“Hello! My name is Akira Raven! I noticed the two of you weren’t interacting with anyone and figured I’d come say hi.” The little girl, Akira, said in a cheerful tone.

“Nice to meet you, Akira. My name is Olivia Zoller, and this is my little sister, Mika Zoller. Pleased to make your acquaintance.” Olivia politely greeted back.

“...Hello,” Mika replied but was apprehensive to say more than that.

“Ah! You can already talk?! Amazing! You must be some sort of genius or something. I wish I were a genius. I learned to talk over a year ago, but apparently, that’s the norm for kids my age. Oh! I’m four years old, by the way. How old are you? You don’t even look two years old? Can you teach me to be a genius? My Mom told me to befriend any geniuses I come across today. Would you like to be my friend? Want to come over to my house?....”

The girl, Akira, kept rambling on and on about nonsense, but neither Mika nor Olivia had the heart to tell the little girl off.

Mika could tell that the girl had a pure heart and was glad to see that at least some Noble Households don’t push their ideals onto their children at such a young age.

She hasn’t met many Nobles in this life, but from what she experienced in her past life, she knew that many Noble children end up being corrupted by their parents at a very young age.

Mika glanced around while listening in on some of the other children’s conversations and found the majority of Noble children to be similar to what she experienced in her past life.

Children who were born into a lower status are trying to suck up to those of a higher class. Older kids were trying to deceive the younger kids born of higher status—a large group of children trying to curry favor with the Third Prince.

It wasn’t everyone, as plenty of children just hung out with those they were already familiar with.

Still, amongst these Noble children here today, Mika hadn’t found a single kid with as pure of a heart as Akira.

This was incredibly refreshing, and Mika started to feel something weird for this little girl in front of her.

She wanted to protect this girl. She wanted to protect that pure heart of hers.

Mika didn’t know why she started feeling this way toward someone she had just met, but that didn’t matter.

She’s always been someone who followed her heart, and right now, her heart was saying she must protect this girl.

On the other hand, Olivia didn’t know what to think of Akira. She didn’t want to get mad at such an innocent little child, but the girl never shut up! At some point, she wasn’t even saying anything relevant and was just saying the first thing that popped into her mind!

That’s when she had a certain thought that made her start to reevaluate herself.

‘Is this how other people feel about me when I play with them? If that’s the case… God, I must be annoying! No, no, no, there’s no way I’m as annoying as Akira. At least I know when to… stop. Oh. NO! Am I really like that?! Is that why nobody likes me?’ Olivia suddenly felt her world turning upside down and wished she’d never met this annoying little girl.

“...You must really enjoy talking, huh, Akira,” Mika spoke up, interrupting Olivia and Akira’s inner and outer monologues.

“Yes! I love talking! My parents are always busy, so I can only talk with them at night, but by then, I’m too tired to talk and end up falling asleep before I can share my thoughts with them.” Akira was about to go on another rant again, but Olivia interrupted her before she could do so.

“What about your friends? I’m sure there are other people you can talk to.”

“Yes! Although, for some reason, my friends really like playing the ‘Quiet Game’, and since I’m bad at the game, I always lose first. Then my friends stopped playing and talking with me, saying that since I was the first to lose, this was my punishment.” Akira answered in her usual cheerful voice, but Mika could feel the sadness hidden underneath it all.

Although Mika’s heart ached for the little girl, she couldn’t necessarily blame her friends for treating her like that. In fact, she had some respect for those kids who gently turned Akira away instead of breaking the little girl's heart. As someone who preferred being left alone so she could practice her swordsmanship, Mika, in her childhood, probably would have beat up Akira if she were in their shoes.

Even now, Mika was annoyed by her constant blabbering, and if the girl didn’t have such a pure heart, she probably would have told her off already.

If Akira actually tried engaging with other people other than just speaking her mind, Mika wouldn’t be so annoyed, but it seems the girl’s mind works too fast to pay attention to the other party.

“...I see. Do you like doing anything else other than talking?” Mika asked, trying to take the lead in the conversation.

“Of course! I like watching cartoons! I like playing tag! I like it when my parents show me their magic! When I grow up, I want to be an amazing mage like my parents! Did you know they can make water appear out of thin air? But don’t try to drink that water; it tastes weird and doesn’t make you feel any less thirsty. It kind of tas-Blurgh!!” Akira was about to continue her rant, but suddenly a creature as black as night and the size of a large dog appeared behind Akira and had its appendage jammed through her stomach.

Everything was normal around the castle and in the city. The citizens were going about their normal lives like usual, and the party in the Castle was going smoothly.

Suddenly, the space around the city started distorting and breaking apart. Large chunks of the ground, buildings, cars, and even people started teleporting around randomly.

In gaming terms, it looked like Avalon City was glitching out, but unfortunately, this wasn’t a game. This was reality.

As one would expect, mass panic ensued shortly after this started happening as not only were the buildings ripping apart, but so were the citizens.

Some people found an arm or a leg missing, while others found half of their bodies gone and died on the spot. Others were crushed under the weight of entire buildings, and some people were directly teleported either into the sky or into the ground.

Those who appeared in the sky, if they weren’t strong enough or didn’t have the right affinity, could only despair as they fell to their death. The people who were teleported into the ground were smashed into meat paste without even leaving a corpse behind as their bodies were slowly absorbed into the earth.

Above the city, large cracks started forming in the sky until a massive rift opened up. At nearly the same time, everyone in the city looked up, only to find a rift of never-ending darkness.

It was impossible for anyone to tell what was on the other side of this rift, but everybody who looked at it had a bad premonition and felt their stomachs churn.

The citizens knew that today would be a day of reckoning for the people in the City of Avalon.

Due to the size of the rift and how dark it was on the other side, nobody noticed the creatures spilling out of the rift until it was already too late.

It only took a few tens of seconds for these creatures to reach the surface from the rift, and that’s when they started wreaking havoc on the city and its inhabitants.

They swarmed the City of Avalon like locusts and destroyed anything in their path. They held no regard for their own lives and only ran around like mindless beasts, but the humans on the ground were effectively powerless against them. Not because of their overwhelming strength. Sure, these creatures were fairly strong individually, but the humans were overwhelmed due to their agility, size, stature, and numbers.

The creatures were about the size of a medium-sized dog and looked like spiders with only 4 legs. Except these legs were nothing like legs and were more like razor-sharp blades. Their legs and body were stick thin; they had no face, only a mouth, and were as black as the rift above them.

Simply put, they looked terrifying.

These creatures were also incredibly fast and could seemingly teleport to dark places, making things harder for the humans.

To make matters worse, these creatures targeted any light source, so with their numbers, it didn’t take long for places that were once filled with light to be covered in darkness.

The humans on the ground tried forming groups to retaliate, but it was impossible to do so in such a short amount of time. Also, not everyone in the city was a fighter.

Most people that lived in Avalon at least had some cultivation, or at the bare minimum, they’d strengthened their bodies and were capable of defending themselves against minor threats, but not everyone was a battle-hardened veteran.

There were also a significant number of children living in this city because there is no better place to raise a child than Avalon in the entire country of Elysium.

At least, that’s how it was before today. Who knows what might change after this incident?

Barely a few minutes after these creatures started attacking the people on the ground, nearly 10% of the city and its inhabitants were wiped out, and it didn’t seem like it was stopping there.

At this point, even though the citizens were fighting for their lives, they couldn’t help but wonder when the Nobles and King would show up and kill all these creatures.

Everyone knew that today was the Third Prince’s Birthday Party and that tons of Nobles were attending the party, but even after almost 10 minutes since the rift opened and these creatures started attacking, there’s been no word from them.

Unfortunately for them, the King and the Nobles inside the castle were also dealing with their own problems. Not only were the adults trying to save their kids from these creatures, but they also had bigger problems to deal with.
