He weaved through the wide, occasionally crooked spaces leaving behind street after street after street, until once again the buildings surrounding him had started to shrink ever so slightly in size, approaching yet another residential area. Running alongside him, several more sets of suspended train tracks had appeared, stretching far ahead and occasionally veering away or over him. Accompanying them, he saw also a few more suspended roads, built haphazardly around them as well, utterly cluttering the landscape.
They were considerably lower than the previous one, and their shape and direction told him they would only be getting lower.
And just a few kilometers left of him, on one of those same roads, the map showed him his opponent’s cursor, moving just slightly ahead of him.
Even though the path above was considerably slower than the lower streets, which had little to no obstacles, she was still gaining on the golf cart.
But not for long, he thought.
Without any patrols or obstacles to stop him, since this area of the map had seemingly not even been properly thought out, he could take advantage of the extra space and break as many rules as he wanted!!
It wasn’t even like he had to follow any of those streets or drawn paths or anything. He could cut through sidewalks, every random, rotting garden he could find, and soon enough, if the map was right…
He turned the wheel again, veering the car ever so slightly into a river embankment which had just then appeared on his left. Or rather, what he could assume to have been one. It was empty, completely dried up. And pleasantly enough, it led him straight where he wanted to go.
After a few more inches of pushing the wheel, he was finally able to skid the cart over the edge and into the dead, stone-covered riverbed itself.
The vehicle shook manically, back and forth, not seeming to gel well with the terrain, but who cared!? He was cutting that track to pieces!
However, the cart was also starting to slow down. The smaller Pocket Boosters were starting to lose their effect.
“No matter!!!”
He still had seven more to dispose of. Three more should do the trick.
“I– I– Item equipped.”
The matchstick girl was almost at ground zero now, as the elevated path would reach its end just ahead. He could already see it in the distance, descending into a rotation and splitting right onto a straight road ahead, which would lead him to the goal.
Past that, there was only another set of large buildings next to a bunch of more unorganized train tracks. Or rather, the tracks passed right through them?
(An abandoned train station, maybe?)
The road would then develop into a mess of turns and counterturns circling the buildings, which would certainly be hard to pull off with his new vehicle. That was likely where she would be able to lose him, assuming he didn’t crash headfirst into something due to the boosters’ excessive speed.
“Wait. What do you mean, excessive speed? I SAY IT’S NOT ENOUGH!!!!”
He proceeded to add two more boosters, because why the hell not!?
It didn't matter to him. If he couldn’t properly make the turns as he was now, then he could just as well find a way to crash directly through the buildings. They were all old and rotting anyway!!
Not lifting his foot from the pedal as he approached the road connecting to the elevated road all the way from down there, the ever calculating, levelheaded Haruto was barely able to force his golf cart off from the dry riverbank and back onto the concrete of the dam’s diagonal surface, making use of all his speed to climb to the top of its left side, just barely scraping his way onto the promised road with a loud, furious bump.
For a while now, the cart had been shaking uncontrollably, and from below it, quick, frantic drumming could be felt, though the boy wouldn’t have noticed any of that in his frantic, manic stupor. Each piece of the mighty golf cart would creak, grind, shriek and beg for mercy as it shook and juttered in place. But to no avail.
“Onwards!!”
Now, with all other buildings and bridges out of the way, he could once again see the path straight ahead as he proceeded, barely able to balance the vehicle as it wobbled from one side to the other.
Just as he’d guessed, it was another enormous, decaying building. More precisely, it was a seamless cluster of closely connected buildings spanning several yards and lowering itself along a large incline, or rather, it looked as though it was placed atop a severely sloped hill, with the lowering train tracks connecting right onto it from its left side. There wasn’t a single window or other such glass surface left, the revolving doors at its entrance seemed to have been frozen in time, and several of the old concrete walls seemed to have been cracked, or perhaps even bent from several angles.

It was approaching fast, and soon enough he would have to make his decision. The road ahead twisted into a curve and went right around that miserable station, but the turns from there would be impossible for the golf cart, if it was to maintain optimal speed.
It would still be less of a risk to cut right through the edifice, even if he had to deal with all the broken glass and potential obstacles, because at the end of the day, a straight path would still be saving him time!
Adding to that, he had to hurry before Hellfire made her way to him. If he wanted to reach the goal before her, then he had no time to lose.
“You!!”
“Speak of the devil…” he grinned. “How’s it going? Did ya have fun with the patrol cars up there!?”
Far behind, emerging from the city’s main elevated freeway, came running a scarlet, orange motorcycle, with its familiar owner riding irately atop it, bright, burning flame in hand.
“You… Everywhere… Every time… What do I have to do to get rid of you!? And…! And…! What even is that!?”
Her throw was messy, although he was barely able to even veer to the right, the fireball did not land even close to the place where he’d previously been, sending her further into a rage while he cackled to his heart’s content.
It seemed that little trip she’d had up there had been even more unpleasant than he’d expected. He assumed having all the attention of the town’s security focused on one racer instead of two must’ve been tough to deal with, seeing her gasping for air and babbling incoherently as she was now.
Battered, beaten, tired, and now drowning in despairing disbelief, the girl could no longer even process what was currently meeting her eyes.
“How are you still alive!?!?” she cried, hopeless. “This race should have ended ages ago!!!!”
She flung another flame in his direction, but it misfired once again, colliding with the railless roadside instead, her weak, fatigued arm sagging back onto the motorcycle’s handle.
“I AM IMMORTAL!!!!!!” he shouted as he pointed to the back of his quivering ride. “Do you like it!? The beauty and sleekness of the golf cart, combined with the power of the Pocket-Booster, makes for an unstoppable bullet on the road!! And only I could ever figure it out, BECAUSE I AM A GENIUS!!!!!!”
“You are deranged!! Those kinds of items are only viable one at a time with flimsy pieces of scrap like that! Any more and your vehicle won’t even keep itself together, you imbecile!!!!”
“Seems to be working just fine to me!!!” he replied heartily to the tune of the golf cart’s incessant squeaking and belching.
Lifting her other arm, tired likewise, she tried for yet another attack, but before she could swing it properly, the flame she’d formed around her palm suddenly vanished, prompting her to gag in shock as Haruto watched from ahead, taking the chance to add yet another booster to his existing collection on the back of the cart.
“Your skill ran out again. How long will it take to charge, I wonder? Well, it doesn’t matter!! See you nowhere!”
He turned back to the road ahead, confirming the entrance of the station was coming in just a few more meters.
“You’re not the only one who still has items, you damn grasshopper!”
The motorcycle suddenly gained a burst of speed, fully closing the distance between the two vehicles until they were almost running side by side.
Turning to glance at her, the boy wheezed.
“Same difference, matchsticks!! You can’t rival this baby. Golf carts are great! They are the greatest vehicle ever imagined by man!!!!”
“We’ll see.”
Tearing down the building’s now barely solid, glassless revolving doors, the raging golf cart sped right in, followed closely by the scarlet motorcycle. Though he could not, in his life, ever take notice of it, the vehicle was starting to fall apart. Literally.
