Chapter 29: [ANGEL] Spilled the Beans
"What. The hell is going on?" Jack groaned as he woke up yet again with his muscles aching and his entire world shaking. Wind blew into his face, making it hard to open his eyes as he felt himself being crushed.
"Rise and shine sleepy head, you awake now?" The voice of Lieutenant Eleanor called out as Jack realized he was being held like a stick in Lovelace's metal hand.
"What's going on?!" Jack demanded, gritting his teeth at the sight of Sahaqiel sitting on top of the Mech’s shoulder as it blitzed through the woods. "Where are we?!"
"You experienced some complications during the transformation. Everything is fine now. Just don't freak out." Sahaqiel explained looking down at the teen in her adult form. "You've been out for a few days."
"What?! What do you mean I've been out for a few days?!" Jack unintentionally yelled out loud, causing him to go wide-eyed as a voice crackled through speakers situated on the Mechframe.
"Who are you talking to Jack?" Eleanor's voice asked.
Jack froze up, attempting to formulate a response before noticing the sly smile from Sahaqiel that told him all he needed to know.
"She knows."
"She knows"
Sahaqiel and Jack said simultaneously.
"Why'd you tell him? I wanted to hear what kind of excuse he'd make." Eleanor added, making Jack realize that Sahaqiel had made herself visible to the pilot.
"You told her?"
"A condition of enlisting my help instead of killing you when you attacked me." Eleanor interjected before the Angel could offer an explanation.
"What? I did what?!"
"You went all rabid-cannibal on me, even put a couple of dents in Lovelace."
Jack’s gaze shifted to the fist-sized dents pocketing the hull, with his gaze especially fixated on a spot that looked like a human bite mark.
"I...did that?"
"Yeah and if you ever do it again I'll be using your body as a shovel to dig your grave before burying you headfirst." Lovelace's grip tightened around Jack at the officer's threat.
"Ow! Hey! I’m sorry! I'm still trying to process what happened!" Jack protested as the machine seemed to want to crush him.
"You suffered from Mana withdrawal." Sahaqiel butted in, offering an explanation to Jack's confusion. "The sudden expansion of Mana capacity and transformation caused an imbalance that your body tried to fill. Thanks to the Lieutenant here keeping you restrained for the last few days, your body finally returned to normal."
"Normal?" Jack echoed as he pulled up his system, trying to get a clear grasp of where he was and what changes he'd undergone since he was last conscious.

Jack was amazed by the changes, but before he could get a clear read of all his new skills he was suddenly released from Lovelace's grasp.
"Hey! A little warning or something jeez!" Jack exclaimed as he dusted himself off of the forest floor and began admiring his bodily changes. He was a whole head taller, with a lot more muscle mass, and ease of movement. Yet despite his increased body mass he felt light, incredibly so, as if at any moment a strong gust of wind would carry him off.

Suddenly the Mech's cockpit opened, with Eleanor leaning out with her hand extended. "Get in."
Jack did a double take. "What?"
"Get in, now!" Eleanor barked.
Hearing the urgent tone of her voice, Jack rushed and grabbed hold of the officer's hand where she began pulling him into her cockpit.
"Uh, where… uh, where do I sit?" Jack stammered out while taking in the lack of extra seats within the black-grey interior.
"On my lap, sit." Eleanor ordered, pushing the teen down on her thigh and hugging the boy against her warm body as she grabbed the controls and the cabin sealed up around them.
This isn't awkward at all.
[Only as awkward as you make it]
"Lieutenant, I'm detecting Multiple D-class trailing behind us. Six total, twenty meters out and closing." Lovelace's voice echoed through the cabin.
"I see them on the motion sensors, Love. They're fast, let's deal with them first before moving on."
“Understood.”
With a groan of metal moving, Jack's stomach immediately plummeted as the Mechframe spun around without warning. He could feel the vibrations from Lovelace's steps traveling into the cockpit causing him motion sickness as the metal box began wobbling violently from side to side.
Suddenly Jack flew into what little space existed in the cockpit, slamming his face onto several panels and instruments that caused Lovelace to shudder.
"Hey! Cut that out!" Eleanor yelled as her eyes darting around in her helmet, apparently tracking or looking at something that seemed to be moving very quickly.
"It's not my fault!" Jack complained as he clutched his throbbing nose. "there's no freaking seatbelts in here!
"Then just hold on to me then!" Eleanor yelled as the mechframe shifted again, causing Jack to headbutt the woman's helmet. "Seriously! I'm trying to pilot! Just hold on to something or I'm kicking you out!"
Jack wasted no time and did as he was told, draping his arms around the woman to try and keep himself in place.
Lovelace bounced around rapidly, with Jack wondering how Pilots tolerated being inside one of these deathtraps as something seemed to violently collide with their bipedal machine.
"Hey Lieutenant! What do we do if we have to escape?" Jack asked as he placed his foot against the roof of the cockpit to stabilize himself.
"Aim for the nearest bush."
Jack couldn't tell if she was being serious or kidding. But whatever the case his life seemed to rest in her hands.
"Shouldn't I get out and fight?"
"We're trying to escape, not hamper ourselves." Eleanor retorted as her helmet let out a series of green-lit chirps before Lovelace’s voice flooded the interior.
"All threats eliminated. Nice work Lieutenant."
"Plus we don't need your help," Eleanor added as the cockpit opened and she kicked Jack out, causing the latter to sprawl to the forest floor where he came face to face to the scene of several dead hounds and decapitated trees.
"Ow! What gives?! You said hold on to something! It's not my fault I touched your chest!"
"Climb topside, we need to move." The lieutenant said, ignoring the teen's outcry and tossing a bundle of belts at Jack in response.
"What's this?"
"Captain Domino's Roche gear." Lieutenant Eleanor explained. "It tethers the user via Mana and connects to the rune plate attached to the back of Lovelace. Get hooked up."
"I'm sorry what?"
Lieutenant Belfusa pointed to the top of her Mech.
"It'll keep you from falling off while you're up there, but on the off chance you need to disembark, you can hit that green button over the chest to recall back to Lovelace. It'll yank you back like a rope, and if you press that red button above the green it'll activate the float system, allowing you to levitate. Press them both if you're ground level."
Great... more riding.
"Cool, cool, so like, can't you just carry me in your palms or something?" Jack asked, dreading having to ride on top of the death machine and his motion sickness. In response to his question, Eleanor sealed the cockpit with the crimson machine suddenly taking off.
"What? Hey! Where are you-WHOA!"
Suddenly he was yanked from the ground, flying into the air behind the massive mech in a sprawl of flailing limbs. Jack hit the ground, dragging behind the machine as it took off in a full sprint through the woods with the teen's bare body being coated in dirt.
"Wait wait wait wait wait wait, Slow down! Please!" Jack screamed as he dangled behind the Mechframe. Remembering what Eleanor said about the harness, Jack quickly hit the buttons on his chest, sending him out of the mud and rocketing him towards the Mech where he connected to its back with a loud click and an "Oof" from the force of having the air knocked out of him.
Eyeing the hooks and bars the Lieutenant mentioned, Jack grabbed hold of a thin metal bar jutting from the back of the mech to stabilize himself before he shut his eyes.
He couldn't see how anyone could stomach piloting a Mechframe, let alone riding on top of one. His stomach felt like it was going to climb out his throat, making Jack extremely uncomfortable as the bipedal machine zigzagged through the forest landscape.
"Where are we going?!" Jack yelled, banging on the top of the hull as he held on for dear life.
"Relay station just a day away. We can link up with the support personnel there and radio for help, letting them know we're alive. In the meantime, I need you to do something, Jack. Can you do something for me?"
Uh Oh.
"Uh, yea sure. What's up?"
"You see that compartment with a biometric scanner on the hatch?"
"Yea, yea I think I see it." Jack replied as he eyed a little locked box with a green hand scanner on top of it.
"Good, I'm unlocking it. Reach in and grab a gun from inside."
"What?" Before Jack could get an explanation, the hatch opened up with a hiss, revealing a multitude of weapons situated on a shiny black metal rack and dozens of magazines.
"I don't know what kind of skills you possess, but I need you to start shooting the Demonspawn that are chasing us." At the Lieutenant's words, Jack looked behind him to see dozens of low-flying demons, coupled with a tidal wave of familiar tiny black triangles rushing in their direction out of the tree line.
"Oh c'mon! Can't I catch a break?!" Jack screamed in frustration as he eyed the sight before grabbing one of the rifles from the compartment. Then he froze, realizing he didn't know how to use the gun. "Uh, bad timing but how exactly do I shoot if I can't turn to face them? Plus I've never used a rifle before!"
Jack couldn't see it but he could feel Lieutenant Belfusa letting off a sigh before she instructed him to hit a button on the side of the hull near the compartment.
Suddenly he unlatched from the Mech, but didn’t go far as several lines of energy snapped to life off the hull, tethering him to the machine with thin lines of energy that gave him just enough space to stand up and stabilize his footing on the crimson hull.
Oh, neat.
"It's a smart weapon, just pull the trigger in the direction of what you want to kill. The ammunition will auto-adjust as long as it's at least close to its target. When you need to reload just hit the button above the trigger to release the magazine and grab a new one then rack the bolt."
"Alright! Got it!" Jack replied as the moment he lifted the rifle a targeting panel sprung up from the side of the weapon. " Uh, what should I do with the magazines when I'm done?"
"Seriously Jack?! Just toss them or throw them at the enemy for all I care!"
"I'm just asking!" Jack yelled back as he squeezed the trigger, aiming for the clump of leathery bats flying low toward them but missed completely as the recoil threw the weapon's barrel high up.
"What the-!"
"Shoulder the weapon, and give it a firm grip! Don't worry about it breaking, it's made for tougher folks than you to handle." Eleanor interjected, apparently conscious of the fact Jack missed.
Jack clicked his teeth at that last bit before giving it another go. Gripping the weapon firmly, Jack put all his strength into firing the gun. He pulled the trigger, letting out a burst of gunfire that hit his target squarely, causing the leathery creature to screech as it toppled to the ground.
“Hey! I got one! Lieutenant, I got one!”
“That's nice Jack! Really! But I’m reading several dozen, close to two-hundred bogies closing on our tail. Keep shooting until the ammo stops or I tell you to otherwise!” Eleanor urgently ordered as the group broke free from canopy of trees and entered into a spacious field of green.
Jack paused, taking in the majestic scenery of the wide green landscape and open sky. He’d never seen so much flat grass in his entire life.
[Jack! Focus! Lots of demonspawn!}
At Sahaqiels warning, Jack snapped back from his hypnosis, only to see what looked to be an endless army of horrific abominations bumbling out of the woods towards them. Eleanor had lied! There weren't dozens, there were thousands of them!
Jack’s jaw hung agape as he gazed upon the scene before recovering enough to laugh at the absurdity of the situation he found himself in.
"Hey! What's going on? Why are you laughing? Why aren't you shooting?!" Eleanor call out as Jack's laughter began to intensify.
“I CAN'T CATCH A BREAK CAN I?! I JUST WANT TO GIVE MY SISTER A BETTER LIFE YOU BASTARDS!” Jack screamed, pointing the barrel of his new toy at the oncoming horde before squeezing the trigger.
