Chapter 1: Introduction

 

Abassi stood next to his wife, doing everything he can to lessen the pain that her screaming and grunting conveys. Another grunt of pain interrupted his words of encouragement and reassurance that the baby is almost out, followed by the now familiar crushing feeling in his hand.

 

“The baby’s almost out. Just one more push.” the doctor said for what felt like the millionth time.

“AARGH.” Aniela's screams of exertion rang through the room and was soon followed by the sound of a baby screaming.

 

He finally takes his eyes off his wife to take a look at his newly born son and almost has a heart attack by what he sees. The baby clearly inherited his brown skin and Abassi’s jet black hair but the glowing golden eyes with white pupils, white wings, and red halo floating above his head was something completely new.

 

Abassi turned his head back to his wife when he heard a gasp escape her mouth. A stunned lock was on her face, one that he knew was still on his and tears were running down her face. 

 

She reaches her hands out and asks, no demands for them to hand him over. “Give me my baby.” Her words seem to knock them out of their shock at the almost glowing baby. 

 

Now that his shock has waned a little, he noticed that his child’s cries don't sound like the annoying screeching that babies' cries usually sound like to him. His voice has an almost musical sound to it that just added to the angelic vibe his appearance already screamed.

 

They do a few checks on him, whispering and glancing at them as they do before handing the baby to Aniela who keeps her arms out the entire time. Abassi was glad they did because he could tell that her patience with not holding her baby was starting to wane quickly.

 

It is widely known that children usually have either one of their parents' quirks, a variant of one of them, or a completely new quirk formed by the fusion of the two. 

 

The chances of having a baby with a completely different quirk than the parents, grandparents, and great grandparents is so low that only 20 cases were reported in the last 100 years.

Remembering those super low numbers in the book he read in the past made Abassi truly understand how incredible the crying baby in front of him is. 

 

He and his wife are both young, him 26 and his wife 27, and he knows while he and his wife's great grandparents are dead,  he knows that nobody up to them has ever had wings or a halo.

 

Realizing his angelic son is so rare made him scared for his future. He has always been the type of person who worries about every possibility and having a rare ability that looks like a religious icon is just asking to be kidnapped in his mind. 

 

Religious fanatics may try to kidnap him so that he can raise him to be “who he is meant to be” or if someone can be kidnapped to be experimented on. More and more scenarios pop up in his head and he starts to make his way out the door so that he can start making moves to protect his family. 

 

He is stopped by Aniela who grabs his hand. He turns his head towards her, silently asking what's wrong. There is not a doubt in his mind that the same thoughts are running through her head because she is just as paranoid as him. 

 

And the look in her eyes when she looks at him is an even more obsessive look that she gives Abassi. “At least hold your son before you go make your plans.” The pointed look she gives him makes him a little ashamed that he hasn't even tried to hold his son yet.

 

She lifts him up and he gently takes him in his arms. He hasn't cried since he was put in Aniela's arms and Abassi lets out a sigh of relief that he doesn't cry when he's in his. 

 

The intelligent look in his eyes shocks him a little but how much trust those eyes also conveys makes him let down all his guards. He immediately knows that he would do absolutely anything to keep this child safe and happy.

 

He sits next to his wife and wraps his arm around her. Content to be happy in the moment and will worry about everything tomorrow after he has a little time with his family.
