“Well, that’s surprising.” he said, looking up to the building’s roof.

Kataki’s main inn facility was located near the town’s central plaza, and defying Haruto’s expectations of a small, rough-looking guest house similar to the rest of the area, the ‘inn’ was actually a somewhat intimidating 5-story premise, rivaling even Kataki’s tallest buildings, if that would be saying anything. It hadn’t been erected in stone, either, noticeably contrasting with the environment it was surrounded by. Just on the building’s frontside he could see a nearly innumerable amount of windows, about three for each floor, yet it still felt overwhelmingly empty, looking at it from that angle, since there wasn’t even a single hint of light coming from any of them. The inn was entirely in whitewashed concrete, in such a way that it stood out the most among that street’s buildings.

(Huh. People here go to bed really early, indeed. It’s honestly kinda weird…)

Not that it bothered the boy, aside from a slight pang of jealousy. How carefree of them. But it wasn’t all that weird, anyway, compared to other things he’d already seen in that place. By that point, so long as he was able to lie down and have a rest, he would be willing to accept a hammock tied to trees if he had to.

The interior of the inn didn’t differ much from the outside.

All white, and somewhat empty-looking, too. It was pretty well-lit though, although he couldn’t see any sort of lamp or other light source anywhere in there. It almost looked as if the walls were directly illuminating themselves, which was freaky to think about. In the entrance room he would have expected there to be a reception in, there were only a few chairs placed in and there, and a large, black round table placed right at the center of the flooring, being the only thing in the whole division that wasn’t white. And not a person in sight.

“Place looks deserted.” he said, scratching his head a little.

“Well, not many people around town come to the inn, since most of them have been here a long time and already own a house in Kataki. Not many travelers pass by, either, since it’s not much of a hot spot for quests”

“And? Where do we go now?”

“The inn is entirely automatic.” replied the girl. “We use the console in the middle of the entrance hall to choose rooms and how many hours to spend in them.”

“... Console? What console?”

He took a few steps forward, stopping just short of the table in the middle. He looked around, trying to see if there had been some sort of control panel around there all along blending into the room’s white walls which he hadn’t seen, but there was nothing of that sort. Instead, he was then greeted by one of the familiar floating windows.

It had a number of options on it, listed ‘Floor’, ‘Room number’, ‘Amount of rooms’, and ‘Number of people per room’, ‘Requested number of hours’, and so on and so forth. Below all that, there was a sort of tally indicating how much the total cost would be, which was currently sitting at 0 credits, as he hadn’t chosen anything.

“I see… In that case…”

He started messing around with the boxes and sliders, at first blindly, then with intention.

It was simple enough. Two people, one night, so about eight hours, and two one-person rooms.

(No, maybe nine. I’m too damn tired.)

Nine hours it was. He didn’t really care what room they each ended up in, since they looked all the same from the images, so he just selected two at random on the second floor which happened to be vacant.

The pricing below then changed to ‘1,500’.

(Cheap enough… But then again, we had to pawn off a rare motorcycle just to get me a car, and I don’t know how far 74,900 credits can get us in the long term…)

And as Suzuka had said, it wasn’t like they needed the inn to survive, either. It was there to kill time, not to mention help people keep their peace of mind. It would, admittedly, be weird to suddenly drop the habit of sleeping daily after a whole life of doing it. No matter how short and insignificant such a life might have been…

As much as he could help it, it would be best to try and save as much as he could when it came to these kinds of things.

Messing around with the options some more, he looked for things he could change. He couldn’t alter the number of hours, as he felt that less than nine simply wouldn’t be enough for him, not to mention the car still wouldn’t be anywhere near ready even if they decided to leave early. It didn’t make a difference choosing another set of single rooms for them, since they were the exact same in design.

Maybe he could just fit the two of them inside one room? That way, he would only have to pay for one. He changed the option of two single rooms to only one, and the price immediately decreased to 750. He did, however, take notice that such a room would literally only allow one person to enter at a time, completely defeating the purpose of his ‘maneuver’ of sorts.

Just out of curiosity, he picked a double room instead, altering the price box to ‘1,000’. While it was more expensive, it was still better than the previous ‘1,500’, and it would fit the two of them just fine. He didn’t know how much 500 credits would actually matter in the grand scheme of things, but he would personally rather hold onto them if given the option, no matter how much of a penny-pincher he might’ve come off as.

He carefully checked all the options again to make sure everything was in order, then quickly went to press ‘Accept’.

It was the afterlife. Who gave a shit about class or tact, anyway?

Suzuka certainly did, apparently. Right before he could tap the button, she’d grabbed hold of his wrist, stopping his arm still in the air.

“W-What are you doing!?”

“Renting a room so I can go take a nap.” he stated, matter-of-factly.

Was she retarded? She’d been with him this whole time and directly brought them here herself. She already knew what he was going to do.

“I-I-I’m not sleeping in the same room as you!!!”

He backed off slightly, startled by her yelling. It seemed that choice on his part had bothered her enough that she’d even forgotten to address him as ‘master’ like she usually did.

“... Sheesh. Quiet down. It’s not like it’s the end of the world. We’re just sharing a room.”

“But…! But I’m a girl! You can’t just go and try to start getting close to people like that!! It’s totally gross!!! I’m not gonna be stuck inside a tiny room with you, no fucking way!!!!” she babbled.

He supposed that was where she drew her line. She wanted an individual room for herself. She wanted her own particular sleeping space. But that would cost him money. Even if it turned out to not be much, it would still cost him.

And why should he comply? He hadn’t come to the Cyberway for being a nice person. Neither had she. Why should he turn a complete one-eighty now and start acting like some paragon of virtue to people who had tried to kill him?

Haruto had exhausted every ounce of strength he’d had that day. He didn’t want to argue or complain anymore. All his life, he’d wasted precious time groveling and apologizing and waiting around for people who’d then just treat him like crap in return. He was tired of having to justify himself to whoever.

Still, he gathered his thoughts. He had to stay cool. He couldn’t just let some servant make him lose his mind.

(Please, just let me save my damn money… Just let me fucking sleep…)

“It’s not even that expensive to get a separate room! I can show you some decent quests later!!” she argued, regardless.

“Maybe you can, maybe you can’t. So far, you haven’t shown me any. And so far, all the money and items I can count on are the ones I have here, right now, and I’m not going after any more of them in the middle of the night.” he said, shoving her arm away and going for the ‘Accept’ button again. “Plus, it’s not like I can just let my eyes off of you. I’ll trust you only as far as I see fit, and you don’t have any say in that. Now, come on. You look tired too. It’s getting late.”

“N-No way! I’m not sharing a bed with you! I’m… I’m not doing anything with you, ever!!! I… I… Women need some privacy, too, don’t you know that!? Is that too much to ask? I just want some personal space!!”

He stopped again, just before his finger could reach the surface. Somehow, in some way, her words had gotten to him. It hadn’t been any part of what she’d said in specific. Just the sheer sensation of hearing her say all of that, sentence after sentence, all piling up until they’d overwhelmed him utterly. Before he’d even realized, the boy had furiously snapped at her.

Well, I want my life back!!!

“...”

The two of them stood still for a moment, neither sure what to do.
