Chapter 24: The [ANGEL] becomes a Loli
Jack became conscious to the feel of wetness staining his face. Fluttering his eyes apart, he blinked as water dripped onto his head from a rocky crevice above. After wiping the pool of liquid off, he sat up and immediately took inventory of his surroundings.
He was in a massive slick cave of sorts. With a torrent of aquamarine foamy water gushing down on top of something large and red that was blocking the entrance leading out to the blue sky.
Jack shielded his eyes from the light and tried to assess why his body felt funny. He shifted his gaze and peeled away the shiny blue blanket that had been draped over him to reveal various patches of different colored burns and scars snaking along his arms and legs.
Panicking, Jack immediately pulled down the stretchy shorts on his half-baked body to see if his manhood was still intact.
"Oh thank God."
Jack let out a low chuckle before spotting a reflection of himself in a nearby puddle that made his breath catch in his throat.
The right half of his face was disfigured, with his hair singed almost cleanly on the side as if someone had shaved it. He touched his face and head, the texture of the burn scars smooth and unsettlingly different than what he was used to. He stared for a moment before bursting out into a laughing fit.
He was alive. He was actually alive.
Despite the extensive scarring he was still drawing breath and it felt strange, but also exhilarating knowing that he had won against such an oppressive foe and come out on top.
“Sahaqiel are you there?” Jack called out.
Suddenly a little girl wearing an oversized robe appeared in front of Jack, causing the boy to reel back in surprise.
"What?" The girl put her hands on her hips, looking comical in the white robe that was four sizes too big.
"Why… why are you so..." Jack paused for a moment, pondering to himself for a word that best described the now shortened Angel "Tiny?"
Sahaqiel's face suddenly twisted, her eyes widening as tears formed on her face.
"Because of you, you idiot!" The now loli yelled, throwing a fit as she lost her composure.
"Because of me? What did I even do?!"
"AH! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!" Sahaqiel clutched her robe, pulling it away from her chest and looking down at how wide the space was before looking back at Jack. "My boobs Jack! My boobs are gone!"
Sahaqiel cried with snot running down her nose as she approached him and collapsed into his lap. Despite being a spirit, Jack could feel as she smeared her tears and snot across his bare chest making him shudder in disgust.
"Give them back you bastard!" Sahaqiel screamed, smacking Jack's chest with both of her tiny hands.
Stunned, Jack merely hugged the little girl and let her weep, unsure of what to do as she kept muttering about her lost twin peaks.
After a few seconds of this the sudden sound of wet footsteps slapping against the cavern floor made Sahaqiel disappear and Jack snap his head around, where he came face to face with a familiar blonde woman he didn’t expect to see.
"Ah I see you're awake." Lieutenant Eleanor Belfusa said, unslinging her rifle and a leathery green bag filled with herbs and fruits onto the smooth cave floor. "Good."
The woman sat down on a nearby rock, undoing her blonde hair, and slicking it back as she took off her uniform jacket to reveal a black tank top underneath that was covered in sweat.
"What?" Lieutenant Belfusa asked, noting Jack's gaze.
"You're alive, how?" Jack asked, remembering the video footage from the command deck and the ensuing explosions that followed. A sudden thought occurred to Jack that maybe she was a spy or saboteur. After all, the nest of monsters, coupled with systems going haywire, and her being conveniently absent during the battle suddenly made Jack suspicious of the woman. If the Lieutenant was alive why hadn't she help them during the attack?
Jack didn't have an answer but he decided to thread carefully. After all, the woman did save his life.
"All thanks to the big guy over there." Eleanor said, pointing toward the red wall sticking out of the water. Suddenly it moved, shacking the ground as it revealed itself to be the Lieutenant's Mechframe, just heavily dented with scorch marks pocketing the machine with various areas of scraped paint.
"Good evening, Recruit Knight. I am a Guren-Class Mobile Engagement Chassis Frame. Designation Lovelace-Zero-One." The machine spoke suddenly, narrowing down to join the duo in their conversation.
"Ah, ah, ah. Go back to standby Lovelace, you're still in time out." The Lieutenant scolded the machine like a naughty puppy, forcing it to go back to its resting position underneath the falling water.
"Yes. Lieutenant." The hulking machine replied, despite its voice being neutral and robotic, Jack thought he detected a tinge of exasperation in the robot’s tone.
"Anyway, the explosion knocked me out, activating Lovelace's emergency protocols." The Lieutenant shook her head and clicked her tongue. "Since the deck was on fire and the Demonspawn were swarming. Lovelace in all its NEXT GEN AI programming! Decided to burn up all our flightwing fuel to escape."
"Protocol One: Protect the Pilot." The machine answered back, assuaging some of Jack's tension about the Lieutenant being a possible spy. "I was merely following my preset Protocols Lieutenant."
"Yeah Love, I know." Lieutenant Eleanor hung her head low and sighed. She then unsheathed a knife from her waist and began peeling a red circular fruit from a bag as she continued her story.
"Luckily I woke up in the middle of Lovelace fighting off hordes of Demonspawn to assume control and that's when I noticed your little light show with the Nest Guardian."
Jack tensed up, realizing that his secret was out of the bag. His jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed as several ideas began to run rampant in his mind. He eyed the serrated black blade in the woman’s palm and weighed his chances with taking her out if need be.
"You're a lot stronger than your paperwork made out." The Lieutenant vocalized in a low tone, her voice seeming exceptionally sinister as she ate a slice of the red fruit before stabbing a piece and offering it to Jack. He refused, unsure what his next actions should be.
"Come on Jack, you should eat. Judging from how you're covered in burns, your body doesn't have enough energy to repair itself."
He was about to say no again, but his stomach growled, making the choice for him.
Jack slowly and carefully plucked the fruit off of the outstretched knife as the woman stared at him with narrow eyes.
He bit down on the fruit, with neither breaking eye contact as juicy sweetness filled his mouth. The fruit was tart, but good. Leaving a little tangy feeling on his tongue as he quickly devoured it. Jack suddenly leapt up, snatching the fruit from the Lieutenant's hands and rabidly devouring the rest, skin and all. He thought he heard a small chuckle from the woman but when he turned she was just staring at him.
“Sorry. I-”
“Don’t worry about it. Mi’shka is the same way.”
Jack thought he detected a hint of a smile on the woman’s face but it faded quickly as she fished out another red fruit and tossed it to the ravenous boy.
“How is he?”

“Who?” Jack asked, catching the red fruit with his teeth and chomping down.
“Blood Silver.”
“I… I uh, don’t know to be honest. Last I saw he was fighting some kind of massive creature with lots of eyeballs on its chest and I was too busy running to-.” Jack trailed off as the events leading up to his big showdown with the Nest Guardian and the image of his sister screaming his name played in his mind. “Jill!”
Jack turned, his heart rate escalating as he immediately bolted toward the cave’s exit.
“Stop!” Lieutenant Belfusa barked, putting an arm out and catching the teen as he tried to leave. “We can’t move yet, there’s too many demonspawn around and you aren’t fit for combat. Not with your body like this!”
“I have to get back to the ship! I need to see if my sister is ok!”
“Not like this you won’t!”
“Let me go Lieutenant, we have to get back to the ship!”
“The Landship is gone!” The woman screamed out, silencing the boy.
Jack’s heart skipped a beat at the news as his stomach nearly fell to the floor. He stumbled catching himself by hitting the slick cavern wall and sliding down as a tsunami of emotion overwhelmed him. Sahaqiel appeared, hugging Jack as he lurched over and began to silently weep.
No, no, no, no, no. Please!
Seeing the distraught look on the teen’s face Lieutenant Belfusa made an ah sound before quickly clarifying her statement. “I mean they took off, they’re far away from us now. Not that they’re dead.”
Jack looked up and breathed a massive sigh of relief, chuckling to himself at the misunderstanding.
“I didn’t mean to mislead you.”
“Ha, no, It's my fault for misunderstanding.” Jack plucked at his burned skin anxiously, hanging his head low for a moment before looking up at the Lieutenant who was eyeing him up and down.
“So what do we do now?”
Lieutenant Belfusa blinked in response before turning away from the teen. “WE aren't going to be doing anything. Not until you recover enough to fight. Until then you are going to sit here and help sort this bag of plants and watch the cave while I’m away.”
The woman picked up and tossed the leathery bag filled with herbs at the teen, causing him to gawk before he dumped the bag to the side and stood up getting face to face with the officer.
“I can fight! I’m ready, whatever you need me to do to get me to my sister I’m ready!” Jack yelled, his eyes alight with determination as his fist clenched.
“Try activating your system.”
“What?”
“Do it. Activate your system.”
Jack humored the woman and looked off to the side, attempting to pull up his system, yet surprisingly when he did all he was met with was a giant-
[ERROR!503]
“Wha-” Jack stammered out, confused and suddenly scared that he had lost access to his system. In a panic he tried several more times, over and over again yet the same error message kept displaying on his system. Grasping at straws Jack stretched a hand out, attempting to activate wind blade by visualizing the familiar trigger. Yet nothing happened, sending Jack into a panic as he realized he had lost what made him special. “No…No, no, NO, no, no, no! I’m her big brother and I’m supposed to protect her. I need my system to get back to Jill! I can’t- I can’t-I-”
“Relax Jack, relax. It's only temporary.” Lieutenant Belfusa urged in a calming voice, placing a hand on the teen to try and steady him. “Once you recover, your system will come back and when it does we’ll leave first thing. I promise. BUT! Until then-” The woman reached down and grabbed the spilled bag of herbs and fruits. “-You are going to channel all of that rage and energy into sorting these fruits and resting.”
Jack grabbed the bag as the Lieutenant thrusted it into his chest.
”You understand private?”
“Ah. Yes ma’am.” Jack replied, absentmindedly clutching the bag as Sahaqiel stood to the side and nodded at him.
“Ok.” The officer turned and left toward the exit, picking up her rifle in the process. “I’m going to grab our dinner for tonight. Lovelace will be here to protect you, but under NO circumstances will you leave the cave, even if I don’t show up. Demonspawn are especially attracted to Awakened and won’t hesitate to maul you to death, do you understand?”
“Yea, yea I do.” Jack replied, accepting the reality of the situation and realizing he’d just have to hurry up and wait.
“Good.” Lieutenant Belfusa pursed her lips and nodded slightly before turning and exiting the cave, leaving Jack alone with a bag of assorted fruits, a giant dented mech in time-out, and a ghostly little girl in an oversized robe that was trying to steal his red fruits.
