"Ahh..."  Tian Qiao sighed, taking in the glorious view before him. The crescent moon above his head illuminated the countless corpses of the beasts. Traces of a long and hard-fought battle could be seen in every direction. Mountains split into halves, flatlands razed in ravines and lakes flowing along the created streams and cracks.

The fierce fight was now over. His family and village were safe. Something had caused the beasts to rampage out of their territories far in the west and travel to their settlement. But what could make animals like the crimson tiger and three-meter-tall gorillas flee?

"I wish I could have seen it..." Tian Qiao muttered, slowly feeling his consciousness slip away. His love for getting stronger and fighting was a close second compared to his curiosity towards... well, everything. The animals he had not seen, the places he had not been and even the food he had not eaten. The world. The unknown.

Just as he felt his journey end, he realised something was amiss. The pain was gone, but he still felt weak. He opened his eyes, and to his surprise, he had been taken inside... a house? How was this possible? He thought that the puncture wounds and lacerations would leave him dead! Ignoring that situation, his current one was even more bizarre. Tian Qiao had never felt a bed this comfortable before! It was as if he was resting on the clouds of heaven itself.

While feeling the grandeur of the bed, he heard voices approaching behind the door.

"What could we possibly do with him? Why don't we leave him alone?" A deep voice spoke.

"What? We need to kick him out! He's done nothing except bring us harm since he got here!" A higher, more feminine voice responded. They seemed to be talking about him. But how could this be? He had stopped the wave of hundreds of beasts, saving his entire village! Who would dare say that he has done nothing!?

As the door was pushed open, people with strange clothes and faces he had not seen before walked in. A sudden headache took Tian Qiao's mind by storm, muting the conversation that was happening before him. He buried his face in his palms, feeling a surge of memories piercing his mind, flooding it completely. His family, status, what he drank with his last meal and even the fantasies he had once had in this body.

Yes... This was not his body. They both shared the name of Tian Qiao, but this body had lived an entirely different life from him.

"Ughh..." Tian Qiao moaned, startling himself. His voice was higher than he remembered, just like a child's. He quickly realised that his new body was that of a child. To be precise, he was to turn twelve years old in a week.

Once the adults by his bedside heard his moan, the conversation came to a complete stop. The silence was broken by the voice of the woman he had heard earlier, with him now able to connect a face to it. It was... his mother? No, it couldn't be. His mother had died long before. It was his aunt, Huang Qiao. The person who detested him the most out of the people he knew.

"Well, now that you're awake, why don't you get up and help us clean around the house?" She flared her nostrils and took a side glance at him.

"No, how could he? He nearly died a few days ago and doesn't feel well enough yet!" The man refuted, taking his side. It was his uncle, Zou Qiao. He had always been nice to him.

Just as their voices grew louder, they heard slow and heavy footsteps approaching. The sound indicated it was someone with a cane.

His grandfather walked into the room, glancing at both of his children and then at Tian Qiao. "Let the child rest. Bring him food and something to drink, then let him rest. He needs it."

They obeyed their father's words, one happier than the other. After they both left, Tian Qiao looked at his grandfather's face. He thought his mind would feel comforted seeing his grandfather like his uncle, but that wasn't the case. His grandfather seemed neither harbour ill intent nor well wishes towards him, mingling between the two.

"What were you thinking, challenging an outer disciple of the Ethereal Cloud Sect? No matter how weak they are inside, they are always stronger than us mortals!" He finished his lecture, "Foolish brat..."

After he turned away and closed the door behind him, it seemed that Tian Qiao had finally gained some time alone. The memories were still whirring and buzzing around his mind, making things all muddled. He needed time to sort through them.

After having eaten his meal, he finally felt somewhat okay. His memories were in order, and he had a general grasp of the situation. He had always been a fast adapter, even in his past life.

Yes, his past life. It seemed he had reincarnated and taken over the body of this child. As to how much time had passed, he had no idea. The villages in his past memories were crude ones. The houses were made to be torn down easily, much like a temporary camping site. The place he was currently in was a... manor? That was what they were called. It was a space capsulated by walls, housing multiple structures. There was even a garden with enough space to run around in the front, where everyone went in and out from.

The more he thought, the more fascinating things became. What were cultivators? How did they become immortals? How could he become one? Were the powers he gained in his past life similar to theirs? His questions were followed up by even more questions, making him want to leave his bed.

In his past life, his village had to keep moving from one place to another every few years. The beasts were oppressive beings, and he couldn't protect everyone. He had no way to teach others his powers since he didn't know how he had become that strong. Just by fighting, his strength kept rising and rising.

Humans were nowhere near the top of the food chain. But now, with the powerful immortal cultivators around, humans were preying on every other species they could find. The enticement he felt at this time was something incredible. He tried pushing himself up into a sitting position, but the pain in his ribs made it feel like they would crumble at any moment. Perhaps he did indeed need to rest and recover.
