Chapter 27: 20

  Jiang Yi didn’t think he would see Chu Chuan and Chu Jia Ri again. 

    It was full of people within the darkness, their phone screens emitting a weak light like the sea of stars in the night sky, falling into their eyes. Evan raised his butt, which had been hurting from sitting too long, grumbling, “Why are there so many people watching fireworks here? Have they never seen it before?”

    “After all, my country isn’t like your country, with people everywhere.”

    Evan: ……

    Evan: “I only wanted to make a joke. Jiang, you’re so boring.”

    Jiang Yi buried his head into the main page of Facebook, ignoring him. After surfing for about half an hour, his right hand had been hit by the person beside him. He didn’t bother raising his head, just saying, “Don’t knock my hand, my phone almost fell off.”

    Evan ignored his words, raising his hand to knock it again, his tone full of excitement and urgency, “Jiang! Look!”

    Jiang Yi single-handedly pulled out the 26 alphabet English keyboard and was just about to comment on a post from his classmate. After being suddenly knocked by Evan, his phone really flew out of his hand, sliding down the little slope they were on. It had successfully avoided the people on the way, sliding all the way down to the end, hitting the man sitting back facing him. 

    Jiang Yi: ……

    The man sitting at the end of the slope reached behind him to grab the phone. Jiang Yi raised his head, signalling for Evan to get his phone back. Yet after catching sight of the man looking for the owner of the lost phone, he immediately retracted the thought. 

    And silently looked at the Evan beside him. 

    Evan raised both his hands, looking at him helplessly, “Jiang, I wanted to tell that… the person you liked seemed to be sitting below.”

    Jiang Yi: ……

    He supported himself with one hand, carefully avoiding everyone else until he reached the end of the slope. Chu Jia Ri sneered viciously, “Jiang Yi, did you follow us all the way from school?” 

    Jiang Yi: ……

    He may have lost his boyfriend, but his authority couldn’t be undermined. He split his lips widely, copying the tone Chu Jia Ri had used, “I’m so sorry but I really didn’t tail the both of you this time.” 

    Chu Jia Ri glared at him but kept his mouth shut, no longer attacking him. 

    He originally had the heart to say a few more things to Chu Jia Ri, but after seeing that arrogant face of his, all his intentions were thrown out the window. Jiang Yi put his palm towards Chu Chuan, simply and clearly stating, “Thank you, please return my phone.” 

    Chu Chuan held the black screened phone, raising an eyebrow, “Yours?” 

    Jiang Yi didn’t understand what he meant, revealing a puzzled expression, “…Of course it’s mine.” Then as if thinking of something, widened his eyes in disbelief, “There’s no way that you… think that I purposely threw down someone else’s phone just to talk to you, right?” 

    Chu Chuan deliberately ignored the first half of his sentence, “Oh, so you’re taking the phone to talk to me.” 

    Jiang Yi snapped his mouth shut, scolding himself for being an idiot in his heart.

    Chu Chuan didn’t bait him again, placing the phone into his palm instead. Yet the hand didn’t leave immediately. It lit up the screen in Jiang Yi’s hand, pointing at the picture on the lock screen, laughing yet not laughing as he said, “People who don’t know would probably think it’s my phone, right?” 

    Jiang Yi: …… 

    What to do when the person you’re pursuing finds out your lock screen is their secretly taken picture? Is it too late to die on the spot? 

    Unfortunately, it was too late. Too late to even dig a hole and shove his face into it. Jiang Yi clapped his hands together, preventing the other party from seeing the screen. His eyes were blank as he stumbled to find an explanation, but he couldn’t think of a perfect excuse and could only improvise, “You might not believe it but my phone wanted to take it, not me.” 

    He only realised that the excuse he made couldn’t even trick ghosts after saying it: ……

    He closed his eyes in despair, no longer struggling against death. 

    As he had expected, he heard Chu Chuan’s sneer, “Are you saying this to trick ghosts?” 

    Jiang Yi pulled his own hair, reluctantly changing his wallpaper and deleting the only picture he had taken of Chu Chuan without him noticing under Chu Chuan’s command and surveillance, returning to Evan’s side dejectedly. 

    The loss really outweighed the gain this time. 

    As he sat down, a stream of air rushed up from the horizon opposite the river, exploding into the sky with a ‘bang!’, bringing out brilliant and beautiful colours. On the small slope across the river, excited squeals and whistles rose and fell into his ears.

    Jiang Yi stayed frozen in shock. It’s already time for the fireworks? 

    Evan whistled, taking out his guitar, singing with the rest of the excited crowd. A simple, rhythmic song and clear guitar chords spread throughout the air, humming and laughter coming in response with it. 

    In the end, Evan hugged his guitar and stood up too. 

    Jiang Yi sat alone in the noise and joy, resting his chin onto his knee somewhat dejectedly, glancing at Chu Chuan. 

    Fireworks flew in the night sky, brightening a large half of it. Jiang Yi widened his eyes, lifting his chin from his knee, his body tilting forward unconsciously. Chu Jia Ri spared him a quick glance before kneeling in front of Chu Chuan, tilting his face forward. 

    The last thing Jiang Yi saw was Chu Chuan holding Chu Jia Ri’s chin. As the fireworks faded, the remaining sparks fell into the river, his sight was once again flooded with darkness. 

    It was as if time had stopped. Jiang Yi waited anxiously, his heart as if being thrown into a pot of boiling water. Yet he never got the next bout of fireworks, only the hushed voice of the person beside him, “That’s it? Isn’t it way too short?” 

    Evan’s voice hovered by his ears as he grabbed at the grass as if he didn’t hear what he said. 

    Did they kiss? Or did they not?

    Jiang Yi bit his lips, his whole body was cold.
