Chapter 5 – Dungeon Attack

“Alright, next move.”

I picked up another pebble and threw it at the unsuspecting goblin. Naturally, it noticed my existence this time, and it began to run in my direction. The side street I was on had a straight path, and there was no one behind me.

Soon, the goblin came into view.

“Gugaaaa!”

With a shout full of animosity, it brandished its dagger and charged towards me. I fearlessly met the dagger with the [Killer Knife].

“Gya?! Gigigigi!”

With a desperate expression on its face, the goblin tried to pour in more strength to overpower me, but…

….Huh? Is this all it’s got?

It was so weak that it was almost like I was playing with a little kid. This was probably due to the benefits from the [Perfect Ring].

I can really do this!

Mustering all of my strength, I flicked the goblin’s dagger away and delivered a kick to its small head. Drool splattered out of the goblin’s mouth as it crashed into the wall and slid to the ground. I immediately walked up to the goblin and held my knife over its head.

“…It’s over.”

“…Phew. I managed to kill it.”

I didn’t feel any sympathy or regret because I had no choice but to kill it. If I had any feeling about it, I suppose it would be something along the lines of like, ‘well, I went and done it’. I could probably get used to it if I kept at it, but it still didn’t feel good.

I stared at the lifeless goblin for a while, and it eventually turned into particles of light and disappeared.

“I see. So after being defeated, they disappear.”

I opened my <Box> and checked something.

“…So it’s there after all.”

There were [Goblin Fangs] and a [Chipped Dagger] stored within. In fact, the <Shop> had a category for monster materials, and [Goblin Fangs] were already an item in there. That meant that I also had a means of obtaining them if need be. Since that was the case, I could also get them from defeating the monster itself.

I sold it right away because I didn’t need it.

“With this, I’ve managed to confirm a lot of things. All that’s left is… the dungeon, I guess.”

Although I mentioned dungeonization, it wasn’t certain whether it really was a dungeon or not. I wanted to make sure that this was the case.

I returned to the tragic scene of the house again and walked through the courtyard to the front door, trying not to look at the corpses as much as possible.

In the living room that led to the porch, I saw a goblin, which was probably the one I’d seen earlier. I hid and looked around first, but it seemed to be alone.

“…Hey.”

“Gigi? Giiiiiiii!”

When I spoke up, it noticed me and began to charge at me in a foolishly honest manner. Not very intelligent, it seems.

With the same approach, I met the dagger with my knife, warding off its attack and breaking its stance in the process. As the goblin stumbled back, I wrapped around to its backside and stabbed my knife through its chest from behind.

“Gugiiiiiiiiiiii?!!”

It painfully cried out its death throes as it fell forward, vanishing when it hit the floor.

―That makes two. How many more monsters are there?

The goblins were pretty weak, so I felt that there wouldn’t be any high-ranking monsters.

Well, if it was a typical RPG, that is.

I went into the living room and pricked up my ears.

Hearing a sound coming from the kitchen, I headed over and discovered a jelly-like object moving around in the sink. Upon checking it with the [Appraisal Looking-Glass], it identified the target as a slime.

As expected, slimes exist too…

It had the same rank as a goblin, and its weak point seemed to be the red core in the center of its body. I stabbed straight down with my knife, piercing the core of the unsuspecting slime. Just like that, the Slime melted away in the sink and disappeared.

“That makes three.”

There were no more sounds on the first floor. All that’s left is the second floor, huh…?

Without a doubt, I could already hear footsteps and the sound of movement coming from the second floor. Or are the residents still alive…?

I slowly climbed the stairs, making as little noise as possible. When I reached the top, I found that there were three rooms. There was no one in the hallway, so it seemed that there was someone in one of the rooms.

But in the next moment, I could hear footsteps in the corridor beneath the stairs. When I took a look, there was a goblin there, wandering around.

….What in the world? There were no signs of anyone being down there just a moment ago. I thought I had at least covered the entire ground floor. Did it come from outside…?

…No, this is a dungeon. If left alone, there’s always a chance that monsters could respawn.

In other words, if I left things as they were, a number of monsters corresponding to how many I had defeated would eventually respawn.

At least I had gained some good information from that. All that’s left is… how to clear this dungeon, I suppose.

I first checked the room where there was no sound. I almost screamed, but I covered my hand with my mouth and held it in.

The room was carpeted with blood, and there were chunks of flesh scattered all over the place. Among them, I could see a small leg and a hand belonging to a young child… and also the arm of an adult woman…

It was most likely what remained of a mother and child. The goblins killed them and ate most of their bodies.

How cruel…

But without a doubt, it was something that would occur in a building that had been turned into a dungeon.

Indeed, that included my high school as well.

I closed the door again as if nothing had happened in there.

I opened the other door, prepared for a scene similar to the one I just witnessed. And then―click.

I thought I had heard something like a switch being pressed, and, in the next moment, a small hole opened in the wall at the end of the hall, and an arrow flew out of it.

“Whoa?!”

I unintentionally let out a shout, but I was able to quickly duck and avoid the arrow.

―Shit!

Because I had let out a yell, something might come out of the other remaining unopened door. I immediately went into the room and closed the door behind me, holding my breath.

…..For now, nothing seemed to be approaching.
