Chapter 2—Bones in Snow (1.1)
by Bocchan13
Ye Zhou quietly opened the sliding paper doors, looking at the shambled walls and unkept room. His room led out to a small kitchen and living room where a fire pit was still glowing slight reddish embers. It was cold.
It was winter.
Ye Zhou had recollected a few details in his mind, but he was still overall unable to remember a few things.
Firstly, he was a slave in the large house of the Yuan Family, whose was closely related to the Emperor in terms of political power. Ye Zhou has been a slave since he was 5 years old, and travelled with his mother before settling down in the northern Yuan Family’s home where the family only came a few times a year.
His mother passed away a few years prior and he was left alone. Ye Zhou felt that something was missing in his mind, but couldn’t put his finger on it. Ye Zhou quickly washed his face by a bucket that was conveniently placed next to the table.
Ye Zhou figured that he was living with someone, but didn’t see anyone around him. He thought that since he couldn’t recall much about himself, he had to go out and figure it out. Outside, the world was blanketed in thick snow, covering 3 fingers deep. Ye Zhou took out his shoes and saw that there was a nice coat hanging on the pole next to the door.
Putting it on, Ye Zhou saw that the inside was lined with white rabbit fur.
Am I rich enough to buy something like this?
Ye Zhou felt complicated, but decided to put it on anyways. The coat covered his thighs, and inside the pockets were gloves that had seen a lot of wear and tear. Still putting them on, Ye Zhou opened the door.
Studying the outside, he knew that he was in the capital. The capital city was close to the border of the mountains that separated the barbarians. The Yuan family was responsible for maintain the border, so there was always a legitimate Yuan son who patrolled the lands.
Yet Ye Zhou could not recollect the man at all. As if his mind was permanently blocking his consciousness. Ye Zhou walked for a while and finally made his way to the main house. The servants were bustling quietly until they saw him.
A middle aged woman with frightfully bushy eyebrows glared at him, raising her fists.
“Lazy! Just because you serve the master, doesn’t mean you don’t have work to do at all! Now that he’s gone, you’re responsible for the entire household dishes!”
Ye Zhou was instantly taken aback, his brows furrowing in confusion. A small jingle reverberated in his head.
[Ye Zhou picked up various dishes from the ornately carved tables, and carefully placed them in a bucket to be washed. The snow was building up, so the servants hastened their workload, leaving Ye Zhou to finish the dishes alone at the watering hole by himself.
Ye Zhou exhaled loudly, causing a puff of smoke to escape to the heavens. He watched as the heated mist dissipated before rubbing his hands and going to a small fire pit nearby and stoking the coals gently. The bitter cold lessened slightly as he tied his sleeves back and pleated his long black hair.
He dunked his pale hands into the freezing water and winced slightly at the cold contact to his skin. He silently did the dishes, sometimes taking a few breaks to wipe his eyes. The lonesome figure in the middle of the watering hole looked pitiful, but no one was there to see the young man’s crying. The sourness in his nose intensified as the tears blurred his vision even more.
At last, the final dish was cleaned. Ye Zhou leaped from his hunched position and moved his shivering hands to the fire. His fingers prickled by the sudden heat, and he couldn’t help but move closer to that satisfying warmth.]
Remembering all of this, Ye Zhou straightened his spine, both eyes flashing. The usual meek manservant that was a continuous pushover was replaced by a sharply adept youth. Using no polite language, Ye Zhou scoffed.
“I did them all yesterday with nary a help from any of you. I stayed behind for 3 hours doing it.”
The miffed old lady sneered, “That’s what you deserve. Your precious master already has no use for you anymore!”
Ye Zhou’s eyes twitched.
Wasn’t the master everyone’s precious master? Ye Zhou didn’t understand at all.
“I’m not doing the dishes.”
Bushy face laughed gleefully. “We’ll see about that. The new mistress will be pleased to throw you out!”
Ye Zhou wanted to retort back, but like a powerful hand seized his lips, he could not utter a single word. Throat locking, eyes widening, he stared in horror as the rest of the maids and manservants trailed behind Bushy face, snickering at his aghast expression.
When they all left, Ye Zhou was finally able to talk again.
What sorcery was this?
A few minutes later, a young girl came down the corridor, her cute and petite figure glancing around until she spotted him. The girl breathed in sharply at the sight.
The young man eyes were downcast, his eyelashes shadowing his pure black irises. His long hair was tumbled in a loose braid, but that messiness only made his visage more vibrant. Pale skin and a red mouth, the only thing on people’s mind was if they could kiss it.
This man was absolutely beautiful.
The maid shook her head. No! This man was ruining the love of her mistress and master! She hmmphed and walked towards him arrogantly.
Ye Zhou sensed her presence and turned to see the new person. The maid jerked her head in dismay, “The mistress wants to see you.”
Ye Zhou could only helplessly follow.

The main layout of the courtyard was separated into north, south, east and west. The servant’s quarters were in the southern part, whereas the master and mistress would stay in the east. They walked quickly, but it still took a few minutes to reach the mistresses room.
Ye Zhou was suddenly enveloped in warmth. Inside the room, there were two or three heaters inside and a beautiful young woman was sitting up on a kang bed, sipping tea.
Ye Zhou still remembered his manners and went on his knees, kowtowing to the woman.
“Princess, this servant is here to serve you.”
The young woman was named Xing Li Mei, and was the adored princess to the current Emperor who married the current master of the Yuan Family, Yuan Chen.
When Ye Zhou recognized her and the subsequent master, his heart once again pounded in pain. He instinctively touched his heart.
The princess opened the curtains and took a long look at the man in front of her. The rumors were true that her husband and this commoner had been together since they were children. She heard the whispers of the servants that they had gone missing a couple of times to who knows where.
She knew that her husband did not love her, and yesterday on their wedding night, he only did his duty once before disgustingly leaving her with his seed and leaving the mansion.
“Lift up your head.” Ye Zhou slowly lifted his gaze, showing his deep black eyes, shining brightly in the dim morning sun. Even Xing Li Mei’s breath was caught. Such beauty would have become the most coveted courtesan of the capital.
He hid him well.
Xing Li Mei waved at him, “My husband has gone to the border and would not come back in a while. He has said that I am not allowed to harm you, turn you on the streets, or kill you. As he is my husband, I will follow his words.”
Ye Zhou was even more confused.
Like, what bro?
Ye Zhou could only bow down, gritting his teeth. For some reason, he disliked this demure and pure aesthetic!
“Thank you, Princess. I will continue to do my work diligently.”
“You may leave.”
Ye Zhou nodded, and stood up from his kneeling position. Bowing down deeply, he turned around and left.
The maid glared at him as he walked past and ran to her mistress, “Your highness! You don’t have to lower yourself for that cheap whore! He’s not worth it!”
Xing Li Mei gently stroked the maid’s hair, her gentle appearance even more fragile.
“I don’t, but I will. I love Yuan Chen, but I’m more scared of him that love him. If I can’t get his love, at least I can get his trust. That is all.”
It was love at first sight when she met Yuan Chen when they were younger, and she has harbored this love painfully for several years. Just when the emperor was arranging her marriage did she sneak out to see Yuan Chen.
The cherry blossoms were blooming that day as she hastily got into a sedan and scanned the trees, hoping to catch a glimpse of her love. She knew that Yuan Chen adored cherry blossoms and saw that this was their peak blooming time.
It didn’t take her long to find him. Decked in a gorgeous robe of green and blue, his heroic face and beautiful profile was in sight. She waved and was about to call his name when behind Yuan Chen emerged a beautiful man.
Only 16 years old, but his features were already gorgeous, with a long spiral braid dangling down his back, the only adornment was a beautiful red glass bead threaded in his hair. The young man laughed, his eyes crinkling into perfect crescents. Yuan Chen showed an unexpected soft and gentle expression as he picked a cherry blossom and tucked it into the boy’s ear, softly talking to him.
Xing Li Mei could not hear much, but the young boy blushed, the color mimicking the cherry blossoms that fell down around them. Her heart clenched as the young boy looked both ways before shyly getting on his tip-toes and kissing the man squarely on the lips.
Yuan Chen seemed not happy as his arms circled the young man and kissed him deeper, the large robe sleeves covering the young boy’s body until it looked like they were one.
When Xing Li Mei came home, she locked herself into her room and cried her eyes out. She cried for three days before calling the Emperor.
“I want to marry Yuan Chen.”
The Emperor was also in agreement. The Yuan Family was powerful, but they were always loyal to the throne. If it was both a political marriage and a love marriage, it would strengthen the bond even more.
Yuan Chen had declined the marriage. For eight years, he had declined until the Emperor put his foot down and made it a royal decree. A year after that, they were married.
Xing Li Mei came into this marriage knowing she was breaking up a relationship. But she too wanted happiness. Knowing that Yuan Cheng left immediately to the Border after their marriage was proof that he was angry.
Not just at her, but at Ye Zhou who stood aside watching this happen.
At least she had someone to commiserate with. Even though she was in the capital and could see her father and mother any time she liked…she predicted she would be left alone for the rest of her life.
