Chapter 90: SS30 – Ezme – A Brave New World

Ezme let out a content sigh as the air flowed over her wings when she stretched them. After returning to the world of her last patrol to deliver the news of the demons’ arrival - and the corpse she had collected - she chose to go on another patrol tour.  

Not because she felt that it was strictly necessary at this point in time. After all, they already knew the demons were here, and the number of demons were likely not enough to warrant a permanent presence. The most that another patrol would achieve was to give them a guesstimate at when they could expect the demons to arrive in force, and how soon they would need to make routine patrols to clear them out. First always came a scouting party, that was followed by more - until they reached numbers where they couldn’t be considered scouts anymore, but raiding parties. 

But Ezme had another reason to take on the solitary task of patrolling; collecting her thoughts. Not just because of what had happened, but also since she suddenly felt free. Free - and afraid - to do what she thought was right. Although she knew what she wanted to do - namely helping the mortals in more ways than simply protecting them by fighting the demons directly - she wasn’t entirely sure how to go about it. 

I suppose that’s what it means to walk your own path. 

Though...that may not be the only reason.

Ezme reopened the system message she had received after several warnings when she confronted her sister.
