Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Fold-Out Bed

After dinner, we tried to figure out the sleeping situation.

“Ma-Matt and I can share my bed, and you two can sleep on the foldout couch,” I suggested to Maddy’s parents.

“Are you sure?” her mom asked. “We’d hate to put you out. We can just sleep on the floor.”

“Where’s Matt usually sleep?” her dad asked. “Is there a bed open?”

I rubbed the back of my neck, uncertain how Maddy would want me to answer. She usually just slept in my California king, but I wasn’t sure if she wanted her parents to know that.

“I’m not done moving in yet,” Maddy said hurriedly. “I’ve been on the couch. It’s fine, though. Steve’s bed is really big.”

“Well, he’s a big guy!” her dad said. “You sure it’s okay, son?” he aked me.

“It’s fine,” I assured them. “Not a problem at all. Here, let me get the couch set up.”

“Matt, aren’t you going to offer to help?” Maddy’s mom scolded. “I mean, we’re your guests, not Steve’s.”

“I don’t know where he keeps the sheets and stuff,” Maddy muttered. She still seemed quite unhappy and withdrawn.

“Well, I hope you’ve been helping out with chores around the place,” her mom said. She turned to Steve. “I’m sorry about him. He’s never been the best at keeping up with chores.”

“It really is fine. I don’t mind at all,” I said yet again. “Maddy, can you load the dishwasher?”

“Matty?” her dad asked, laughing awkwardly. “Sounds like a little kid. But I guess he kinda is, compared to you.”

Maddy quickly went off to the kitchen. She seemed glad for a reason to leave the room.

After I got the foldout bed set up, I headed to the kitchen, where Maddy had finished with dishes and was hunched over staring blankly at her phone.

“You okay?” I asked softly.

“Not really,” she said. “I can’t do this.”

“I can ask them to leave and stay in a hotel if you need,” I offered.

“No, they’d never let me live that down,” she said. “It’s… it’s fine. I’ll just try to be out of the house as long as I can tomorrow. I can hang out at the library or the coffee shop. Maybe I can see if Zoe is free. I mean, they’ll also be mad that ‘they came all this way and I can’t even be bothered to spend time with them’, but at least I won’t be here for most of that.”

“I can suggest some tourist attractions for them to go look at,” I suggested. “You’ve probably already seen them so that gives you a reasonable out without them wasting their trip here.”

“I guess,” Maddy said. “Probably a good idea. Thanks. Although it’ll probably make them like you more than me, even more than they already do.”

“I’m sure that’s not true,” I said. “I mean, I’m sorry. It’s clear that their presence is pretty painful for you, and they seem like they constantly judge you and find you lacking. But I’m sure that comes from good intentions and wanting the best for you. They just don’t know how to express that in a pleasant or productive way.”

“I guess,” she said, sighing. “Hopefully I can avoid my mom lecturing me about getting a ‘real job’. I know she thinks I’m a failure and thinks doing online art is the same as being unemployed, and she keeps sending me job listings or telling me about openings at companies that her friends’ kids work at.”

I decided Maddy needed a hug. Fortunately, the kitchen stool she was sitting on was tall enough that she was at a good height for it.

“I wish there was something more I could do to help,” I said.

Maddy sighed again. “Yeahh. I think they’re… they’re just like this. I know they don’t mean badly, but… I’m really remembering why I moved out in the first place.”
