“So, this was all we really managed, huh…?” muttered Haruto, letting his shoulders droop down as he took a hard look at what all that hard spending had gotten him, in the end.

His total saved credits, originally ‘233,900’, had been firstly reduced to a slightly less attractive ‘208,300’, after the extensive repairs he’d needed to order on it to fix broken doors (and replace the ones that weren’t there anymore), fix or replace broken windows, close up all fuel and oil leakage points (since, as it seemed, even if the driving itself did not deplete the tanks, they still needed to be full for the car to work properly), replace a bunch of random, broken stuff under the hood that only God (and Akane and Suzuka, because they were freaks like that, apparently) knew the proper name for, and finally, change both tires and wheels because the ones he’d been using up until the end of the race against that crazy guy with the cheap perm had wound up full of holes, tears and very thick shards of glass.

The place Suzuka had taken them, too, was weird to boot. Instead of just going to one of he normal-looking car shops in the middle of the plaza like everyone else, the loony redhead had instead led him and the blue-haired, middle-school girl towards a dingy-looking neighborhood in Pagat City’s southwestern corner, and into what looked more like a giant, rustic-looking cafe with a  suspiciously tiny wooden theater stage right in the middle of the premise, where he was ordered to just drop his battered, barely held together Midnight Gale, ‘pay the price, and watch the magic happen’ or something. It seemed to be a family-owned store, and even though the design looked amateurish even for a dopey amateur like himself, he’d had no complaints about the store’s system itself. Quick and efficiently, his 280-hp standard-sized car had been restored to its former ‘glory’ of sorts.

The lady managing the place hadn’t been that bad, either, all in all. Upon arriving, it’d been immediately clear to him that the big family that allegedly ran the whole establishment had been out that day to goof around the city, leaving only the elderly, somewhat nutty granny to take care of the place. He doubted they’d actually been expecting clients at that hour, and judging by her face, the granny had echoed his guess. Since she and Suzuka seemed well-acquainted, though, the deal didn’t take that long to fix up.

Her not being nearly as much of a helpless degenerate as Jaya had also helped a lot when it came to streamlining the vendor-client relationship, at least where it counted.

The only real complication throughout the whole repair-job had been right at the end, as the three of them attempted to leave the shop. For some odd reason, the old lady had spent the whole time talking down to them like their were their grandkids or something, and not actually paying clients, and hadn’t properly allowed them to leave until Suzuka accepted a whole bag of homemade candies for them, which she then forced him to just store in his inventory with a bloodshot face that trembled back and forth, barely able to articulate her owns words, and irritatingly tried to block his ears shut with both hands as they walked away, the woman waving them at the door and shouting a bunch of babyish nicknames at her while saying goodbye about a thousand times as they turned the corner while Akane snorted and wheezed back-and-forth beside them.

After finishing up the whole ordeal, he’d sighed merrily in relief, believing it was finally over and they could get back to their main goal. But then, he’d remembered they still needed to armor up his car, and thus had headed to the aptly named armory shop Suzuka, the former highschool rich-girl who shouldn’t have had any connections to criminal activity whatsoever in life, had also conveniently known around that area, where his credit count was further reduced to ‘168,400’, even though he hadn’t been able to properly cover up his vehicle in its entirety.

Upon entering, he’d first had to deal with Akane’s mindless yapping. The place apparently sold all the way from simple armor plating to outright tank conversions, steel-plated wheel protections, window-snaps, and to top it all off… Guns.

Guns, guns, guns!!! Machine guns for the side-doors, surprise-grenade-tossers for the trunk, shotguns that would spring out directly from aforementioned snap-blinds to shoot your face point-blank, rocket-launchers directly equipped to the roof, flamethrowers for the hood, high speed sliding nuclear mines from right under the body-work…

The descriptions from the display shelves alone had been almost enough to make him faint. The pricing itself would have most certainly done him in, hadn’t it been for Suzuka shaking him back awake again. He guessed she was probably used to the sights, already.

Akane, on the other hand, was just running around, gushing, rolling along the shelves, groping each and every murder device to hell and back…  Damn his conscience, the sheer bloodlust on display had caused her to all but jizz herself on sight right on arrival. He didn’t get it.

It was a dusty, inconceivable rust-filled concrete building… Filled with deadly accessory after deadly accessory… Suzuka really knew how to choose them…

The guy running the shop looked to be in his thirties or forties, long, well-maintained bear, a complete, utterly obsessed gear-head, if all the parts and pieces at the back of the establishment were any indication. Wore a bunch of oil-soiled shirt, pants and work boots, covered with an even more oil-covered apron-thing over it, and an unremovable, smoking cigar in his swollen-looking mouth, and also spent the whole time talking down to them and patting their heads like little kids (except for Haruto himself, who only qualified for the occasional, stern disapproving glance, apparently) with his unbearably greasy hands while he walked them through the whole upgrading process, even though Suzuka was no doubt already acquainted with it.

In the end, Haruto was able to wager some extra steel-plating for the underside of the car, along with some minor improvements to bodywork resistance along the rear and the backside laterals, including the doors, though he thought it best not to upgrade the windows with snap-blinds just yet, as the lasting money might not have sufficed for what was coming next.

He tried to ask the shopkeeper if there was any way he could help them with fixing a liquid spear, but he simply shrugged it off, saying it wasn’t really his specialty and he couldn’t really offer them any proper service regarding that.

So, in the end, they’d just run off with that, dragging Akane away along the first few steps while she cried and that she wanted a shotgun, ‘She didn’t even mind if it was one of the small ones!’, even though they wouldn’t have anything to attach it to on the Midnight Gale, anyway, seeing as he hadn’t done all the necessary upgrades for that, as the middle-aged guy went on and on about how he had his eye on the boy and he’d better not do anything weird to his dear Suzu.

“The hell did I do to you, old m–!?” Haruto just managed to spit out, before the two girls were able to cover up his mouth and redirect him towards the next, and last shop on the list.

Once that one had been taken care of, the next trip for the trio would officially begin.
