Cheng Jin snapped out of his stupor after he was patted gently on the shoulder.

He lifted his gaze up to scrutinize the person who had patted him with a deadpan expression, and saw a sweet and charming woman exhibiting a professional smile. In a lukewarm tone, she said, “It’s already your turn, sir.”

Cheng Jin sprang up on his feet in alarm and trotted a couple eager steps. He then halted his pace again and spoke, “Thanks… Thank you for notifying me.”

“There’s no need to be polite.” The woman still retained her sweet smile, “What a courteous man.”

To hear such a compliment caused Cheng Jin’s face to burn a faint reddish tint. The woman extended her finger and pointed anew, saying, “Just enter through that door, there will be a staff member present inside who’ll handle all the procedures for you.”

“Alright, thank you.” Cheng Jin’s stride was somewhat irregular. The tip of his heart throbbed violently when he looked up and spotted the “Marriage Processing Office” signage. He took a deep breath and proceeded to walk inside.

The office was very spacious and its entirety was equipped with up-to-date equipment. Marriage applications could be quickly processed if you apply directly on the internet, so there were hardly any people present in the marriage area. Those who would come were there to file divorce.

Cheng Jin currently lived on a very large planet with well-developed scientific and technological advancements, clean air and a beautiful environment. It was specially designated as the “rich district” and tacitly known to the society as the “aristocratic bloodline’s” residence.

Here, there existed neither beggars nor poor people. If their assets were below a certain average and without a specially appointed title, they’d be exiled to other worse planets. Crimes didn’t exist here, since they would be incarcerated on another dark planet once they committed anything illegal.

It wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration to claim that this planet was simply the dream home of all humanity, it was an extremely fortunate thing to be able to live here.

This planet, however, also had its weakness, that is, compared to its vast geographical breadth, the number of humans dwelling on it was evidently quite lacking.

For this reason, the Supreme Court had promulgated a great deal of law for instance such as the single tax that unmarried people had to pay; obtaining a rather large incentive for marriage and childbirth once; getting three years worth of income if they have an only child; and if they had more than three children, the above mentioned would be able to enjoy various kinds of benefits without paying any taxes for life.

Nonetheless, the birthrate for newborns had still plummeted drastically every year. For this, some members of the Parliament proposed to recruit outstanding people from inferior planets and to repose the clause of the settlement rights a bit more, but it was met with a strong objection, so the proposal was left unsettled.

The government brainstormed a lot of gimmick in order to safeguard their birthrate. The requirement to attend personally when filing for a divorce in the divorce application office rather than applying online was among them.

After all, most people who wanted a divorce were rather hasty, and having a staff specially care for them may be able to redeem the hearts of those who were disappointed in their marriage.

When Cheng Jin walked in, there was already an older woman sitting inside, who seemed just as gentle. She glanced at him and smilingly greeted Cheng Jin, “Good morning, sir.” Then got up and poured him a glass of water.

Cheng Jin received it and sat down. He thanked her, then handed over his ID. Each person on the planet has his or her own exclusive ID. Once the ID was scanned on the machinery, all of Cheng Jin’s information would then appear on the screen.

The older woman’s face remained passive even when she saw that his title had a “Madam General”. She skimmed through all the information at a glance, and smiled afterwards, “You’re here to apply for the annulment of your marriage with your husband, General Lu Tao, aren’t you?”

Cheng Jin’s grip on the cup of water in his hands tightened as he gently acknowledged, “Yes.” Yet he couldn’t help but feel a pang in his chest.

She asked, “Can you please tell me the reason why you intend to annul your marriage?” She voiced, pushing a sign forward, “Although this is a matter of privacy, the law stipulated that I am obliged to ask clearly, and you must tell me in detail, otherwise your application may render invalid.”

Embedded inside the sign were the provisions of law printed out on paper and stamped with a red seal. Cheng Jin swept a glance, pursed his lips and remained silent for a moment before he answered, “He doesn’t have any feelings for me.”

The woman frowned slightly.

In fact, she was able to surmise this eventuality as early as she viewed Cheng Jin’s profile.

Cheng Jin had been married for seven years and remained at home, jobless, while his husband applied the very next day after their wedding to be deployed to a battlefield on a foreign planet, returning only once half a year later, just two days away from his second departure.

Since then, General Lu Tao had been commanding operations on various battlefields almost nonstop. In the span of seven years, he had stayed on the planet for only five months and three days, which definitely was a neglected figure for the newlyweds.

Furthermore, Cheng Jin also applied to accompany the army and received the government’s special authorization, only to be immediately sent back after he stayed with the general’s side for a day and a half.

Logically speaking, using these figures as reference would be enough to annul their marriage, and further persuasion was no longer necessary as it would only squander this gentleman before her’s youth and would cause him to miss the best childbearing period.

After the continuous human evolution, some men had even developed the ability to give birth. This ability could be detected after they were born, so the portion of these men could marry normal men. Presently, Cheng Jin was one of them.

The woman examined the young man before her. He possessed an excellent appearance, with well-defined features and snowy white skin that others preferred. But right now, his expression was laden with intense dejection; he was obviously trapped in love. She recalled again the hearsay surrounding General Lu Tao.

He was rumoured to be a hard-hearted man, close to a somewhat unreasonable character. But because of his innate combat prowess, from a measly ranked soldier, he managed to climb to a very high position in just a few years.

Countless men and women yearned for him, and there were scandals that revolved around him; his married status had casted a bit of a mysterious tint on him. Quite a good few wanted to unearth the real identity of his partner, but all arrived at a dead end.

At this very moment, his actual partner was unexpectedly sitting before her, wanting to dissolve the marriage that the world coveted.

The woman restrained herself, and inquired in a lax manner, “It appears to me that you still have deep feelings with the lord general. Have you not tried imploring some means to improve your relationship?”

“I had.” Cheng Jin sounded quite soft and a bit exhausted, “But he still hates me… No, not hate, but disgusted.” He exasperatedly revealed a helpless grin. With a very forced smile, he remembered all those “great efforts” he’d taken to coerce and seduce him; taking the initiative to express amicability, and even follow the former regardless of his own safety, but to no avail, the other not only looked at him coldly, there was even a trace of avoidance in his eyes.

The woman saw his expression and mentally sighed a bit. Her voice turned to a milder tone, “Perhaps you misunderstood. The lord general may be so by nature. If he truly had no feelings for you, perhaps he would’ve put forward the initiative to annul the marriage, but he didn’t come hereー”

“He will come tomorrow,” Cheng Jin interrupted her. His lips trembled slightly, and seemed to realize that he had lost his manners. He quickly drank a mouthful of water to gloss it over. The woman held a hint of surprise. She said, “Please give me a much more detailed explanation.”

“A month ago…” Cheng Jin shut his eyes, “He said that I should prepare.” He could still recall what his mood had been when he received the transmission at that time.

Lu Tao never took the initiative to contact him. If anything happened, he would only ask his secretary to contact him or send an email to inform him. It was the first time he initiated a communication request. At that moment, Cheng Jin had mixed feelings, both of surprise and delight; his hands shook as he clicked the accept button.

He saw Lu Tao’s handsome facial features emerging on the screen. For a brief moment, he almost wanted to cry. Before he felt touched, however, Lu Tao’s cold voice transmitted over, “I’ll be returning next month on the 23rd. When the time has arrived, you should prepare in advance, you’ll be following me somewhere.”

As she listened to Cheng Jin reiterating his story and looking at his flushed eyes, the woman felt distressed throughout. She said comfortingly, “Perhaps the lord general didn’t mean this place.”

“Where else could we possibly go?” Cheng Jin let out a bitter laugh, “I can’t think of anywhere else he’d ask me to go.” The lord general would socialize and have parties, but he had never brought him to attend, not even to family dinners.

“The quickest way to dissolve our marriage would only be done by both of us in this place. There’s no need to apply in advance, and no need to be reviewed repeatedly. It’ll be handled immediately as long as both parties press their thumbprints and sign their names. He’s always been a resolute man, he could do something like this.”

The older woman heard this and already realized that her persuasion wasn’t fruitful. Her eyes once more returned to the screen.

The recorded data in his ID profile was complete. There were only so many overlapping days the two parties had co-existed under the same roof that it could be seen clearly under the marriage column that they didn’t have a steady relationship, and even if the system were to judge it, the divorce application would easily pass, verification unnecessary.

In note of this, the older woman began to tap the keyboard and keyed in the data quite swiftly on the divorce application, but before she clicked the right key of the mouse, she further probed, “You really won’t reconsider it?”

Scanning the information on the screen over, she expessed, “I noticed that your asset balance already descended below the threshold. Although you haven’t opened a joint account with the lord general and you couldn’t use each other’s money, you could still stay on the planet even with below-the-average assets because you still hold the title of Madam General.

Once your marriage with the lord general has been invalidated, and your asset does not return above the average value within three months, you will be banished on this planet to go live on a more inferior planet.” She appeased so as kindly, “It’s everyone’s dream to live here. If you fall to an inferior planet, it will be extremely difficult for you to come return even if you wanted to.”

Cheng Jin was seized in terror when he heard this. Seeing the opportunity, the woman hurriedly said, “You might as well think about it again, or have a talk with the lord general. Perhaps the situation will take a turn for the better.”

Cheng Jin didn’t believe there would be any favourable turns. He had thought that instead of being torn apart by Lu Tao, he might as well take the initiative himself.

Maybe he could finally end up leaving a good impression in the other party’s heart, even if it’s just a little bit. However, when it really came down to it, he once again felt reluctant to leave.

By rendering their marriage null, he’d no longer be able to touch the other, and may not even have the chance to listen to the other party’s mocking remarks. He’ll be back today, perhaps he could give him time…

With this in mind, Cheng Jin rose up to leave and said, “I’ll consider it one more time. Thank you, I’ve troubled you.”

The woman lightly exhaled a relieved sigh and smiled, “Don’t mention it.”

Cheng Jin left, his pace still unhurried. He left the door of the marriage processing office as if he had spent all his strength. He raised his head and watched the azure-filled sky, heart cowering in fear when he recalled the environmental conditions of the inferior planets he had seen on TV.

The traffic moved back and fro, and the air was filled with miniature flight ships driving by. Cheng Jin, on the other hand, had no means of transportation.

He was about to go on foot when the communicator on his wrist rang. It was Fei Li, the secretary of his husband, Lu Tao. Cheng Jin hesitated for a bit before pressing the communicator. Fei Li’s voice came over after it connected, “Madam General, please allow me to inform you of the bad news. The general was invaded and attacked by the Zerg on his return trip and was critically injured. He has been currently admitted to the military headquarters hospital. The room number is…”

His first few sentences were the only thing that registered into Cheng Jin’s mind. When he heard him mention “critically injured”, a sudden surge of chill wrapped around his body, and his five senses were blocked. None of the following information from the other party had managed to pass his ears.
