There were classes in the evening so Jiang Yi didn’t plan to stay long, secretly leaving a box of mint candy before leaving. The pink candy box was changed to a green one, stuck between Chu Chuan’s specialised course textbook.
He was drowning in happiness about the fact that Chu Chuan didn’t stop him from calling him Chuan ge as he walked back, walking face first into a Chu Jia Ri wearing a cap and mask. It was too late to pretend to be a passerby.
Chu Jia Ri was the same— squeamish to the point even a single bit of sun was unacceptable. He covered his face completely, wearing a mask in the morning. But Jiang Yi knew him for too many years, he only needed to see the phoenix eyes left outside and could recognise him.
Chu Jia Ri threw away all pretences and grabbed his wrist, his high pitched voice sounded like the flapping of a bee’s wings in the mask, “What are you doing here?! Exchange students don’t stay here!”
Jiang Yi never knew how to deal with him, raising his brows as he asked lazily, “Classmate who are you?”
He was secretly rejoicing over the fact that he was facing the Chu Jia Ri from 10 years ago, and not the 20 years old Chu Jia Ri. He actually wasn’t very close to Chu Jia Ri in Year 2, but the Chu Jia Ri from 10 years later he treated without scruples and never gave him any face.
Chu Jia Ri was so mad smoke almost rose from his head, yet he couldn’t retort and could only warn him fiercely, “Who cares who I am! I know you like Chu Chuan but he has a boyfriend, don’t even think about getting close to him!”
Jiang Yi made a sound of acknowledgement, shocked at Chu Jia Ri’s counterattack. Although time went backwards and his intelligence seemed to go back to 20 years old too, he still knew how to stand on moral high ground to suppress the love rival.
His calm eyes met with Chu Jia Ri’s, lowering his voice and spoke warmly as if he was talking to an old friend, “Chu Jia Ri, I gave you a fair chance to compete in our last life, shouldn’t you return it now?”
Chu Jia Ri stood frozen in shock, the colour draining from his face beneath the mask, not a single word could go through him now. He raised his head hurriedly. And as the sunlight pierced his pupils, he seemed to see the end of all his hard work.
He had thought that as long as he pretended to be decent with too many cards up his sleeve, he could scare Chu Jia Ri into retreating. But it had instead agitated him and did the opposite.
Jiang Yi curled up in the corner of the milk tea shop, quietly watching Chu Chuan’s silhouette and the Chu Jia Ri that never left his side, “……”
Chu Chuan really wasn’t wrong. With the stubbornness Chu Jia Ri possessed, if he wanted to threaten and scare him, it would only make the other person’s desire to retaliate burn brighter.
Evan’s persuading calls came one after the other. Jiang Yi could only carry the guitar beside him, push the door of the milk tea shop and leave.
Jiang Yi’s guitar was taught by Evan, his habit of playing the guitar in school to earn money was also formed in America. Every Valentine’s Day and Christmas, Evan and he would carry their guitar and stand at the largest fountain in the shopping mall, pretending to be stray singers on the streets.
And this black-haired, black-eyed person who could stand out in the face of Asians could be considered the largest selling point of the Asian-Western Band of Evan and him. Within a Chinese School today, it was clear that the situation was flipped over.
He and Evan stood under a big tree opposite the milk tea shop, behind them were the large expanse of blue sky, white clouds and a broad river connecting to the sky. It was currently Saturday evening, the sunset glowed across the river, sprinkling golden light.

There would be fireworks across the river behind them an hour later, something they did every Saturday. Did Chu Chuan and Chu Jia Ri come to see the fireworks? Jiang Yi played chords beside Evan absently, his whole head devoted to thinking of the time he met Chu Chuan and Chu Jia Ri in the milk tea shop.
A girl asked him to play a love song, so Jiang Yi looked for Evan. Yet the Evan that was in charge of singing love songs was currently lying down with a pretty girl he just met, taking selfies. Jiang Yi cursed under his breath, going back to meet with the person.
When Chu Chuan and Chu Jia Ri came out of the milk tea store, Jiang Yi was still talking nosense, “Love songs can’t be sung carelessly, you have to take responsibility after singing it. I’ll only sing it to the person I like.”
The girl pouted as she kneeled beside him, her thin brows furrowed, “Then what kind of person do you like?”
“What kind of person…” Jiang Yi repeated slowly, looking far through the sea of people separating them, right at Chu Chuan.
His gaze circled around Chu Chuan and Chu Jia Ri silently, only releasing a breath after making sure they weren’t holding hands. He relaxed and revealed a smile, his eyes passing through the strangers walking around and taking a break, whistling in Chu Chuan’s direction.
In the few seconds his hands— which were drenched in sweat— clenched, it was as if waiting for centuries before he finally saw Chu Chuan’s face.
Jiang Yi’s eyes darkened, the hand rested on his guitar unknowingly began playing chords. The repeating beginning of the love song had already finished playing when he came back to his senses. Jiang Yi’s mouth moved, a clear and gentle voice gliding over his throat, spilling softly from his lips. (t/n: fun fact, most pop songs have the same 4 chords repeating so im assuming thats what JY meant)
It moved in the air, in everyone’s eyes. It passed through the sea of people, through the rivers and mountains, to his side.
The song came together with Jiang Yi’s misty, faraway gaze.
Chu Chuan wasn’t sure if it was the light from the sunset in his eyes or if it was the hidden stars that floated above the deep sea.
Small theatre—
After Jiang Yi left, Chu Chuan went into the washroom and stood in front of the mirror. First, he looked emotionlessly at the face in the mirror, then he raised his hand and touched his chin.
His roommates heard a buzzing sound coming from the washroom after coming back. He took a glance out of confusion and when he saw Chu Chuan shaving in front of the mirror, his eyes widened. He mumbled under his breath, pulling his phone out and sent a message. “Holy shit, what day is it today??? My Chuan ge actually shaved even when he didn’t need to go anywhere???
