Ch14 - Tangerine

Inside the pharmacy, Yan Chengyun’s chest rapidly rose and fell as he huffed in anger. He gripped Gan’er’s collar, biting out through his teeth, “I understand now, you were sent here by Yan Xuan!”

He drew in close to Gan’er, continuing acidly, “These idiots have always been easy to manipulate, do you really think I would care? I’ll kill you on the spot!”

Gan’er’s back faced the others and there was not a trace of panic on her face. Contrarily, her eyes were brimming with innocence, and she said unhurriedly, “If you really didn’t care, why are you so angry–”

A dog barks loudest when it’s hurt.

This was something Yan Xuan once taught her, and applying it to Yan Chengyun could not be more fitting.

Yan Chengyun was close to going mad from anger. He grabbed Gan’er and said to the people surrounding them, “Everyone, listen to me. This is a half-demon, her blood can improve one’s cultivation, I must kill her to exact justice for the Heavens! Lowly demons such as her are not fit to live on this earth!”

His words were spat out near incoherently, so Gan’er put on a terrified expression and said, wronged, “Doctor Yan, why are you slandering me? I’m only an ordinary person, do you want to drink my blood like you drink the blood of demonic cultivators?”

Her words aroused the sympathy of the people around them. A few men picked up stones and flung them at Yan Chengyun, scolding, “Beast! If you dare to drink a demon cultivator’s blood today, you’ll be drinking human blood tomorrow! Everybody, let’s teach him a lesson!”

“You would even bully a beggar, are you still human!? Beat him up!”

The common people rushed up to beat Yan Chengyun. Yan Chengyun was thoroughly enraged, but when he looked back, Gan’er had already slipped away in the chaos. Angry and discomposed, Yan Chengyun grabbed a random child, raising his knife to kill him and subdue the crowd.

The child’s mother screamed loudly, piercing the skies of Ganlin City.

When the people reacted, a long saber pierced into Yan Chengyun’s dantian, shattering his core and saving the child.

Yan Xuan hugged the child, feeling a little confused. Why did Yi Ning tell him to save people at this time?

After a beat, the child’s mother rushed towards Yan Xuan and hugged her child, wailing.

She thanked him non-stop, blubbering, “Thank you for saving my child! Heavens bless you, thank you!”

This was the first time Yan Xuan had ever been thanked so whole-heartedly in his entire life. Furthermore, it was by an ordinary mortal.

He froze, then lifted his head to look at Yi Ning sitting on the roof. The other person was smiling faintly and mouthed to him, “Go get your revenge.”

Everything faded away.

Yan Xuan stared steadily at him, his heart like a heavy bell being rung by someone. The thumping of his heart clearly echoed in his ears and it was almost like he could hear Yi Ning saying these words to him.

So it’s like this. So, it’s like this.

He wanted to help him take revenge.

Yan Xuan gripped his saber tightly and pulled it out, saying to Yan Chengyun writhing on the ground, “Whatever you did to me, I will repay them unto you.”

During the harsh winter when I was 14, you picked up a piece of steamed bun from the ground and stuffed it in my mouth, forcing me to swallow it.

You smiled and said, aren’t you a snake? Why don’t you know how to swallow?

Now I do.

Yan Chengyun’s eyes were devoid of any hatred and were instead filled with bone-deep terror.

“Fu… Zhao…” Yan Chengyun vomited out large mouthfuls of blood. “Save me–”

When Yan Xuan heard this name, his actions suddenly froze, and in the next second, a wave of half-demon demonic fog like Yan Xuan’s enveloped Yan Chengyun. Yan Xuan furrowed his brow and stepped on Yan Chengyun’s hand, crushing his fingers, but ultimately he was unable to stop the demonic fog from bringing him away.

Fu Zhao. Yan Xuan looked into the distance, but he could no longer see anything.

At the same time, Yan Chengyun, who had been taken away, reopened his eyes in a large hall. In front of him was a face covered by a mask.

“You lied to me… You said that Yi Ning wouldn’t let him kill anyone…” Yan Chengyun raged at the man in front of him. “I understand now, you sent me to die.”

The blood flowing from his dantian had been stanched, but his core was shattered. Yan Chengyun had become a cripple.

The man asked in a mutter, “Is Yi Ning very close to him?”

However, Yan Chengyun had already fainted from the pain. The man sighed, then said lightly, “Why did you faint so easily?” If so, then he could only think of a plan by himself.

The man’s hand covered Yan Chengyun’s head and, in the blink of an eye, crushed his head into a cloud of mist.

In any case, Yan Xuan’s poison fog was wrapped around Yan Chengyun, he didn’t have long to live.

Yan Chengyun’s memories were slowly absorbed by the man, as well as the words exchanged between Yi Ning and Yan Xuan in the Demon Carriage that Yan Chengyun eavesdropped on.

Yi Ning and Yan Xuan didn’t seem to hate each other as much as he thought–weren’t they sworn enemies?

Furthermore, Immortal Master Yi Ning seemed to have become even more attractive compared to nine years ago. The man could stop himself from thinking about Yi Ning’s face, Yi Ning’s body, and Yi Ning’s voice.

“Find a human slave and send him to my bed.” The man was in a good mood, and even his voice had become several times more cheerful. “Just find one that looks like the usual.”

One that looks like Yi Ning.

Back at the Demon Carriage, Gan’er was still chattering about how deep and moving her performance was. Yan Xuan finally couldn’t endure it any longer and pinched her face in annoyance, forcing her to shut her mouth and stop talking.

After a while, seeing that Gan’er had stopped, Yan Xuan took out the ointment that Yi Ning gave him from his storage ring, pulling over Gan’er’s hand and carefully applying a little medicine on the cut on her finger.

Gan’er was so touched her eyes grew teary. As she thought, it was the right move to not leave with those people when they left the Demon Palace. She knew that the Venerable Lord treated her the best.

“The next time someone touches you, bite him.” Yan Xuan said indifferently, putting away the ointment bottle. He was unwilling to use the ointment Yi Ning gave him on other people.

Gan’er nodded and wanted to nuzzle into the Venerable Lord’s embrace, only for Yan Xuan to push her head away in disdain.

Gan’er: Sob.

At this time, Yi Ning walked into the Demon Carriage, a basket of fruit in his hand, and said, “When I left to send Xu Jinghe back home, a child asked me to give this to you.”

After a pause, Yi Ning’s lips twitched upwards, and he continued, “He wanted me to properly thank the big brother for saving his life.”

F*ck. Yan Xuan cursed under his breath, the tips of his ears faintly red.

Yi Ning was definitely doing this on purpose.

To the side, Gan’er happily scampered forward and bit into an apple with relish. Although she was young, she wasn’t picky at all.

Seeing how happily she was eating, the little discomfort Yan Xuan felt also faded away. He said lightly, “Next time, you don’t need to go through so much trouble. I don’t care about my reputation.”

Yi Ning nodded, but it wasn’t clear if he took it to heart, focused on picking out a tangerine from the basket.

Very quickly, Yi Ning peeled the tangerine, handing it to him. “Try one. This is a piece of his sincerity.”

Yan Xuan stared at the yellow, plump and round tangerine for a while, then reached out his hand and took it.

This is a tangerine that Yi Ning peeled for him. Yan Xuan tried a slice, the sour-sweet flesh splitting apart between his teeth. He looked at Yi Ning, the other person already staring at him, waiting for his verdict.

“Sour.” Yan Xuan said lightly, lifting his eyes to look at Yi Ning. He used to always feel that Yi Ning was a loft and unreachable person, which was why he always chased after his shadow. However, he felt that this Yi Ning was very good too.

Yan Xuan was lost in his thoughts and didn’t even notice Yi Ning taking away the rest of the tangerine from his hand.

“Then try another one.” Yi Ning stuffed a new tangerine into his hand and said, “This one isn’t sour.”

Yan Xuan watched as Yi Ning ate a slice from the tangerine he had been eating, the juice bursting out on his lips. Yi Ning stuck out his tongue and lightly swiped it over his lips.

They were both men, so Yi Ning didn’t think much about it. Furthermore, the other person was Yan Xuan.

However, an explosion seemed to resound in Yan Xuan’s brain, and all he could think about was Yi Ning’s appearance just now. His pale pink lips and tongue, as well as the tips of his pale fingers glowing in the light.

Was it on purpose? Yan Xuan’s gaze darkened, his throat bobbing as he subconsciously swallowed.

“What’s wrong?” Recently, Yan Xuan had been staring strangely at him like him. Even though the Yan Xuan from nine years ago also had this sort of gaze sometimes, Yi Ning had never taken note of it.

After all, nine years ago, to Yi Ning, Yan Xuan had been a 16, 17 year-old child.

Yan Xuan didn’t speak, but his gaze fell on the tangerine Yi Ning was eating. He lowered his body and took a slice of tangerine from his hand, his lips brushing across Yi Ning’s fingertips.

In the moment, it felt as if a spark of electricity traveled from his lips to Yi Ning’s fingers at the point where they touched. His heartbeat suddenly sped up and his eyelashes trembled. He wanted to push him away, yet his fingers refused to move.

Yan  Xuan lifted his head to look at Yi Ning, revealing a trace of a smile, “It seems like it became sweet.”

Yi Ning pulled back his fingers and he could clearly hear his heart thumping in his chest.

“Is that so?” Yi Ning retrieved his gaze, moving his hand away like nothing happened, turning his eyes onto Gan’er.

On Gan’er’s head full of black hair, her tiny braids trembled as she looked uncomprehendingly at them.

Were tangerines really that delicious?

Why did the Immortal Master and Venerable Lord eat the same tangerine?

She squeezed herself between them, pulling out a tangerine from the basket and splitting it open, popping a slice into her mouth. It was sweet and juicy.

“As I thought, it’s tasty.” It was just a little sour for some reason. As Gan’er munched away at the tangerine, the awkward air in the carriage warmed up a lot.

Not long after, the sky darkened, the sun descended below the horizon, and they finally reached the Glazed Tower.

It was just that this time around, the front doors of the tower were tightly shut and the guards at the entrance had grown in number.

It seemed like Fang Shilan had begun to guard against them, but Yan Xuan’s kick could destroy a copper door, let alone this wooden door embedded with glazed glass.

One strike from his saber shattered the formation laid on the door and they rushed to the top of the tower. Aside from the large bell at the top, not even the shadow of a person could be seen.

“They can’t have gone far.” It would be impossible for her to bring 17 pregnant women out of the city in such a short time period.

It was just that, in such a large city, how would they find them?
