Chapter 24: The uncertain future
When all the cultists saw me appear from the side of the now crumbled wall, a surprised expression appeared across all their faces. They took their fighting stances and begun to prepare for the incoming battle.
I soon became surrounded by nine cultists that created several fireballs with their magic, ready to shoot it at me at any moment.
"Who are you?!" One of them said when he saw me enter their meeting place like it was my home by kicking the walls.
Not like I could kick the walls of my home just to enter...
"The alchemist!" The old guy from the militia said while glaring at me with obvious hostility.
"What?!" All of them said in unison.
Before I could even say another word, they started shooting the fireballs in my direction with the intention of killing me instantly.
However, the old guy had a grim expression on his face, even when he saw me get surrounded by the nine cultists and attacked simultaneously, he probably thought that if I was able to kill a goblin then this amount of magic was not going to be able to kill me.
And he was certainly right.
I swung my silver sword at full speed and cut all the incoming attacks in half. The fireballs just dispersed after being slashed, leaving the cultists completely defenseless after using so much mana, which I obviously used to my advantage.
"Wha-BFMM!!" One of the cultists tried to speak, but was brutally kicked on the face by me half sentence.
Soon they recovered from the shock after seeing me completely unscathed, and took out daggers from inside their robes, the old guy from the militia included.
It didn't take long before I left all the cultists laying on the ground unconscious.
The old man was the only one that actually managed to dodge clean hits from me.
"You fucker...!" He spat out while glaring at me with furious eyes.
He tried stabbing me at an astonishing speed, even for a human, this speed was incredible. That's probably one of the reasons for why he had such a big rank on the militia.
However, compared to an elf like Alyem... he was nothing
I kicked his legs and although his stance was really stable and tough, it just couldn't hold against my enhanced strength.
*Tuth*
"AHH!"
He fell to the ground and was unable to stand back up again, probably due to some broken bones on his legs that my kick inflicted.
"Alright, time to start talking" I said while pointing the tip of my sword against his chest.
Despite the expression of pain he had, a small chuckle escaped his mouth when I threatened him.
"Hehehehe..."
"Why should I tell you bastard?! Just kill me already"
I frowned at his response, was he really that fanatical to sacrifice his own life just to protect the secrets of this supposed Cthulhu cult?
"Don't you want to live?" I asked.
"I don't care anymore. If it means to take revenge on those filthy goblins then I could gladly die" A mad look and a smile appeared on his face.
"Why not take your revenge on the incoming battle against them?"
"You don't understand a thing right? You think we have an opportunity in the next battle? You think we can win just because you killed one of them?... You are living a dream brat, You have yet to understand that the reality isn't like those stories about heroes. I have understood through the years that humans are just livestock for the other races, and no matter what we do, we won't win..."
"... We are just his toys, they just allow us to continue living because they want to. Otherwise, we could all be dead by now"
"... Humans won't win against goblins..."
"... Cthulhu is the only way for me to get my revenge. The only thing a pitiful human like me can do is to rely on the Great Cthulhu..."
"...The only one that can bring chaos and death to all the races on this world"
As I listened to his speech, I knew I couldn't refute anything he said. The only reason I could win against these goblins was because of my skills and stats beyond what a human could reach...
People like them... couldn't do nothing but to stare at the goblins doing as they pleased. Killing everyone they once cared about, and destroying the life they have been living for so many years.
What other option did they had but to rely on Cthulhu?
...
Soon the old guy started bleeding from all the orifices on his body, and his veins started becoming scarily more visible on his skin than before.
Poison?
"Brghlbrghhg" He soon started convulsing and a lot of foam started coming out of his mouth.

It didn't take long before his body laid lifeless on the ground, getting covered on the pool of his own blood
...
Sigh...
Have I been dreaming as he said?
...
Maybe I have, but that's why I have to prepare for the incoming battle. Better equipment, an ampler arsenal of magic, and better weapons were the things that I could need in the incoming battle.
Maybe It was time to reveal part of my abilities to the militia.
...
I called some people from the militia and after some investigation they concluded that the old guy was actually working for the cultists all the time and telling them our every move.
That's why they ambushed our group at the mountains.
They knew we could be there.
Old man Easton was actually a bit shocked after discovering about the old guy being a cultist all along, It seemed that they knew each other for quite some time.
I tried to talk with him for a bit, but he said that he needed some time alone.
I just accepted and left him alone. I was not a professional psychiatrist that knew the perfect thing to say to him to improve his mood and make him get better.
I guess these 6 years of not being friends with anyone made me a bit socially awkward...
Sigh...
I was currently walking across the streets while having these kinds of thoughts once in a while.
It took me a while to realize the gravity of my situation right now.
They said the ritual was near being completed... so that means they are bringing Cthulhu back? Do I have to fight the Moon lord so soon?
Was Moon lord even Cthulhu?
Either way, I doubt I could even stand a chance against those kinds of bosses right now.
It could be just a phantasmal death ray from his eyes and then *Poof*. Not even a speck of dust could remain from me.
Once again, this world was different to the game, and the order of the bosses didn't matter a shit in real life.
Damn...
Why am I so unlucky?
Maybe I could try to survive instead of trying to kill such a monster.
And there was also the fact that a war against goblins was coming.
Either of them required me to prepare fully If I didn't want to be killed that easily.
Maybe I could try and improve the walls of the city with my construction abilities? Or maybe I could make thousands of potions for the soldiers to actually survive a few hits from the goblins? Humanity only had one more opportunity to survive, after that it could be over.
The goblins
Or the humans.
And I could make sure to not fail this time.
Even If the people here were assholes, there were still children and families that didn't deserve to be butchered alive by those green bastards.
In order to protect what I considered morally correct, and to preserve the small speck of humanity I still had from before coming to this world. I had to prevent them from suffering the consequences of the war.
But for that I needed to gather more resources.
And I knew the best place to do that.
Yes.
It was time to go mining.
