Chapter 1: Prologue

Biip… biip… biip…

Inside one of the ICU rooms at the hospital, a young girl lies in the bed with her body covered by a thin blanket. A lot of machines were beeping, monitoring and supporting her body. With her brain deteriorating, her body couldn’t function anymore.

Outside her room, a few doctors wearing white coats were talking with a middle aged woman.

“Doctor, is there nothing we could do to save my niece anymore?” That middle aged woman asked with a choked voice. Her tears rolled down her haggard face continuously.

Those doctors looked at that middle aged woman with self blame and helplessness before they shook their heads. “We are really sorry, Mrs. Jiang. We did whatever we could to save Miss Liu, but her condition is not improving at all. Her condition was unknown and there is no way to cure Miss Liu with our current technology.” One of the doctors said with a low voice.

Mrs. Jiang bit her pale lips and said with a quivered voice, “Qing Qing must be in a lot of pain. I should have let her go, right?”

The doctors look at each other before nodding their heads. Mrs. Jiang burst into an uncontrollable cry when she saw the doctor’s answer. She knew that she should let her niece go, but she is her sister’s only daughter. The one that she raised from a baby until now. How could she be willing to let her young niece go just like that?

Aunt? Why is my aunt crying so sadly? 

Laying on the hospital bed, Liu QingHe could hear any sounds around her. Even though she was in a coma, her mind was always awake. She knew what was happening to her. 

Don’t know how long it has been since that night she lost consciousness. After that night, she was in a coma and couldn’t open her eyes or move her body. It’s like she was trapped by her own body.

Creak.

Mrs. Jiang walked in while wearing a mask, gloves, and a protection suit. Standing beside Liu QingHe’s bed, she held onto her thin palm and said while sobbing, “Qing Qing, I’m sorry. Aunt is useless and couldn’t save you. My poor Qing Qing ah.. You must be in so much pain.”

Mrs. Jiang looked at those needles that stabbed Liu QingHe’s body and she burst into wailing. Pounding her own chest, she said,”Qing Qing, should aunt let you go? But Aunt is unwilling, you are still so young. Your life has just begun and yet you..”

Liu QingHe wants to comfort her aunt, telling her that she feels no pain, so she doesn’t need to feel sad for her. But, no matter how much she wanted to open her mouth, her body was not responding.

Mrs. Jiang cried for a long time before she finally made the decision to let her go. With her eyes swollen, she said while caressing Liu QingHe’s face, “Qing Qing, Aunt will follow your will to donate your organs. If.. If you meet your mom there, tell her that Aunt is sorry. Sorry for not taking good care of you, sorry for letting her down. My lovely Qing Qing ah, Aunt will pray for you to be reincarnated into a good family that will love and care for you.” After saying those words, she kissed her forehead before leaving the room.

Aunt, I’m really grateful for your kindness in raising me up. Thank you for all your love, care, and sacrifice, Aunt. QingQing loves you.

Liu QingHe said those words in her heart. She knew that with her current condition, there is no way for her to be saved. She could feel her brain was dying. After not knowing how long, the doctors come to the room together with her aunt. She could hear the doctor’s movement. 

“Mrs. Jiang, we need your signature on the donation document.” A young doctor said while giving stacks of documents to Mrs. Jiang.

Looking at those documents, her swollen eyes were red and a tear rolled down her face. Taking those documents with a shaking hand, she signed the papers one by one. Agreement to donate the kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, pancreas, intestines, corneas, bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, veins, heart valves, bone marrow, even her limbs and skins.

Basically her QingQing agreed to donate every part of her body to save other people’s lives. But what about herself? She couldn’t even have an intact body after her death.

Mrs. Jiang signed the papers while tears dripped into the document, leaving a wet patch on each of the documents. All doctors in the room bowed their heads towards the young girl who lies in the bed. Finished with the papers, the doctor said with a hoarse voice, “Mrs. Jiang, please.”

For a brain dead patient, the hospital will let the patient’s family or guardian press the button that stops all the support machines. But, if the family couldn’t do it, the doctors will do it for them. It’s a very hard decision for the patient’s family to make and sometimes it could leave a trauma to the family.

Mrs. Jiang walked to the side of the bed. Holding onto Liu QingHe’s hand, she said while caressing her face, “Qing Qing, it won’t be painful anymore. You can go to sleep now.” With a shaking hand, she pressed on the red button on the main machine.

Biipp… wuunngg…

One by one the supporting machine was shut down until leaving only the heart monitor that was still working. 

Biip.. biip.. biip.. biiipppp…..

The heart rate monitor’s sound became slower and slower before finally a flat long sound was left. Mrs. Jiang wailed when she heard the flat sound. Hugging onto her body that slowly became cold, she was crying desperately.

“Patient Liu QingHe, 21 years old, female. Time of death, 21st june 2106, 00:01 AM.”

That was the last thing Liu QingHe heard before her mind blanked and her soul floated from her body.
