Far off in the distance behind them, they’d eventually been able to hear the engines of several more vehicles approaching, all coming furiously for them just as Suzuka had anticipated.

Or at least, so they guessed, judging from their silhouettes alone. Outside that town, there really wasn’t much of anything to point out, no signs or lamp masts, no lines in the pavement, no vegetation, no nothing. It was a barren wasteland as far as the eye could see. For that reason, there was no proper, clear-cut way to measure distances on the spot, to simply tell how far one was from one vehicle or another, for instance.

“Two, three, four… I think that’s all of them.” he said.

“Are you sure, Master? There aren’t any others?”

“No. There must have been only two or three more similar to that group inside the city, so that’s all the personnel they have going after us, just like you said. Think you can blow them out of the road once they come around?”

Thus, Suzuka had kept her eyes on the road ahead, wary of any unplanned obstacles. Matching her expectations, however, the path was all but clear in the far distance. Not many people drove around these parts, to begin with, and once word had gotten around that his employees had decided to come pay a visit to Kataki, that must’ve been enough to keep what little traffic there far away from the roads.

Feeling confident she could take a glance behind without any complications, she’d confirmed what her master had seen just a moment before. Four pitch-black cars with heavily tinted windows, all coming in fast. The nearest three looked pretty conventional, it didn’t appear like they could give them much trouble. The fourth one all the way on the back, though, looked far bulkier than the others. Wider, too. It was heavily armored, most likely, and would not be as easy to take down as the others, were she to try anything conventional…

“... With a bit of luck, I could maybe try to take on most of them, but… That tank-thing on the back will be tricky. Just a few flames probably won’t be enough to blow it up.” she muttered, once again turning back to examine the path ahead.

“I see… Then, there’s also the liquid spear. How many do you think they have on them? If a bunch of them just firing on us at the same time, then we’d –”

“It’s very unlikely they would have any more than just that one. It’s a very rare item, since the materials to make it are staggeringly scarce as well, and there aren’t any events in the Cyberway where it could just be naturally rewarded. These agents may be strong, but they aren’t nearly as bad as some others I’ve met on the mafia’s elite roster. Most of their assigned abilities suck really bad, too. Just the two of us were able to take them back there without much of a fuss. Normally, only the most high-ranking officers in his roster of goons would ever get to carry such a thing around… I figure he must’ve opened an exception just this one time to take me down. ”

“Interesting.” nodded Haruto. “Seems you have a growing fan club here, too!”

“T-This isn’t funny, master! We could really be in serious trouble, here! Most of these men are either on par or above my own level, forget about master’s!”

“Maybe so… Honestly, though, I’m not much of a stranger to trouble at this point. So, give it all you got, and I might just praise you a little!”

The first two of the vehicles were already plain in Haruto’s sight, moving in quickly each to the right and leftmost ends of the lane as the third one remained in the middle, slower. Those two were likely trying to place themselves on each of the motorcycle’s sides, leaving it no room to escape.

“I think that’s your cue.” ordered the boy, freakishly amused with the whole thing.

“Understood.”

She complied, however, without a single more question. He could tell she enjoyed that kind of thing, as well.

 “Assigned skill activated: Fireblast

She freed a hand from one of the handles, waving her arm around as she tried to aim for the car on the right. She clumsily threw the first fireball straight into its middle, but already anticipating the attack, the car receded immediately, effectively dodging the fire and even the rubble it shot up.

Tried for another, but the enemy vehicles dodged it all the same. She gave it yet another attempt, but it wasn’t granting her any results.

“No one denies the Godfather!!!!” he heard from somewhere nearby, accompanied by a couple more unintelligible voices, which he guessed to be just more threats, but in Italian.

Glancing to their left, Haruto noticed the other car had just rolled down its window, and three of the men inside were pointing their guns at them. Behind them, riding outside the third car’s windows, he could see two more shooters. No liquid spear, in sight, but the sight of the guns alone was already bad enough for him.

(No, no… This isn’t working!)

“They’re trying to shoot us off the road. You gotta move, matchsticks!!”

She retreated back and slightly sideways, nearly avoiding the whole first barrage of bullets, which mostly collided with the car on the right instead. Unfortunately, a few strays had still successfully caught them off-guard, hitting the motorcycle’s front wheel and tire instead, missing Haruto’s legs by just a few inches.

“What is it with you people always trying to shoot me with random crap!?”

The impact of the bullets had made Suzuka lose control over the bike’s balance, making them veer wildly from one side to the other.

No sooner had he voiced his whiny complaint, he immediately heard the sound of more bullets piercing the air above them, as his agitated servant tried her luck at swerving them around what little space they had left to try and avoid them.

That’s it.

Letting go of her waist, the boy turned to sit backwards on the motorcycle, just barely keeping himself straight on top of the vehicle’s farther rear.

“M-Master!? What are you doing?”

“Drive the bike.”

He stared down at the third vehicle still moving nonchalantly behind them and, slowly taking a hand off of the unreliable seat he’d moved to, he swiped at the skill icon.

Assigned skill activated: On-site crafting.

Just a quick peek at the scenery behind her was enough to make the girl’s eyes widen. It was hard for her to understand it. To the boy it’d been a natural, even risible occurrence. To her, it looked as though a dozen different things had just happened at the same time, without any reason or rhyme.

One moment, Haruto was sitting with his back turned to her, staring down the road behind them, the next, he’d suddenly moved back onto his usual place, arms wrapped around her again. It wasn’t that he’d moved astoundingly fast. He’d just snapped from one position to the other, without her even noticing it.

And just like that, the tire, the wheel and the one broken light on the motorcycle were replaced, the holes on its front end were closed, and a small, star shaped piece of metal had been attached to the top its nose, a small blue light flickering at its middle, which in turn had prompted a blue, translucent, sphere-like wall to envelop them, flickering just as much as the light itself.

“The shielding ba–  But how–”

Before she could articulate anything more, there was a loud crunch behind them, blunt at first, then increasingly screechy as the seconds went on.

There had been a pile of jumbled, sharp-looking rubble lying huddled up on the road right behind the two of them, just sticking out of the asphalt like a tree sapling. It wasn’t there before, of course. It looked like it had suddenly gained form in that exact place. It had instantly materialized, just like that.

Tailpipes, car wheels, motorcycle wheels, assorted metal plating, pieces that seemed like they’d been directly ripped off of a suspension, all stabbing and overlapping over each other, some of the parts almost looking like they’d been intentionally honed at the edges with some sort of tool. The pile as a whole hadn’t been all that tall, but rather wide enough to occupy the whole extension of the road’s middle area.

Not having time to dodge the sudden obstacle, the third car drove right into it, moving all the way forward and bumping several times over it as the sharp, blade-like hindrance continuously cut, stabbed and tore through its underside, making it quickly lose control over its direction and swerve violently to hell and back, until eventually it toppled over itself and started to roll out of the road.

Promptly reacting to the third car’s plight, the tank, which just a moment ago had been moving only a few feet behind it, was just barely able to move out of the way of that pile of scrap, narrowly avoiding ending up wrapped up in its early companion’s messy overturning as well.

“Haha! I may not be able to touch player vehicles directly, but that doesn’t mean I can’t mess with the road.” mocked a suddenly smug Haruto, much to the redheaded girl’s confusion.

“W-What did you just…? How did you…!?”

“I fixed your bike! It’s how my ability works. I’ll explain later.”

He still didn’t feel completely satisfied with that result, though, even though it had turned out surprisingly well.

With just a bit more time he could have done more, but the crafting setting didn’t grant him all that much to begin with. He couldn’t actually touch other people’s vehicles himself while time was frozen, either…

(Well, it is what it is.)

There was no time to rest just yet, though. The tank was moving onto them now that the other car had been taken out, and the two others in the front were still pointing guns at them. Just when’d thought things could not get any worse, a deafening disarray of skill activation command were sounding all around them, and looking behind them, just out of the tank-car’s passenger window, he could see one of the very same sunglasses guys they’d fought off just at the entrance of the town. He was pointing a black gauntlet with a golden arrow straight at him.
