In the snow storm, all the people and animals were huddled in their houses or safe spaces. Few unlucky walkers were stranded in the merciless snow storm, their vision blinded and body on the verge of giving up. When luck favored them, they would find a warm, cozy hut and ask the dwellers for shelter. The house owners were usually kind, and they would gladly take in the pitiful souls, who were hungry and cold, hanging on to their lives with the hope to tide out the storm. Poor things.

These walkers included runaways, loners, stragglers, novice merchants, monks and travelers.

So when Miranda got trapped in the deadly avalanche of snow, she had only one goal- find a warm house and beg for food and shelter. In fact, she did eventually found a little hut in the shade of a huge cliff-like structure, that protected it’s slanting roof from the barrage of thick snow from the sky. The chimney let out dark fumes. Fire lights fogged up the windows.

Miranda was beyond relieved. She rushed to it’s doorstep and knocked at the door with an urgency that was startling. She felt a century must have passed as she waited  for the owner to open the door. It was like they took forever to open the door.

When the door finally opened, the first thing that caught her attention was the blast of warm wind that swarmed over her. Before she could sigh in comfort, a gigantic man came into her focus.

Her eyes hardly reached his chest. When Miranda thought she would strain her neck if she continued bending her neck, she finally saw his face- a face covered in thick, short beard and framed by long, brown hair.  She felt his eyes looked extra mean. Mean grey eyes.

“What do you want?”, the man barked, or so Miranda thought. Miranda had the urge to roll her eyes at the question but stopped considering he didn’t exactly looked friendly. Her chances of survival depended on this man, she couldn’t screw it up.

She reasoned with herself, maybe he usually spoke this way. Maybe his voice was naturally this deep. She prayed he wasn’t annoyed to see a barely legal girl turning up at his door so late at night in the middle of a snow storm.

“Umm… Hello. I’m Miranda. I am stuck in this snow storm with no place to go. Would you be kind enough to give me food and shelter to tide out the storm, please?”

The man just stared at her with those narrow eyes until she felt herself squirming under his scrutiny.

‘Damn- I’m getting antsy while freezing to death out here and this man is zoning out while standing in the comfort of his warm house. So unfair!’

“Ok. You can come in. Hang your coat at the hook near the entrance.”

“And leave those boots at the shoe rack. Don’t walk all over my carpet with those dirty boots.”

“Oh, okay. No problem…. will do that.” She was slightly thrown off guard. Berating herself for forgetting, she added at the end, “And thanks mister!”

‘Weird men have weird carpet rules. Got it.’

Letting her in, he closed the hut’s door and observed her as she unlaced her boots and took them off. Miranda could feel his gaze on her back.

‘Damn- did he think I wouldn’t do as he said? What is there to supervise?’

“The socks come off too.”

“Why?”

The man silently regarded her without a word, his hand on the door’s handle.

“Haha..haha, okay sir. The socks come off too.”, she cheerfully repeated. She couldn’t stop herself from adding that with a snarky voice but regretted soon after. She hoped he didn’t notice it.

He watched her till he was sure she was barefooted. Satisfied, he walked into the house ahead of her.

She saw he too, didn’t have his socks on.

“Miranda, you can call me Devin. Now, sit down. I’ll bring you something to eat.”, it seemed he was making a conscious effort to sound polite, though his deep, rumbling voice made her feel jumpy without rest.

Without waiting for her to reply, he went deeper into the house. Craning her neck, she saw a small hallway that must have led to the kitchen- or anything resembling it. She didn’t have much expectations from a man living alone. She knew it because she could see nothing in the house that indicated female presence. And it appeared emptier than empty- very few personal items could be seen.

Looking around, she found herself in the living room. The fireplace was alive with a vibrant yellow and red flame . The whole room appeared very cozy and warm. It was very sparsely furnished but the rug was quite soft and warm, and felt really nice to walk on.
