“For you to win, you must always be correct. You must never falter. Never fail. Never slip. Never stumble. Me? I only need to be right once. This is why you lose.”
He stood up from his golden throne adorned with precious gems from all four corners of the world. An almighty throne that signified the one on the peak. The one with the most power. The one that held the world in the palm of their hands.
Slowly, he walked to me, each step matching the rhythm of my heartbeat.
Ba-dump. Ba-dump. Ba-dump.
Step. Step. Step.
His majesty could not be ignored. Magnificent dignity that was sharpened like a blade through countless years of standing on the peak, climbing up the mountain of flesh and blood to get to where he was today.
He stopped, a distance away from me so that even though I had to look up at him, he would never need to look down to see me.
I felt like an ant under his gaze. It was then that I realised how insignificant I was to him.

But I was unwilling. My brothers and sisters were still waiting in the underworld for me to achieve this dream of theirs — to kill the tyrant and finally put an end to his nightmarish reign.
I could not let them down just like that. I couldn’t give up because the moment I did, it meant that all we fought for was a useless war that amounted to nothing but a few lines in history books. I couldn’t admit defeat. Not now, not ever.
I struggled against the hands that bound me. The hands that belonged to soldiers who swore loyalty to the tyrant, betraying the citizens that they should have been swearing to protect. Although I loathed the tyrant, I loath these soldiers even more. Without them by his side, his tyranny would have never happened. Precious people would not have died, and I would’ve remained living in a world without any worries or hardships.
It was uncertain what he was seeing when he looked at me. After a period of silence, he finally broke it with an order, “Kill him.”
A flash appeared in my peripherals and my vision blurred. As my vision faded and darkness crept along the edges, I glared at the man in defiance.
“Gouge his eyes out. They irritate me.”
Even when I died, I couldn’t understand. Why was the world so unfair, pushing people like him into seats of authority? He wasn’t the first, nor would he be the last. Everything I did was to rebel against this fate of ours. Why was it so wrong in heaven’s eyes to stop short our success and bar us from the buds of our victories?
If only I could…If only I could go back in time…I wish….no, I will…I will realise this dream of ours. Instead of slaying the dragon king like in the fables, we shall slay and defeat the tyrant emperor.
