Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Getting down in the dung

Florifel used an earth spell to stop the dung golem from escaping. She had no idea what animated them. Was it something that the horses ate? Something in the water?

She looked around. Almost all the dung had been collected in the incinerator and taken care of. This was the last golem. With a sigh, she took the shovel and wheeled the incinerator closer to the golem.

First, she took off the head. Then, the arms, and, finally, she began to grind away on the torso. Then, something caught her eyes. It was small and shiny.

"A dungeon core?" She murmured. But, the light was not moving, so she decided to finish with the golem. Least it ran off to give her more work.

When she was done, she took one look at the dung sprinkled walkway and shuddered. She would need to sweep, wash and dry that. Lilia usually did that part of the quest. But, now, Lilia was in a pleasant shop and looking at flowers.

Then, something twinkled in a corner. Florifel blinked. Right, there could be a core in here. She went in the direction of the light, ready to clobber whatever there was down there with her shovel.

Instead of a dungeon core, there was a nest down there. One with small giggling pixies in it.

"You rascals! Have you been animating the dung?" Florifel found the pixies cute, yes. But she still thought they were in need of a spanking.

"You can't catch us," and the pixies were in the air. Light enveloped the dung scattered on the walkway and ants made of dung began to walk around.

"Oh, no," Florifel looked at the ants, who were marching up at her. They stank like the horses from which bowels they had been a part of, once. No, they stank worse.

"Stay back," Florifel screamed, raising the shovel up. "Someone, help!"

She heard the lock of the stable click, and she cursed.

"You coward! You knew there were pixies in here," she screamed at the stable boy. The teen's footsteps become so quiet that he must have run away.

"Oh, what am I going to do?" The ants were advancing at her. She decided that she didn't care if the quest was a fail, she needed to get out here before there was dung in her hair. So, Florifel focused her mana on the stone floor and pieces of it broke. Becoming ants themselves. It was an A rank spell. One she rarely used because of the property damage involved. But, what were the people at the community stable going to do? Sue her?

"Go get them, boys!" Florifel commanded her legions and the carnage began. Her ants were sturdier than the dung ones, so, soon, they had the upper hand.

But Florifel was not looking at them. No, she was searching for the pixies. These little cretins had been forcing adventurers to muck the stables for years now. And that stable boy had kept quiet! Well she, Florifel, was not going to stand for it.

She saw the glistening wings near the ceiling, and she summoned a stone pedestal to get herself up. The pixies stared at her with wide eyes.

"Please don't kill us. We just took a bit of fodder each day," one of the pixies begged.

"Why did you animate the blasted dung? You could have lived in your corner without making trouble for everyone?" Florifel snapped. One of the pixies had the decency to look down.

"We need to use our magic. Or we are going to die. And it is fun to watch the adventurer's fight the golems," Florifel's eyes softened. She tapped the pixie on the head three times and thought about what she could do.

She could either treat them like normal mobs and kill them. Which she did not want, as they could talk and looked like three little girls. All cute in their pink dresses, which were covered in glitter.

Or, she could offer them a contract. It was not unheard of for a party to take mobs in their employee. Heck, the Try Hard Party had taken on two mobs, unofficially and without having ownership claims.

 If those five could do it, then, why would the guild master say no to the Budding Lilies? Every good party had a mascot. The Firebolts used to have a small puff. She wondered what happened to it. Did it die in Samkiel's tomb? Or, did Borik and Andors take it?

"How about this. I feel bad for you, and your ability could come in dead useful at a quest. Why don't you become the battle companions of the best all-girls party in the Huergaz adventurer's guild: the Budding Lilies?"

Florifel did not mention that they would be mascots, not true battle companions like a griffin, for example. Or that the Budding Lilies were the only all-girl party in the guild.

"Oh, that sounds fancy," the pixie that had been ashamed spoke.

"And better than living in the filthy stable," her friend chimed in.

"Lady, will you feed us? We eat grass and berries. But we can also eat horse feed," the three pixies hit Florifel with their best puppy dog eyes, and she melted.

"I will make sure you have the juiciest grass cuttings available in Huergaz. Even if I have to mow someone's lawn for them,” the pixies cheered and flew to Florifel's bun. They each landed on her head and took a hold of her hair.

"Hold on tight. We will be going down now,” the pedestal lowered itself to the ground gently, and Florifel looked at the damages.

"We can help," one of the pixies spoke and clapped her hands. All the stone that had been displaced walked back to the holes from which it had come. And they mended.

"You three are really something," Florifel commented, and the three pixies giggled.

"Yes, we are the perfect companions for the best all-girls party in Huergaz," one of them commented, and Florifel turned to stare at the small window. Could she fit through it? Or, should she bang on the door of the stable until that coward, the stable boy, came and unlocked the door?
