Chapter 1: A rude awakening

You wake up feeling strange.

Your arm's too short, your surrounding's too dark, and the sounds around you too loud yet too quiet and your head feels heavy. Like it’s been filled with a thousand crushed moonstones but empty all the same.  

You gaze up at the trees around you, a gesture you never remember having to do, and wonder why you feel so displaced.  

The grass beneath you feels rough on your skin as you struggle to stand, your legs weak and wobbling with every step you take.  

“Strange…”

You hear yourself whisper. Memories of running filtering through your brain but slipping through your grasp, leaving only the urge to move growing stronger and stronger in your mind.

One step, two steps, three steps….Wrong. You're doing something wrong but you’re not sure what. You turn the other way and start again. One step, two steps, three steps…right. Right. Something in your mind, an intuition, is sure this is the right way to go, this is why you woke up. 

 Time slips by and the sun goes down but you don’t stop walking.  

The sound of bugs resounds aloud in the otherwise deserted forest, and your head's lightened heaviness only encourages you to walk further north. 

The moon is already out when you stop before a large hallow tree that raises complicated emotions in you.  

There you stand momentarily, taking in the sight of wilting pink leaves and dark brown misshapen trunk. Like an old willow standing on its last leg. Drab and inconspicuous amongst the more magnificent pixie-oak and Elm. 

Wrong.  

“Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!”

A flash of pain rings through your skull and you cry out, kneeling down to clutch your head with the futile hope that it might cause some comfort. 

 

“M̶̟̪̞̟͇͊̿͗̈́̂͛͑͆̋̈́ͅÿ̵̡̛̙̜̘͚̙̫̭̦͎̘͒̍̑͝ ̵̧͓͈̱̺̔ḣ̷̨̨̧̤͉͓̻̮͖̞̯̱̣̿̊́͝ͅȏ̶̹̗̠͚͓͗̂̉̆͜ḿ̸̢̨͇̳̩͓̮̘̰̮̜̹̊̆̊̂͌̽͋͑̊̚͘̕̕͝ͅé̴̢͚̤̥̠̲͈͓͓͌͛͐̆̏͌̂̀͐̈́̔̀͒̕!”
