Chapter 1: A New Beginning

In an inconspicuous alley of a bustling city, a seven-year-old kid breathed his last, and a new soul took its place—the cause of death starvation. And the child being an orphan didn't help. The child was left to fend for himself from the tender age of three. And ever since he could remember, the child only knew poverty, empty stomachs, begging, and scrounging for leftovers. Left without a choice in a bid to survive, the child resorted to thieving and pickpocketing.

Quite a typical case that one, throughout the vast city. But what was not typical was a new soul accidentally settling in. The experiences of the child and his own making him feel a deep sadness. Both were orphans. Both had to fight for themselves, just that his reality was far less crueler than the child's. Wait, they were not two different people now. They were one and the same, just from two incredibly distinct worlds, even having given themselves the same name. What a twist of fate that was, isn't that right Amon

It was dark in the slums even in the afternoon, but the alley was even more unlit. Their memories having merged, Amon knew not to venture out carelessly, whether day or night. Even if the city was bustling, thieves and beggars like him would go missing in broad daylight, and none would care. What more so of the night? He had heard some of the things that happened to the kids. Powerless, without backing, and too weak to fend for themselves, the kids would be kidnapped for unspeakable reasons or, in despair, themselves join the vile to survive. A world and kingdom of a backward age, lawless society, and martial artists that could cultivate power mighty enough to move seas and blast mountains was far more brutal than he was prepared to face. News took ages to travel, and by the time those in power got the news, those who had done the deed would long vanish. Even if the guards or others like them got the information, they wouldn't care. Children like them would be born loads every year, every month. So what if some disappear? And most disappearances were related to those above them in position; they couldn't go messing around with things they shouldn't see or hear because they didn't have necks to spare. Thus, corruption ran riot.

Still, Amon couldn't keep staying in the alley. The alley was not safe. What if some evil martial artist came to these shadows? Or some gangs caught him?

He scooted a little over to a puddle to see his face. It was pretty ordinary and marred by dirt. Going by the memories, the kid would be at the market at this time but got a high fever yesterday night due to the heavy downpour. That was the last nail in the coffin with the conditions he was in.

The kid only went to places devoid of the gangs. Although most of the territories were already carved up by the gangs, there were a few nooks and crannies where brats like him operated. And with a city this big, the nooks and crannies were many. He changed places every day and slept in the alleys. The kid led a solitary life and chose to keep to himself.

Now, Amon would have to find a place to work. A place that could provide him sleep and food. He would figure the rest later. But before he could get a move on, a cold, unfeeling, emotionless, mechanical voice sounded in his head.
