When the sky turned dark, I finished my part-time job at Aki’s house working as a tutor.
“We shall leave it at that.”
“Yes, Senpai. Thank you for today.”
Aki, while sitting on a chair, thanked me with a genuine smile. Aki is not only smart and good at remembering things, but also a sincere and kind person. She is an ideal student for someone to teach.
“With a score like this, there is a ninety-percent chance you will get into our school.”
It seems that the school Aki wants to get into is the one I attend. As someone who’s already gone through the entrance examination, I’ve been asked to tutor Aki since I would be the best one for the job.
“You aren’t absolutely certain?”
“Of course not. Nothing in this world that is ‘absolute’.”
Considering Aki’s academic ability, barring any unforeseen circumstances on the day of the exam, she will definitely make it into our school. The school I attend is a rather average one in the prefecture. For someone like Aki, who could easily make it into one of Okayama’s Five Schools, designated as the five best schools within the prefecture, there is no way our school would not accept her. However, if you look down on it, there’s the possibility of slipping up and failing. I wouldn’t be able to take responsibility if I guaranteed her acceptance and she failed. After all, I’m not the one who would feel the pain, that would be Aki. I shouldn’t say anything that might let her get arrogant. Still, there are things that I would like to say for Aki’s sake.
“Are you really okay with this? With Aki’s academic ability, I think Asahigaoka High School would be a better option.”
I recommended Aki to try for the high school with the best grades in the prefecture. If you are seriously considering your future, you should go to the best high school you can.
If it’s Aki, she’ll be able to get into Asahigaoka High School quite easily, and I don’t think it makes sense for her to opt for an average school like ours.
“It’s okay. I want to attend Setoyama High School like Senpai.”
Aki puffed her cheeks and told me what she thought about my suggestion. Not only her appearance, but her behaviour is also childish. Well, that is one of her many cute aspects though.
“I am not saying that my school is bad, I just think that it’d be a waste.”
“Muu~ Isn’t it fine? It’s my choice what school to attend. Besides, it’s whatever if it was someone else that said it, but I don’t want to be told that by you, Senpai.”
“It’s hard to argue with that… I really didn’t want to go to the same school as her.”
As for why I’m not really one to be able to argue with Aki like this. It’s because I, myself, had gone as far as to reject my homeroom teacher’s advice at the time and not aim for Asahigaoka High School.
However, I didn’t try for Asahigaoka High School just because I wanted to oppose my teachers. I only did it because after getting into Asahigaoka High School, it was very likely that I would be in the same school as the person I hate the most in this world.
She will probably be attending Asahigaoka High School next year because she is really strong in her studies. I wanted to stay away from her so much, that I chose another high school.
“The same goes for me. That person always acts cold to just me for some reason… I didn’t even do anything…”
It is unusual for Aki to be talking about others. It could be that something else happened after I graduated.
“Maybe it’s because you hang out with me often… I’m sorry for dragging you into a sibling fight like this.”
“It’s fine. Senpai isn’t one to be blamed at all. It’s not like she’s hurting me. It’s just that she sometimes glares at me, and sometimes exchanges a couple of words.”
Aki chuckled with a bitter smile. If what she said is true, I’d like to complain a bit, but I can see that she is enduring it.
“If something terrible happens, do tell me. I will help you out.”
“It’s okay, I got it. After all, Senpai, you don’t want to associate with her anymore, right? I’m alright, so don’t overdo it for me. Senpai, let’s eat dinner. I am gonna use my skills and whip up a good meal for you.”
Aki stood up from the chair, forcibly ending the conversation. She must’ve done it because the conversation was heading in a dark direction. Aki is so kind that she hates talking about dark and depressing stuff.
“Oh yeah. I’m looking forward to it.”
“Yeah!”
I followed up with Aki’s intentions. It is no use talking about such uninteresting stuff. Besides, I’ve stopped getting involved with her at all. It’d be a waste of time to even remember.
“—Ah!”
“What is it?”
Aki, who was leaving the room for the kitchen, suddenly froze where she stood. I was confused, but she looked at me with a troubled expression. Then, she bowed her head.
“Sorry, Senpai! I stayed at school until the last minute and returned in a hurry, so I couldn’t buy groceries! I’ll go buy the ingredients right now!”
“Is that it? Well, then let’s just go and buy it together.”
I thought it was something serious because she had a troubled look, but it seems that she just couldn’t buy the ingredients for dinner. She doesn’t have to worry about it at all.
“Is that okay?”
“It’s dark outside, so I can’t let Aki go alone, can I? Miyu-sensei hasn’t come back yet after all.”
It seems that Miyu-sensei has business, and she contacted Aki to tell her that she’ll be late. I don’t know when she’ll be back, so I think it’s better to go shopping with Aki rather than ask Miyu-sensei to buy it on her way home.
“T-thank you very much… Ehehe, a shopping date with Senpai.”
Listening to my words, for some reason, Aki replied while blushing. I couldn’t hear the latter half of the sentence since she was muttering, but I was worried that she had a fever.
