The waiting room of North City Central Hospital For Pheromones was almost vacant by now, only a few people were waiting for their turn in the lobby. A TV program was playing in a corner at medium volume. The creak of automatic sliding doors and intercoms ringing loudly in the hallway could be heard often. There were not many people in the corridor or reception area since it was a working day.
A man walked towards the stack of magazines and books and picked up a pamphlet. A middle-aged woman, squeezing beside another person, stared down at her hands, twisting and knotting them repeatedly to hold back her anxiety. A few nurses were travelling back and forth from the doctor’s chamber to the hallway.
The piquant smell of hospital disinfectant invaded Rexa Black’s nostrils. She rubbed her nose lightly and shifted in her seat to find a comfortable position. Rexa glanced around the room, most of the people were engaged in their world, not minding the pungent odour.
The rusty, sliding door creaked again, announcing the arrival of another patient. A young, handsome boy in his teens strode in, clutching a file. Whispers among people halted quickly with the arrival of this newcomer. Rexa shamelessly ogled the boy.
The boy at the centre of the attention didn’t seem to care about those curious stares, he was used to them.
The youth was handsome with dark brown hair and cold, hazel eyes. His thin and narrow crescent moon eyebrows frowned in displeasure as he rubbed the tip of his nose. His defined cheekbones and rich, fawny skin made him more appealing.
He’s so handsome…He must be an Alpha. Rexa assumed instantly.
Despite his attractive features, an uncordial aura surrounded him, making him unapproachable. But Rexa wasn’t someone to back out just like that.
She walked towards the seemingly unreachable stranger and stood in front of him. Rexa shyly tugged her skirt and then forwarded her phone with a tiny grin.
“Hi! Can I have your number?”
Silence. Except for the occasional rustling of papers and low voices of others, the surrounding around the two of them seemed to have frozen. The boy turned his head and glared at her coldly. The icy chill in those hazel eyes made Rexa tremble a little.
“I don’t use phones,” a husky voice replied with indifference.
A clear-cut answer that meant ‘get lost’.
Rexa tried to open her mouth to speak but those glaring sharp eyes caused her voice to die down immediately. She retreated and stomped off to her seat.
A middle-aged man coughed lightly, easing the sudden awkward atmosphere.
“Mr Ivanov, your file please,” the nurse who came out of the doctor’s cabin called out.
The young boy stood up and handed over his file to her.
A few minutes later, the petite nurse with short black hair returned.
“Dimir Ivanov, it’s your turn.”

Inside the chamber.
The doctor retrieved the medical examination file from the table and gestured for Dimir to sit. He carefully scrutinized the report and then raised his eyes at Dimir.
When the doctor glanced at him, Dimir could imagine what he was probably thinking.
The examination report stated that he was an Alpha but his 178 cm height made it hardly believable. Alphas were dominating, with strong pheromones, unlike him. Even though he looked like an Alpha, his height and pheromones spoke otherwise.
Whatever the doctor thought, he didn’t voice it out. Instead, he forwarded the file to the nurse lady.
“Mr Ivanov, according to the report, it seems you differentiated into your second gender recently. But your pheromones…” the doctor paused for a while and peeked at Dimir. Seeing that Dimir had no reaction, he continued. “Your pheromones are hardly there. According to the diagnosis, you are suffering from pheromone disorder which is rarely seen among Alphas. However, this is not something extremely critical.”
The doctor finished his diagnosis and observed Dimir’s expression. For an Alpha, Dimir was unusually calm. After all, the Alphas of this era were full of aggressiveness and vigour. It was really surprising to see such a tranquil Alpha in this kind of situation.
“This kind of rarity is seen among five per cent of the Alpha population during their initial differentiation stage. This is not life-threatening. After going through your rutRut period is the same as Omega's estrus period, your pheromones will become more stable. For now, I’ll list some medicines,” the doctor explained while typing swiftly.
Pheromone Disorder. Dimir already predicted that something was wrong with his pheromones since he had differentiated into an Alpha.
“Mr Ivanov, your rut should arrive soon. Do you feel any agitation or discomfort these days?” the doctor spouted, emphasizing the word discomfort.
Except for the first three days of the differentiation period, Dimir didn’t experience any abnormalities. He wondered if his rut was perhaps delayed. Usually, Alphas and Omegas experienced their Awakening FeverRut and Estrus is commonly called Awakening Fever in this novel within three months of differentiation.
“No. Do you think my rut is delayed?” Dimir couldn’t help but ask.
The doctor frowned in confusion at his words.
“Yes, quite possible. Still, we can’t be fully sure.”
Dimir thanked the doctor and then walked out towards the exit.
The smell of light caramel pheromones lingered inside the room.
