Matt felt as if the world was nothing but pain. The stupid demon emperor had truly terrified him, and every fight after arriving to the New World was painful, but the levels were plentiful too. However, he was terrified. Terrified of the things that had happened to Dante. Terrified that he decided to fight the emperor after much insistence from the other party to let them be.

He remembered. The emperor had told them to go away, that they shouldn’t be protecting those that can’t be protected, but he didn’t listen. And the end result was obvious.

Matt gritted his teeth, he felt miserable. He watched Dante die. He fought many monsters and yet was barely E rank now. He sighed. They had found a castle— a literal castle in the wilderness, and that’s where him and his party were staying. The surroundings were filled to the brim with birds and stupid animals, all of them E rank and hard to kill.

He was doing… fine. He hated things. He missed being a sales rep, he missed jacking off at 3 am when he had nothing better to do, he missed looking at the wall in silence or even just having dishes to make.

Matt sighed. He thought things would be over after the Skirmish, and now they were playing some type of game where there were walls between each continent. If they were even continents. The castle was next to one, it was just a bright wall of energy, and touching it burned his fingers.

It was a weird thing really.

Rain trickled against the glass windows. The castle itself was very gothic and medieval, full of swords and axes— things to use really. Though he also knew it was a castle from the demons since he saw one of their armor sets lying around.

It was weird to him, but he didn’t care to question the peculiarities of the system anymore.

The door opened and Samantha came into the room, familiar with raven hair, though now it was untidy and she wore armor instead. She approached him awkwardly.

Was something wrong?

“Matt, I was wondering if you’d be down to… do it…”

“Do it?” Matt quizzed.

“Hook up?”

Matt paused. “Didn’t you have a boyfriend or something?”

She snorted in reply. “Isn’t he most likely dead?”

There was a pause as he realized that he couldn’t even disagree. He never had a girlfriend, but admittedly, he wouldn’t count on her being alive either. Well, given the situation. A lot of things had happened. With that in mind, he opened his mouth:

“Let’s do it… in the master bedroom…”

“We agreed that no one gets the master bedroom because it’d be unfair, though?”

“No one needs to know.” And then he had a realization. “But, um… what if you?”

“It won’t be happening,” she reassured. “Look, I haven’t really had a period since the whole system thing.”

“It’s been like ten days,” Matt groaned.

“No, I was having my period and it suddenly stopped. Anyway, worst case scenario I stab myself and kill the—”

“It’s not happening!”

There was a brief silence between the two of them.

“Look, I know you admire Blair, but I still have morals…” Matt sighed. “I’m not, we are not gonna kill the baby if you do end up getting…”

She sighed. “Right, what was I thinking… Can we at least try it dry? No, you know…”

It clicked on him. “In the master bedroom, then?”

Samantha nodded quickly brightening up.

Just as they were about to stand up, they heard the rusty hinges rattle as the familiar knocks resounded across the castle. Andrea had gone outside. Samantha and Matt shared looks for a second before they both sighed.

“We can do it next time…”

Samantha quietly nodded as Matt headed to the main door and opened it. Only to pause.

It was a fox.

“Oh, there is someone here! Greetings, er…” it paused looking at him. “Human. I come from a different planet!”

Matt paused, as Samantha hovered behind. The fox even had a small tunic and a backpack too.

Should they let it in?

◇ ◇ ◇

All his life, he relied on teamwork, all of his life he walked side by side with him. And then, they stumbled upon a cave, both of them away from their pack. Ah, he recalled that cursed day. They both had spent so long getting stronger and becoming the respective leaders of their kin. And yet, that day everything changed. They had stumbled upon their callings simultaneously; the Sun and the Moon. Though he sensed that there was something wrong with both of the callings, in the end he rejected the Sun, and his brother took upon himself the Moon.

And that’s when everything changed, at first everything looked normal after rejecting the Sun, after the Moon was taken, but then he became aggressive, violent, ambitious. At first, he could only eclipse a small room in moonlight, eventually, it became the whole reverse mountain— the hidden paradise they had both found.

Eventually, his brother came with an offer for him to take the Sun, so that they could both rule their kin properly. But, his brother was different, so he refused. What came next was very unexpected— those of Blood were suppressed, but he was also indecisive, he didn’t want to take the Sun, in the end he simply gave up his freedom so that his kin could live a life of on their own in the surface.

Years passed. He also knew how that ended. A lot had happened the week before. In the deepest chamber a pillar had appeared, and the apex predators of the outside almost completely vanished. But, their home remained the same. He thought the pact was being upheld even in spite of the occasional death of his kin, that was until they died by the dozens. He was supposed to be protecting his brother’s aides, or now ex-brother. He rushed and encountered an intruder for the first time ever.

He spared the intruder, it was a different type of monster altogether. One that stood on two legs, and had limbs to manipulate things. It was a female. But she was also a bit weak? She had killed a Lower Moon so even though he could sense the blood of his kin on her, she was closer to a neutral party to him. He spared her, she was able to talk, and he could also sense his kin getting slaughtered.

After she hid once more, first thing he did was kill the stupid Upper Moon that was trying to boss him around, he had spent the entire day trying to fight him and being annoying. Next, he went on a rampage inside of the ravine, but even though he tried his best he was overwhelmed by the Moonfangs that had come after him— he ended up retreating to a cave he had made a long time ago, long before the Sun and Moon callings. And that’s where he found her.

The peculiar monster. She was now doing well, and seemed to also want to talk to him. He agreed to obtain her secrets, but instead he got the potion thing, so in an attempt to trade he explained the situation, but he got carried away. And to his surprise, she listened attentively, he found himself liking her, and in the end he couldn’t help but ask the passing traveler about her own situation. She did smell weird to him however, and soon he found out why.

He could somewhat relate to her situation, or well, he thought he would relate given enough time. At the same time he found out about a new world, and how she saw him due to The System, however it also gave him hope— hope that he who took the Moon could die— he wanted to help her, he wanted her help, admittedly, he was also captivated by some of the prospects.

Somehow, he found himself in a weird pact with The System, and he also saw a ball of light that proceeded to ask his name. He had no name. All he had was the Sun, and in the end, that’s what he called himself. Sun. Even though, he had rejected it— it was a funny and weird thing really.

Time passed, and he found himself feeling closer to the girl, Blair. To her situation, and to the fact she was alone. He helped her sort through her suppressed memories, through her everything, and reassured her. He cared for her deeply. And eventually, somewhat unexpectedly, even though she was in pain, she cared for him too, instead of herself.

That was weird. He didn’t know how he felt about it other than happiness. But she was vulnerable too, she was just being weird.

Time passed and he helped her train. She had come a long way, and even swiftly took out two Lower Moons— granted, they were in a very vulnerable state, but it was an impressive feat nonetheless.

And then, she fought an Upper Moon. He got to see her fight with one of his abilities, and he was impressed. She was strong and decisive. But the fight also confirmed to him that the Moonfangs had been forced into things, at least based on the little he saw. It made him angry.

Afterwards, The Guardian showed up unexpectedly, but all she had to do was evolve— he had faith in her—

She hadn’t evolved. He felt disappointed and sad, crestfallen, but if he could sacrifice himself so that she could live, and maybe guide his kin better then it was fine.

It took less than a few seconds, and the Guardian of the Moon suddenly had a plant wrap around its legs, and when he turned, his mind paused for a moment. She was shining under the moonlight, he felt worried but— she was sane.

She continued to trash the Guardian of the Moon as if he was nothing. That’s when he, Sun, realized that… He stood no chance against her now. Moreover, the way she shone with moonlight was captivating to him, maybe not in an attractive way, but just nature’s beauty way. It was new to him.

She tortured the Guardian of the Moon, and Sun was certain that if he was in the right conditions they could’ve killed it after the first six or so arrows. But, sadly that didn’t happen, instead, it ran and Blair couldn’t really chase. Her body had undergone the so-called strainful evolution that the ball of light had pointed out, but it was indeed strainful, he could just smell it on her.

In the end, they had to return to rest.

He didn’t know how it happened, but she smelled distinctly different. Maybe it was due to the evolution, but he thought he was different, and after a bit of chatting he found out that she remembered things now. He felt happy for her, but confused in how it had happened. But, he felt reassured too, she was sane and stable now.

And that was it, he saw her manipulate the plants once more which sparked another conversation. Which reminded him, he had to ask her about her goals now— and then he paused hearing the reply.

She still cared for him? It couldn’t be right. Nonetheless he accepted things elegantly and even relinquished the position of leader of Blood to her.

Except, he decided to get closer to her.

And that’s when things went awry.

He made her happy?

His head was in disarray even though he never showed it. He never felt some kind of emotional fulfillment in his life, and now he was happy about helping a girl that he met a few days ago at most?

He felt silly, and yet— he didn’t move.

He hoped to be able to help her more, even though she was stronger than him now.

He had become a Guardian for her Settlement in order to help his kind, but now, he felt happy to be a Guardian that could aid her. He felt happy that she was the leader of the pack. He felt happy that it was on her own volition and not some sort of twisted feelings or vulnerability.

But good things didn’t last long.

“He evolved.”

That’s all he got to say before the ground crumbled.

And soon, he found himself in a familiar chamber.

“Where are we?” she asked.

“A cave in the bottom-most chamber, the residence of the Moon,” Sun answered before going towards the rock.

He trusted her. He wanted to help too.

He had to take it.

[C Grade Calling: Eternal Sunlight

Radiance that shines in the eyes of others, admirable and ever present.]

He had a calling already, but even in spite of it, he just knew— his very being was meant for it. He closed his eyes for a moment, before touching it with his paw and prodding it with mana.

He wanted to help her succeed.

He wanted to be as strong as her.
