I pulled out my phone to check the time.  Damn it.  The phone screen was cracked.  I could still read the time but barely.  It was late evening Sunday.  I figured 3-4 hours to get back to the portal.  So we had plenty of time.

The hug caught me off guard, but I returned it.  I got similar hugs from all the elves, and so did Iris and Jade.  I handed the bag of aether crystals to Iris since she would be the one trading them in.  As we started walking, Iris whispered to me, “The hug is a sign of friendship and trust among the elves.  Allowing you to get close is a sign they trust you not to attack them.”  I looked at Jade, who was behind us and chatting with Kiri.

“So Jade, guess the elves were not as bad as you thought,” I said clearly.  My words were met with eyes of daggers as I had just embarrassed her in front of Kiri.  Note to self: Maybe I should stop trying to be funny and tease Jade.  She could kick my ass in a fight, and I wanted to continue using her aether core to create life essence for me. 

Kiri smirked and said.  “It is wise to be weary of elves.  Not all of us are friendly, and we tend to bend situations to our will.”  I guess she was referring to us escorting her back to our world.  Jade and Kiri continued to talk as we made our way through the majestic trees.

The rocky slope was a bit of a climb, and Iris directed us to the Matron crab a few hundred feet uphill.  It smelled terrible, and some scavenger birds were already picking at it.  Iris got out her harvesting ball and retrieved the crystal from the dead crab.  When it burned itself out of the shell’s interior and attached to the ball, it was a marble-sized aether crystal.  Jade gasped, “A tier 2 lesser crystal.  Damn, quite the harvest.”  I looked around at the woman I was walking with for an explanation.

Iris answered, a little surprised herself, “It is worth around $2,000,000, Caleb.”  My jaw dropped.  “Each tier higher crystal is about 10 times the value.  So the lesser tier 1 crystal is $200, a greater tier 1 is worth $20,000, and lower tier 2 crystals are worth $2,000,000.  This crystal can be used to manufacture a fairly powerful magic item.” 

I was giddy.  “So making money is that easy.  Just kill a few tier 2 monsters, and you are a millionaire?  We should find an upper tier 2 tier beast, and it would be worth 200 million!”

Jade laughed at me, “Caleb do you think you could have beaten this monster in a face-to-face confrontation?  Also, lesser tier 2 creatures are super rare in this transit between the 22^nd and 23^rd layer.  I had assumed the matron crab was just an upper tier 1 creature.” 

So maybe I had been lucky.  “Ok, that is fine.  We won’t go looking for tier 2 monsters.  Jade, are you still going to show me how to fight?”  We were climbing the hill again, and Iris and Kiri got ahead of us as Jade was moving gingerly. 

“Yeah, about that, Caleb.  You see, my clan has strict rules after copulating.  We are monogamous and only have one partner.  So you will need to only have sex with me in the future,” Jade said seriously.  I stumbled and had a shocked look.  I was already planning on how to escape Jade’s clutches when she laughed at me, “I am just fucking with you, Caleb!  Your face!”  She bent over laughing.  Iris and the elf looked back but kept walking.  Well, I guess she got me back for calling her out in front of Kiri.

“Oh, Caleb,” she said with a sort of sad and concerned face, “I am not joking.  My parents are…well, they are the closest thing to royalty among the catkin.  You sullying their daughter would require a response.”  My happy, laughing face slowly mellowed.  I was not sure if she was serious, but after a minute, I deemed it was the truth.

“So I just bagged my first princess?”  I asked, trying to sound cocky, but I was already imagining an entire clan of tigerkin hunting me down and mounting my head on a wall.  She initiated this illicit coupling, and I was the one in danger. 

“Princess?” She scoffed.  “No more like a duchess.  My father is just a member of the beastkin conclave.  I would say the wolfkin and minotaurs are the ones that share the most power.”  Seeing my concern, she continued, “Don’t worry.  Since you are a powerful human mage, they might approve of the relationship.  Though mother doesn’t really like humans.”

We walked for a bit, getting closer to the cave.  Jade spoke, “Do you know what happens when a beastkin and human mate?” She seemed shy, like she really didn’t want to talk about this.

It all made sense now.  So Mandy and Jade did, in fact, want to devour me sexually.  I was their baby lotto.  “Are we not a little young to be thinking of children…I mean, our relationship is just a few hours old…I couldn’t support kids…I…” I stopped stumbling over my words.  I was sterile, and even if I wasn’t, I was fairly certain I could control my semen’s viability based on whether or not I bestowed it with life essence. 

She blushed, “I know not right now, but maybe after college…or after college, and we spent a few decades running the dungeon,” she said seriously.  I heard the sound of manacles being latched onto my hands and ankles.  Did Jade seriously think I was going to be a faithful partner to her for years to come?  Best to break this now, even if it costs me more life essence in the future.

“Jade, I am sorry, but I don’t think I could only have a single sexual partner.  I just…I am not built that way,” I said honestly, looking forward and not meeting her eyes.  She was silent, and we joined Iris and Kiri at the cave entrance. 

I saw the yellow handle of my maul and picked it up.  Returning to the group, Jade looked like she was thinking hard about something.  Kiri spoke, “Caleb, you can lead, and we will keep the flanks and rear clear.  Without the matron to control them, I don’t think the cave crabs will form a wave to swarm us.” I moved forward, and Jade was just behind me, followed by Kiri with her aether rifle and Iris with her light on a pole and prepared for a fireball.

The going was slow as the crabs now blindly attacked us when we got close.  The good news is we never had to deal with more than two at once.  Kiri wanted to clean out the entire massive cavern, but I nixed the idea.  We needed to get back.  I could easily see the portal line with my abyssal eyes, so we soon reached it.  We had 23 aether stones from the small crabs. 

I checked my aether in my mind space, 690/1000.  So the vortex and the transit environment were very effective in charging my aether reserves.  Now I needed to find ways to utilize it beyond opening portals and creating aphrodisiac saliva. 

Kiri spent a few minutes marking the stones with elven symbols.  They indicated there was a portal here.  Her family hadn’t been aware of it, so this way, they could easily find it.  I used 100 aether and opened the portal.  Iris and Kiri were first to enter.  Jade reached out and grabbed my arm, “I am ok with it.  You can have as many partners as you need to satisfy yourself.  But when I am ready to mate for children, you will answer my call.”  She let go of my arm and went through the portal, leaving me there stunned. 

I think she had been wrestling with my admission for the last two hours.  I was happy.  I mean, Jade could teach me to fight, and the life essence was amazing.  I stepped through the portal, and Jade was already removing her armor and putting it into her duffle bag.  I went to see how Iris was doing.

“Iris, how are you holding up?”  Her eyes were bloodshot, and she had bags under them. 

“I’m good, more than good,” she smiled at me.  “I know where my parents went, and next time we return, we can track them down.  Most likely, they are being detained by the elves in the city, so I think we just need to spend some time preparing.  I have been trying to befriend Kiri.  If she can go to the city safely when we return, then she can safely locate my parents and let me know how we can get them back.”

I think Iris was projecting the best-case scenario.  “Yeah, I think we went in there half-cocked.  You and Jade professed there was no real danger, yet we all almost died,” her face fell as my tone was not happy.  “I will decide when we are going back.  I am guessing it will be a few months, at least.  I need to know more about what we are facing and increase my incubus power.  You can use the time to learn more spells as well.”  I patted her shoulder reassuringly, “Don’t worry, Iris.  I will take you back to find your parents.” 

Jade was done, and we headed as a group back to the truck.  When we got seated in the vehicle, Kiri was full of questions.  It had been about 60 years since she had last visited our planet.  Iris had given her a lot of information during the walk, but she still had a lot of questions.  I just drove when the three women chatted away.

When we reached Iris’ house, Jade refused a ride and said she would call me.  She showered first and then walked home.  She needed to deal with the fallout from sneaking off.

Kiri was apparently going to stay with Iris until she could cash in the aether crystal.   When Kiri got the money, she would be off to England to prepare for her younger sister’s arrival.  The primary remnants of the elf clan were in Ireland, England, and France.  They had a few schools to choose from.  I did learn that she had also brought 12 upper-tier 1 crystal with her to pay for Eilina’s education.  That was about $240,000.  So I assumed it was some off-the-grid private school.

Iris was uncertain what she was going to do with the tier 2 crystal.  The lesser tier 1 crystals were very common, but someone who could get a tier 2 crystal would draw attention.  She would make inquiries but didn’t think we could sell it at this time.  Iris would be at school Monday but would be headed to the city after school to make the sales in the bazaar.  I left the two talking with each other, got into my Pathfinder, and drove home.

The drive had me thinking about all the craziness.  I was no longer a skinny kid who was too shy to talk to women.  I was now self-confident in my appearance and looked handsome and athletic.  These changes had women practically throwing themselves at me.  I liked being an incubus.

I ran upstairs and showered when I got home before joining my dad for the football game.  The Redskins played the Lions on Thanksgiving, so they were not playing today.  So we didn’t watch the game and talked mostly about hockey.  I answered my text messages as we talked.  I had to use my iPad as my phone was pretty much toast.  After school on Monday, I will have to get a new phone.  I planned to pay cash at the store.

After the game, I made my way upstairs and spent my evening working on my college courses.  I did some modules for the variety in each of the three remaining courses.  When 5:00am rolled around, I left the house for Monday’s hockey practice.
