Chapter 12: Chapter 12 – Stupid and Useless

The Elite Mutant Wolf let out a loud howl and was followed by other Mutant Wolves, who jumped up and began walking in his direction. In unison, the Mutant Wolves howled at varying levels from 3 to 15.

Ethan had no idea what was happening. He was just staring at the door, trying to process the situation.

He was in a very bad position. He was cornered and trapped, unable to move. The door was his only option, but he was afraid that it wouldn't be enough to escape. Time seemed to stand still as he frantically searched for a way to escape the impending danger. Breaking through the back wall didn't seem like the right choice.

"What am I going to do? What can I do?"

He got an idea and quickly opened the door. A large Mutant Wolf was waiting for him on the other side with its red eyes fixated on him, leaving him feeling scared.

"W-what the hell?"

The large and threatening wolf stepped forward, and Ethan's legs trembled as he ran for his life. He didn't dare to glance back as he sprinted away from the approaching Mutant Wolves. He focused on his movements and made sure he didn't make any mistakes that could endanger his life.

"I don't want to die here."

After taking a few steps, Ethan noticed a Mutant Wolf from the corner of his eye, coming from ahead. He quickly glanced around and saw Mutant Wolves waiting from all directions.

He felt the ground beneath him shaking as the other Wolves began to growl.

In a split second, he manifested his Mjolnir in his right hand and attempted to strike down the Mutant Wolf blocking his path. However, a taller and bigger figure blocked him, revealing itself to be the Mutant Wolf Elite.

Ethan was thrown off balance and felt like he was about to be attacked by the monster. He knelt, his hands firmly holding the Mjolnir.

That was the elite wolf, the boss, the strongest among the others. One of which seemed calmer than the rest. Every step it took made the other Wolves fall silent. There was no escape. He knew this would be the end of his life.

The Elite Wolf snorted and approached him with slow steps. It stopped, staring at him with its red eyes. It bared its fangs and lunged towards him.

Ethan was completely still, his muscles tense, his mind blank, and his pulse racing. All his strength seemed to vanish suddenly.

'Is this the end for me?' he thought. 'What about Mom? What about Sierra?'

Ethan felt his life had been taken from him. There is no way he can escape from that many wolves.

He felt his life had been dull, but he much preferred it to his current predicament. He was not accustomed to physical activity, and even the smallest of scrapes was distressing to him.

Encountering snakes terrified him, let alone monsters. What could he do in this state?

“I had thought my life was worthless, but it appears that was not just an illusion.”

Ethan looked up and saw the massive Mutant Wolf looming before him. He wondered why they hadn't killed him yet. He wondered if they were trying to torture him slowly.

The Elite Wolf snorted again, and its eyes gleamed.

Ethan felt like every second was an eternity. Guilt bubbled up in his mind: "I hate my life!"

"If only I could do more!"

He had faith that he could remain resilient and persevere if he was willing to wait and accept his circumstances. He hadn't encountered many difficulties, but he only ever acted on minor matters, never contemplating the future.

He had a sudden epiphany, "I have been weak! I am worthless!"

Ethan wished he could do more and be stronger, but the burden of his pain weighed heavily on his heart. He had so much self-hatred that he felt incapable of saving himself. Screaming and crying seemed like the only way to express his misery, yet he had forgotten how.

"Sorry, Mom," he whispered. "I'm sorry, Sierra."

Ethan struggled to accept his impending death and felt helpless to do anything about it. He was perplexed as to how to process his situation.

He stood up and faced the Mutant Wolf, who was watching him as if it was ready to attack. He wanted to intimidate it and make it end his life, but its ferociousness made him reconsider his decision.

Had the System allowed him to reset his Stats Points and increase his Dexterity to its maximum, he would have been able to make his escape. He was accustomed to escaping difficult situations, as he found solace in avoiding conflict.

"Is this how it feels to have no way to run?"

"I believed I could keep running forever."

"I thought by gaining this power, I could run faster to escape my problems."

"So why did I end up here? Why can't I just run and escape?"

"What a failure I am!"

The Mutant Wolf in front of him howled, followed by the other. He heard shrill voices coming from all directions, like they were singing a death song.

'Goodbye World.' He muttered.

‘Stupid!!!’ Ethan's head jolted as he heard an unexpected voice, not from the air, but it seemed to come straight into his mind.

"Golem?" he thought.

"Stupid! Useless!" the voice said.

He experienced the same feeling he had when the Stone Golem had spoken to them before, but the voice he heard this time was different.

"Stupid! Why do I have to fall in the hands of a useless person like you!?" the voice added.

He thought to himself, 'Who's there?'

Ethan had stopped wielding his Hammer, but he soon regained his senses. Whenever the Hammer, which was now lying beside him, vibrated, he heard a voice in his mind.

He found it peculiar, yet who was he to judge in this situation? Anything could happen. “Are you Mjolnir?” he asked.
