Chapter 110: Guns
...
"And there goes another one..."
"What?"
"Nothing..."
Sitting peacefully around a table at the library, Aspen and Yuuki could be seen reading books with calm expressions on their faces as they glanced at the pages showing obvious interest in whatever was in them.
Aspen, though, was looking from time to time at the wall while some noises could be heard coming from there. A relaxed smile forming on his lips every time a strange breaking sound echoed around the walls.
Yuuki, on the other hand, had gotten accustomed to the number of sounds that appear every day while she is reading. So she just shrugged it aside and continued reading as if nothing was happening.
*Tap*
After some minutes passed Aspen finally closed the book in his hands and stood up to go and fetch another book now that he had finished with the previous one.
"There's certainly nothing else of interest in this library... I already read everything that I may have needed one day... then, what should I do now...?"
Aspen started checking up the titles of every book he had yet to read, and looked inside them briefly for a short moment before changing into another book.
He had already checked every magic book that there was in this library, and he had yet to control properly most of them, so he had no more interest in magic-oriented books. He was more interested in craftmanship-oriented books, be it blacksmithing, technological advances, or even creating artifacts like the Storm Spear. Unfortunately, the library just had a few books related to those things and had more content about the Nuwa's kingdom history.
"Nuwa's history part IV... Nuwa's history part XII... Talk about self-centered... Hmm?"
Right at that, he managed to spot a pack of old books that seemed to have been read not long ago... probably by Yuuki or someone else.
The name of the book was pretty clear about its contents, something that aroused Aspen's curiosity enormously when he glanced at it.
"Vestiges of the old Humanity?"
"Those books were written by a paranoic writer that was worried about humanity's future during the period where they were still in a war against Cthulhu and his army. Thus, he decided to write and take pictures of every aspect of the old human civilization in case something bad happened. There are pretty interesting things there, but we have not been able to take much out of them, aside from wonder and amazement at the level of technology we humans used to have before the Great War..."
Yuuki, who appeared besides Aspen, explained calmly while grabbing one of the books that were on the shelf, something that made Aspen turn to look at the books with an obvious interest in his gaze.
As he opened one of them, he managed to see some very modern-looking buildings in the photos there, and the people walking around in the photo also had very more detailed and processed clothes like from the modern age where he came from. Though, there was still a slight medieval feeling to them.
Nothing else called the attention ofAspen in these photos, and there wasn't much of a change in the rest of the photos as well... People living their daily lives, what they ate, what culture they had... Nothing too interesting to watch.
At most, the most important thing he saw in the book was what seemed to be a party in a magician guild celebrating the new year... That's all...
Then he moved to another book, since he had nothing else to read, he might as well see how did the humans before the Great War live their lives.
The second book, however, was much more damaged than the first one, either some pages had small bits of them tore apart, or whatever was in them had disappeared, it seemed that the thousand years that passed had actually taken an effect in this book, unlike the first one.
Unfortunately, even this one didn't seem to hold something worth his interest, as everything he could see was people living their daily lives in different aspects of society. Be it homeless people, or chefs, or even some kids playing something like soccer... Or that was until he managed to see something in the corner of one of the pictures.
In the pocket of someone, there was a small object of a peculiar shape that he could recognize very well...
'That's... a gun...'
Indeed, although it didn't look as modern as those guns you could see in movies, it was indeed a gun that was in the pocket of that person... Something he had yet to see in this post-apocalyptic/medieval world where he was reborn... And until now, never had he heard someone talk about guns, not even once.
He was sure, if guns existed in this world then the war couldn't have been such a worry matter to the humans. Even though Goblins were indeed strong, to the point where he doubted they could die from just one or two bullets, he was sure that humans could have a much more easy time dealing with goblins using guns.
That's not counting the Goblin commander though... That guy seemed to be completely unaffected by the amount of blood that left his body in one go...
Creatures with high HP's are rather strange when it comes to dying, because they either regenerate the injuries on their bodies but not the hp lost, like the Sand Elemental or the Eye of Cthulhu, or simply seem to have an incredible ability to survive even with the most dangerous of wounds, like the Goblin Commander or the lunatic cultists, that were still alive even after having horrible wounds in their bodies or losing deathly amounts of blood as if it was nothing...
Not like he is any different though... He had already lost an arm before, but he regenerated it back in just a few hours.
'If they had guns... then wouldn't that mean that maybe there are still guns left somewhere around the world...? No, is it possible that this Kingdom has guns? They managed to preserve a lot of magic tomes from before the Great War after all... It couldn't be strange for them to have some...'
Then, with very high curiosity, Aspen touched Yuuki's shoulder and asked her about the gun in the person's pocket.
"That's a gun, a lost weapon that our ancestors, unfortunately, did not manage to preserve during their journey to escaping from the monsters... It was said to be very powerful and fast as well, but we, unfortunately, did not manage to bring it with us, nor were we able to replicate them using the tales that our ancestors told us as a guide. So we just ended up settling for magic as it was our only way of fighting against monsters without getting overwhelmed"

Aspen watched calmly at the picture before he then closed the book and placed it back where it was.
Yuuki, who thought Aspen could ask more about it was startled at his sudden action and raised an eyebrow in wonder before she decided to ask him about it.
"Don't you want to know more about it?"
"Nah, they don't exist anymore, and even if I find them, I doubt they are still working. A thousand years or so have passed after all...By the way, why are you here? Weren't you studying over there a moment ago?"
"Hmm... Well, I was, until some servants started taking away the corpse of another assassin that was for some reason stuck at the wall... And seeing a corpse isn't exactly what you could call a motivator for studying..."
"Well, sorry about that..." Aspen smiled wryly before he then proceeded to go and take a seat at the table. This time to take a small nap.
However, right as he was about to do it, suddenly his senses exploded in alert, and time slowed down for him automatically.
As his eyes scanned rapidly the room, he noticed a small round object coming towards them at a great velocity from outside the window.
He could guess somewhat what it was, but he was not certain who, or what sent it towards this place. Nevertheless, he still dashed towards Yuuki and moved her behind him before he then created a small shield of mana around him to protect them from what was to come.
*BOOOOM!!!*
The walls of the castle were blown away, and the library was soon engulfed in an explosion.
From outside the library, the sound of something moving rapidly through the air soon reached the ears of Aspen, and as he glanced outside, his gaze turned into an annoyed one.
'Seriously?'
From outside the shattered wall of the library, which by the way was on a fourth floor, a giant pirate ship moved rapidly through the air as if it was an airplane, and a figure standing on top of its front laughed crazily while caressing its reddish beard...
"Gahahaha!!! And that's how you get a job done easily!! I thought the royal castle would put a much more hard challenge if we were to attack it one day, but it was not able to resist even one of our cannonballs... Imagine what could happen if we used all of them, Gahahaha!!"
Hearing the man's loud voice, dozens of other voices laughed heartily after seeing that their attack has been so effective.
Back at the library, Aspen looked at the somewhat confused Yuuki, before he then sighed exhaustedly and took out his Blood butchered to ready himself for battle.
"I'll need you to support me with your magic and attack at the weak ones while I deal with the boss. He doesn't seem to be a normal pirate..." Aspen whispered in Yuuki's ear in a low voice so that the pirates couldn't know they were still alive.
And he was indeed not a normal pirate. This was the pirate Captain, another mini-boss from the hardmode, though a little bit weaker than the Sand Elemental when it comes into Hp. Fortunately, the world still seemed to have some compassion for Aspen, as the Pirate captain he had in front of him was indeed a lot weaker than any of his versions from the hardmode.
