turned back to Devin.

"Permit me to introduce myself. My name is Vander Greyson. I am from Paradisio."

Talia nodded. "My name is Talia Fabian and this is Devin Blaxtone," she gestured at Devin with her chin.

"No, no. That's not his name." Vander Greyson shook his head.

"What?"

"His surname is not Blaxtone. It is Greyson."

"Pardon?" Talia blinked in confusion.

"His father is my older brother, Dimitri Greyson. He would not be a Blaxtone because that is his mother's maiden name. He would be a Greyson."

Talia turned a suspicious eye at Vander.

"But you're a vampire and Devin is a werewolf."

Vander shook his head with a mysterious smile.

"Talia, have you ever seen him turn into a werewolf?"

Talia nodded. "Yes, several times."

Vander waggled a finger. "No, no, no. What you saw was Devin shapeshifting into a wolf pup. He did not transform into a werewolf."

Talia thought back over the couple of times she had seen him shapeshift. The first time was when he had changed back into a boy inside her car, and the second time was when they were swimming in the pool.

She bit her lip. The man actually had a point.

"Come to think of it, I've only ever seen Devin turn into a little puppy." She turned to Devin with a thoughtful look.

Devin looked up at her with large amber eyes, and with a mischievous smile, he wiggled his buttocks and shapeshifted into a tiny blond puppy.

"Arooooo!!!" He threw back his head and howled in sheer pleasure, bouncing around in her arms.

"Oh you little show-off!" She grimaced and rubbed her nose into his furry face.

He lolled his head and panted in happy-happy joy-joy, his little tail wagging nonstop.

The vampire Vander Greyson moved in closer to Talia and Devin and was now regarding the boy with curious eyes.

"So this is how he does it." Vander's shapely lips was an O of surprise. "I understand now."

"What? What do you understand?" Talia shot another suspicious glance at him.

"Well," he gestured with his hand. "What many people don't know is that we vampires can also shapeshift into wolves—or bats, owls, and cats quite easily, as you saw when I carried you out of this place on bat wings."

"But how…"

"We have dominion over various creatures and can assume their forms at will. This is one of our powers."

Talia nodded, remembering the wings that had sprung from his back.

"I see. So why is it that he can only transform into a wolf?"

Vander shrugged. "He lives with you and his werewolf uncle. Monkey see monkey do. He doesn't realize he can change into a bat because he has never seen it being done before."

"So what you're saying is that he is in this form because he saw his uncle transform into a werewolf?"

Vander grinned. "You don't know much about Cedric Blaxtone do you? He is extremely powerful. Not only can he transform into a werewolf, he can also shapeshift into a full-sized wolf."

He turned back to look at the boy with amazement.

"This is why everyone was confused about Devin shapeshifting into a wolf. They thought he was using the shapeshifting ability of a werewolf, but that's not the case at all."

Vander grinned. "He was using the shapeshifting powers from his vampire side."

"How do you know whether it is werewolf or vampire powers that he is using?"

"By powers of deduction. For him to use his werewolf powers to change to a wolf, he would have to be able to change into a werewolf first, but at his age, he is still too young. He needs to reach puberty before he can transform into a werewolf."

Talia furrowed her brows. "And for a vampire?"

"We don't have to change into a vampire to be a wolf. We are already vampires."

"I see." Talia said even though she didn't quite see. "So he was born a vampire?"

"It is very rare, but in this case, there is no other explanation." Vander's eyes narrowed with contemplation.

"Devin is a very unusual child. His vampiric side emerged almost immediately, but I am willing to bet that by puberty, his werewolf side will surface and he will be one of the most powerful beings this side of the veil."

"How do you know that he is your nephew though?" Talia scratched Devin's puppy head.

"My brother sent a message back to Paradisio informing us that his Beloved had given birth. That was over two years ago."

"And you think Devin is his son?"

"Dimitri told us his Beloved's name is Viviene. And besides," he pointed at Talia. "I can smell the very faint signature of a vampire mark on you. It seems as if the wolf pup has marked you as his substitute mother."

Talia raised an eyebrow and looked at her now-healed arm.

"So he did bite you." Vander began laughing.

"Yes, but it was just a small bite, and he was just scared because of the thunderstorm…" she trailed off, seeing the look on Vander's face.

He was not even listening to her explanation. He was fixated on the part where she had admitted to being bitten.

"You have a very faint and distorted scent of a royal vampire on you because you've been marked by someone within my lineage."

He sniffed appreciatively at her direction. "Although it is faint, I can smell the royal vampire scent on you quite clearly."

"I see." Talia pursed her lips. "So that really does make you Devin's uncle."

Vander nodded. "I traveled here hoping to find some information of his whereabouts. The last time we heard from him was over a year ago. Since then, there has been nothing."

Talia sighed. The chance of Devin's mother being with his father was quite high.

She knew Cedric had been looking for his sister for over a year. He had even traveled to New Orleans to look for her but had not been able to locate her.

"Devin. Come on. Change back into a human so we can get some breakfast."

"ArooOOoooo!!!" He howled up at her.

"Don't you dare talk back to me!" She gave him a stern stare.

Devin's tail stopped wagging and his eyes drooped at being scolded by Mama Talia.

He shook his body a couple of times, and right before their eyes, his body weight began to drop and his bulky mass thinned dramatically as all the fur dissipated.

In less than a minute, he had transformed back into a wriggling little boy in her arms.

"Oh my word." Vander chuckled with appreciation. "I see it with my own eyes but I can hardly believe that such a young child is doing this so easily, as if by instinct."

Talia frowned. "If it's not by instinct, how else do you do it?"

Vander grinned. "Through rigorous training. Seeing him shapeshift so effortlessly is like seeing a child prodigy play the piano expertly at a very young age without any prior training at all."

"Hmm." Talia sniffed. "Well, this prodigy wolfling is going to go have some breakfast."

She turned to him with a strange look in her eyes. "Do you eat breakfast at all?"

Vander smiled. "I can eat but it does nothing to nourish me."

"So you need…blood."

Vander nodded.

"I do."

"Then why does Devin not need blood to survive?" She raised an eyebrow in challenge.

"Ahhh." Vander laughed. "That, he got from his mother's side of the genetic roll of dice. He can eat regular food, just like a werewolf."

Vander turned back to look at the boy with curious wonder.

"Does he have an unusual penchant for fresh meat?"

Talia nodded. "Oh yes. He loves raw steak. The bloodier the better."

"Bingo.." Vander laughed.
