Vol. 2 Chapter 1: Prologue

Erika Ojima was the only daughter of the Ojima Conglomerate. She always got whatever she wanted, be it a castle from a story she liked, or the destruction of the company of a classmate she didn’t particularly like, just to enjoy their humiliated faces.

No one matched her in studies or athletics, either. Every single person other than her was of a lower caste, and that’s been taught to her ever since she was a child.

However, when she entered Touou High’s middle school, she came in contact with something that should’ve been impossible. Her new source of frustration was the next head of the Usami family, Kyou Usami.

And that girl was better than Erika in everything. Be it in academics, athletics, or any other possible area, Usami was leaps ahead. The only thing that could match that newfound enemy was the power her family had.

Unlike Usami, however, she couldn’t wield that power freely. She understood that, in the future, she’d have to marry someone powerful and take a supporting role, instead of being the catalyst.

Realizing she wouldn’t be able to reach Usami even in her future, she was filled with a feeling she’s never felt before, jealousy.

It was an emotion that only those who had not could feel, so when she realized her newfound sentiment, she recognized it was something she couldn’t, and shouldn’t be feeling.

From there, she investigated Usami’s weaknesses with every means at her disposal, but no matter how long she tried, she could not find a single end of a thread. Though, just when she was beginning to wonder if she would have to live with these feelings forever, Usami’s valet, Haruki Shuu, appeared.

On the brink of giving up, she came to know of Haruki’s existence, and she trembled with delight. If I use this man, I can beat that woman! She screamed inside, laughing like a madman at that moment.

Satisfied with her laughter, she began machinating plans to use him, all so she could bring about the fall of Kyou Usami.

“Hm?”

As Usami and I walked to school together, I notice something thin inside my shoebox.

“What the hell?”

Curious, I picked it up and sure enough, it was a letter. A love letter? I thought, but it couldn’t be. I just transferred here, after all.

So just as I was about to stuff it inside my bag—

“Haru… What’s that?”

Dull-eyed, she glared at the letter I held. Not even a glimmer of light reflected off her eyes, and she didn’t take them off the piece of paper either. She then asked something.

“Aren’t you gonna read what’s in it…?”

“N–No, no, I’ll read it later…”

“Heh~ I see…”

She only gave me a curt, somewhat blank expression, never taking her eyes off the letter… Sh*t!

I sensed something dangerous, so I immediately stuffed it inside my bag.

“L–Let’s go to class, Usami!”

“Oh yeah~ That’s right~”

When I urged her to go to the classroom, she only answered me blankly and did not move at all. I knew if I didn’t do anything, it’d be bad, so I took her hand and tried to pull her inside, then proposed something in response to the letter.

“Usami, if you care so much about what’s written inside the letter, wanna read it together at lunch?”

Her eyes light up at my suggestion, then, she gets upset and starts fidgeting.

“B–But wouldn’t that be rude to the person who sent the letter? What if it’s a love letter? I couldn’t possibly~!”

“You wouldn’t go around telling everyone what’s inside, right, Usami?”

“Y–Yeah. Is it fine, then?”

“Yes. Besides, even if it is a love letter, my answer will be a definite no.”

“I-Is that so~! Would it be better if it was one?”

“It’ll be fine, Usami! And I…”

I like you…

Usami thought of my proposal for a while, but after some consideration, she agreed.

“Okay then! So we’ll read it together!”

“Yeah.”

With that, we walked together to the classroom.

The fourth period had ended, and we both headed to the rooftop. Of course, I made sure to bring the letter with me. Once there, we sat down in a corner like usual, and I was about to open my box’s lid. However, I noticed her fidgeting a lot.

“Usami, is there anything wrong?”

“W–When will we read the letter, I wonder~!”

She confirmed my suspicions about why she was so squeamish. I then answer her.

“Should we read it now?”

“N–No, I was just curious!”

Saying that, she went back to preparing her own lunch. Though it was obvious she was upset.

“Well then… guess I’ll open it now.”

I took the letter out of my pocket. During every moment I did so, her agitation grew and grew.

“I–Is it fine?”

“I don’t mind doing it now or later, since it won’t change the outcome.”

And besides, it can’t be a love letter…

My words calmed Usami down, and she made up her mind. Straightening her posture, she gazed intently at my opening of the letter.

“Okay, here we go.”

“Y–Yes!”

I giggle at her nervousness and finally open it. Inside was a folded piece of paper, and unfolding it revealed…

Dear Haruki Shuu,
I’ve been interested in you for the longest time, and I really want to express my heartfelt feelings. I’ll be waiting for you behind the gym today after school… I’ll always be waiting for you.

Those were the words written inside… It really was—

“Isn’t it a love letter!?”

“Seems like it…”

Learning it really was a love letter, Usami asked me, extremely upset.

“Ha–Ha–Haruki?! What are you going to do?!”

“I’ll tell them ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t’.”

Relieved, she exhaled loudly.

“I–I see… Well then, I’ll be waiting for you at the school gates after class!”

“Okay. I’ll be there as soon as I’m done.”

“…”

Silence then fell between us. I tried to break the silence and dissipate the weird lingering atmosphere, urging her to eat her food.

“… Let’s eat then, shall we?”

“Yeah!”

And after chatting until the bell rang, we finished our lunch.
