Chapter 27: [ANGEL] Unlocks The System.

When Jack woke, he was surprised to see the hulking Lovelace gone with Lieutenant Belfusa nowhere to be found. For a moment he inwardly panicked thinking that the woman had left without him, but then he spotted it. A note pinned to the wall with a knife and a flare gun dangling from the handle.

Went Jogging. In case of Emergency (>0.0)>

Jack eyed the black serrated blade in his hands before looking down at his trucks and realizing he had nowhere to stash the knife.

"How useful would a storage device be right now?"

[Very. Anyway, we've got business to get to Jackie, Unlocking your system now.]

Jack felt a jolt in the back of his head at Sahaqiel's words, reinforcing that the deed had been done.

Wasting no time, he went to the back of the cavern, where he hid himself behind a rock formation that jutted out in the back where Eleanor and Jack did their business and pulled up his system.

Upon gazing at the transparent blue screen, Jack took note of several changes as well as new features he hadn't had a chance to explore such as affinities, job list, and levels. There was also the issue of his free points which he was eager to spend and test out.

"Lots of new stuff here Sara.” Jack whistled.

The little Angel appeared in front of Jack, but this time instead of being a short little loli her body was now that of a petite teenager. A clear sign she was recovering.

"Due to your abysmally low magical potential you weren't even level one so most of the features were locked or hidden. BUT, since you killed that Nest Guardian the system elevated your status, unlocking other features and finally bringing you up a few levels."

“So, will all these question marks fade away once I get stronger and defeat other foes?”

“Correct. At least that’s the plan anyway. Eve created the system so that it wouldn’t flood the users with too much information all at once.” Sahaqiel explained, hopping around Jack in some weird dance.

"I see." Jack narrowed his eyes, focusing on the [View List][!] Icon next to class. "First thing first in any video game is to pick a starting class right? Then choose a dump stat? Uh, should I be worried about this Soul Overload debuff?"

Jack furrowed his brow, turning to the Angel.

"Yes and no. Once you’ve chosen a class that can boost your Arcana, we’ll start the evolution process. After that happens, the debilitation should go away. I've already taken the liberty of redacting the classes that wouldn't be useful for forcing an evolution.” Sahaqiel said before hopping into the air where she got stuck then turned and winked at the teen.

Before he could fully shake his head, a transparent blue list overlapped in front of his system, drawing his attention from the now lazily floating Angel.

This… is certainly a lot to take in. Jack thought to himself as he stared at the list of starting classes available to him and their descriptions. He made a mental note of the Ruler class, but kept going, ignoring the ominous message next to the error.

As he continued, he could feel a tinge of embarrassment when he began reading the Stormdancer’s description.

“Well, aren't you famous miss Storm Dancer.” Jack teased, causing the floating angel to ball up in embarrassment.

Eve modeled the class after me! I didn’t have any input on the descriptions or title for that matter!” Sahaqiel protested, waving Jack away as he playfully batted her floating body around like an inflated balloon.

“Just pick something!”

"Hmmm I'd pick the ruler one just for the stat gains alone, but what’s with this message? Is this really that special?”

“I don’t know. Gehenna was a place that existed, but it was never ruled over by one entity. I don’t know why Eve would create a class designated as a ruler to it. I recognize and understand what everything else is, but not this. Sorry Jack, I would have removed it but the system wouldn't let me. I think we should skip it just to be safe.” Sahaqiel said but there was a slight wobble in her voice, as if she were afraid. Jack had a sneaking suspicion that she wasn’t being forthcoming about something but he couldn't piece it together.

“Man this is a tough choice.” Most of the classes seemed really cool, and the stat increases were very appetizing, however despite the error message and warning from Sahaqiel, Jack relied heavily on the Gasp of Gehenna and would probably use it often. Especially since it seemed to be upgradable and acted as a second mana storage. For him it was a no brainier, the class had the highest bonus stats and from what he could see there weren't any downsides.

“Well, what's the worse that can happen.” Jack muttered to himself before selecting the Ruler of Gehenna.

Once he made the selection a surge of electrifying energy rushed into his body all at once, snapping him awake. His muscles contracted, suddenly feeling tighter and more dense, yet his body felt light at the same time. Suddenly the sound of the waterfall seemed noisier than usual and colors appeared more vibrant.

Pulling up his system Jack smirked as he watched the numbers shift, but sadly, he was still suffering from the Soul Overload debuff.

[Class selected. ERROR! Please pick a path.]

[~W HO ARE YØÛ TO PÒSÊSS THÉ KËY?~]

What? Before Jack could fully process the ominous message, several alerts appeared in front of him.

The system updated in a flash of color, swapping from the transparent blue to a deep blood-red, surprising both Sahaqiel and Jack. Despite his class slot already being filled, the system was directing him to choose a second one.

"Errr. That's definitely not supposed to happen right?"

"No. It's not. Try selecting another class and see from there?"

"Did you see that message before the system spasmed out?"

"What message?"

Jack was alarmed, but kept it to himself. Something was going on, and either Sahaqiel was playing dumb or she didn't really know or see the message.

Reading the descriptions again, Jack chose Soul Weaver, his second pick. The class that seemed like it could cure Jill, but once selecting it he was met with the same error message again from the system. However this time Mender was added beneath the Ruler class.

Jack's body pulsed with energy in response to his choice and his system changed to reflect his added new skills and stats.

"Unexpected but not unwelcome! Pick another class!" Sahaqiel excitedly exclaimed, cupping her face as she gazed over his shoulder.

He didn't need to be told twice, free points were free points. Plus, he could feel himself getting stronger and he didn't mind gaming the system.

Jack went to make another selection but his body tensed up, sending an electric shock coursing through his body that made him and the angel scream in unison.

Sahaqiel crashed to the ground, convulsing in agony as Jack clutched his head. His brain was on fire. Like someone lit a match directly underneath the base of his skull.

Without warning, Sahaqiel disappeared, vanishing into a glitter of white sparkling lights.

"Sara? Sara!" Jack called out in a panic after finally recovering.

Suddenly his screen updated with Wind Mage as his third class but no new stat upgrades. However he did gain new skills.

[That hurt.]

"What the hell was that?!"

"I don't know." Sahaqiel said, materializing in front of Jack again but this time back in her Loli form. "Oh come on!"

"That really hurt." Jack grumbled scratching the back of his head.

"I'll be stuck like this forever!"

After calming down and collecting themselves, Jack reviewed the system, wondering why it defaulted to Wind Mage. However after seeing how Sahaqiel was affected by the system, he concluded that it must have had something to do with his triple core issue.

"With the classes selected do I have enough Mana to start the evolution process now?"

"Sadly no,"

Before Jack could get angry with the Loli, she quickly tacked on the solution at the end of her sentence.

"Wait seriously?! I have to use all my free points?!"

"Forcing an evolution requires an abundance of Mana. I knew you wouldn't be happy with it, but hey you got three classes in return. Surely you can't complain."

Jack groaned.

After a few moments passed, Jack reluctantly dumped all his free points into Arcana. With every tick he added, Jack could feel something swirling in his chest like a bubble threatening to pop. He struggled for a moment to breathe, but then the sensation suddenly disappeared, allowing Jack to intake air comfortably again.

"Alright, done. So what now?"

"Now this is where I come in. Just sit down and I'll take care of everything Jackie." Sahaqiel answered, picking up her oversized toga and sitting down in front of Jack. "Oh and find something to bite down on."

"What?"

"Find something to bite on, I'm serious."

Jack got up and found a stick, taking the knife the Lieutenant Eleanor had given him and scraped it along the piece of wood like the officer had taught him. Once it was a smooth bar, Jack rinsed it and went back to the end of the cave with the stick now in his mouth.

"Ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be." Jack murmured right before his entire body exploded.
