Chapter 17: Rushing tO the Hanger
Jack was in a full sprint, running through the halls of the landship as fire and smoke clouded his vision. Along the way he raced past people injured, dying, and crying out for help but he couldn't slow down, not until he found Jill. Suddenly a doorway he was about to run through closed shut, blocking his path.
"Damn it! Open up! Open up!" Jack screamed, attempting to pry the bulkhead open with his bare hands. There was a searing sound as he pressed his hands on the metal but he ignored it, every bit of his attention focused on the obstacle in front of him.
"Stand back!" A voice from behind yelled. Turning, Jack could see Leon's eyes alight with power as the red-head conjured a strange ephemeral energy in his hands. Jack didn't need to be told twice, he dodged to the side just as the blast of condensed green energy ripped through the metal door, carving a path through the fire and flames.
Jack wasted no time and ran through, with Leon following closely behind. He was grateful for the young Awakened's help, without which, he wouldn't have made it down the first floor let alone the debris and bulkheads in the subsequent hallways.
Moments earlier, upon hearing Jack's screech of panic, the youth had volunteered to help Jack find his sister. Despite the Captain’s orders to remain seated, the pair were now rushing towards the hangar.
"Another door!" Jack cried seeing another closing bulkhead.
"On it!" Leon sent another blast of energy, punching through the reinforced metal as if it were paper.
Jack leapt through, nearly having his head removed as a piece of debris fell from above, but a quick wind blade from his hand cut the bar before it could impact him.
Pulling up his system Jack eyed his mana. He didn't have much to work with, at most he could do three more wind blades or three dashes before he was all out of options, but at least with Leon here he could make it provided they had enough Mana.
Jack soared down several flights of stairs, almost tripping in the process if not for Leon catching him at the last second.
"Thanks."
Leon nodded in response. "Don't mention it, let's find your sister."
After prying the door open, Jack and Leon entered the launch bay, where they were surprised to see most of the flames were gone with some kind of foam coating the hanger.
“Jill!” Jack cried out, pinching his nose as he scanned the hanger and resisted the urge to sneeze.
“Jack! There’s a body over here.” Leon beckoned, crouching down over what appeared to be the remains of a corpse covered in foam. Jack nearly had a heart attack as he eyed what looked to be the body of a small woman, but fortunately, the tattered remains of a uniform and strands of blonde hair told him it wasn’t Jill.
No longer concerned, Jack peeled his eyes away from the stranger and continued his search.
"Jill!" Jack called out for his sister, frantically scurrying up and down the hanger as he looked desperately for any signs of life. Of all times for Sahaqiel to not show herself this was the worst. If she were here he could probably send her to look for his sister.
"Over here!"
Jack immediately shot off in the direction of the unfamiliar voice, hopping over Jill's broken wheelchair in the process.
Steeling themselves, Jack and Leon rounded a corner into a hanger, where a visible trail of blood led beneath a pile of rubble that made Jack's blood run cold.
"No-no-no-no," Jack muttered, his heartbeat beating in his ears as he frantically tore at the rubble at such a rapid pace he began slicing his hands against the debris. Yet despite the sting in his hands Jack kept going until there was a large piece of metal paneling he couldn't remove by himself.
"Le-"
"Already on it." Leon said, moving over to help shift the scorched marked panel
With Leon's help, Jack managed to lift the metal debri away that revealed a man drenched in blood, impaled by a large spike in his back. Jack recoiled at the sight of Mi'shka's body but he recovered quickly when he noticed the man lying on top of a conscious woman who was clutching a little green-haired girl closely.
"Jillian!" Jack cried, rolling the still-warm corpse out of the way and snatching his sister out of the woman's arms.
Jill was drenched in blood, but thankfully there seemed to be no visible injuries on the little girl as Jack laid his sister down and pressed his head against her chest, hoping for any signs of life.

Jack half-choked a sigh of relief as he felt the little girl's rhythmic breathing.
"She's alive. She's alive." Jack murmured to himself, blinking away his budding tears and looking over at the man who had given his life for Jill.
"Thank you." Jack offered the corpse, wishing he hadn't been so distrustful of the man as he stared at the Mi’shka’s unblinking dead eyes.
"You're quite welcome."
Jack went wide-eyed as the light in Mi'shka's eyes returned and his eyelids began rapidly shutting and closing.
"Ugh. I hate this part." Mi'shka groaned.
Suddenly the blood from the nearby area began moving, snaking its way toward the officer who started grinning like a madman as he stood up like a blood-soaked revenant rising from undeath.
Jack watched with mouth agape as the blood covering Jill, peeled itself off and floated in particles towards the Captain. He couldn't help but be in awe even as the man began stumbling around awkwardly trying to reach for the shard of debri stuck in his back.
"A little help please! Or are we going to just stand gawking at my magnificent splendor?"
Leon immediately went over and ripped the metallic spike out of the Captain's back, causing a tearing sound that made Jack cringe.
"Gentle! It still hurts you know! Ugh, I literally just washed this uniform!"
"You're alive!? But you were just dead!"
"Sorry to disappoint. I was only passed out. Using my blood abilities takes quite a bit out of me when everything around you suddenly starts going boom." Captain Mi'shka replied, ripping off the tattered remains of his uniform to reveal a muscular body that was decorated by dozens of cuts and bruises that were already beginning to heal.
"We need to get to the bridge Captain, figure out what's going on. The fire suppression system kicked in so it should be safe to go back now." The female tech interjected as Leon propped her up.
"The Corporal is right. We have to convene with the bridge to figure out what the bloody blazes just happened." Mi'shka stopped, his jolly demeanor morphing to one of seriousness. "Where's Eleanor?"
Jack shared a quick glance with Leon, both recounting the events shown on the hologram before the explosions broke out.
“I need to get Jill back to her pod, then get a doctor to look at her,” Jack said, not wanting to break the news to the worried Captain.
“Your sister is fine, she was on the verge of freaking out while I was bleeding out, so I put her to sleep momentarily. Should wear off shortly.”
“You did what?!” Jack snarled, regretting allowing the man to watch his sister.
“We aren’t sure, Captain,” Leon interjected, attempting to defuse Jack's angry glare by carrying the technician past Jack and urging him to follow suit. "We need to move."
Jack gingerly held his sister and began carrying her away, but before he could reach the metal entrance leading out of the runway, an ominous sense of dread washed over him.
Jack’s skin crawled, like a thousand tiny little pins stabbing into his skin all at once. Something was watching him, observing him. Like hundreds of eyes on him all at once. Jack couldn’t quite put his finger on it, it was like a primal urge, he just knew it was coming and whatever it was, it was getting closer and rapidly too.
He wasn’t the only one to feel this way, judging from the statue-like state of Mi’shka, and Leon they had felt something similar drawing an inquisitive look on from the female technician.
“What’s going on? Is everything ok?”
The trio turned and looked into the air, where the moonlight beaming into the hanger bay illuminated something soaring in the air. It was thin and small, and it appeared to be getting closer with hundreds of others following loosely behind it.
Captain Mi’shka was the first to break free from the trance. He clapped his hands, spilling blood everywhere, as he rushed towards the incoming objects where he stopped and flung his hands into the air, sending multiple globs of blood flying. The droplets connected with each other, creating a dome of crimson above the survivors just in time to catch the hail of what Jack now realized were bone-white projectiles.
Before Jack could process what was happening, Mi’shka’s head snapped towards him and the other stunned survivors.
“RUN!”
