Spirits are natural ‘artificial’ souls. They are souls that appear spontaneously into the natural world, they have varying levels of intelligence, ranging from that of insects, to that of a human. However, it is a general trend that a spirit’s intelligence grows with time, though the rate of growth is dependent on their initial intelligence and individual differences.

Since spirits form as nothing but a soul, they are immortal, invisible beings. But as they grow, the mana they passively emit makes them visible to the naked eye. This immortality combined with their potential intelligence, leads to intense boredom in the later stages of their lives. Thus you will find, many of the stages of a spirits life are caused by this boredom.

A spirits life begins when they are spawned from nothing in an unimportant place. They then spend anywhere from hundreds to thousands of years wandering aimlessly depending on their intelligence. Eventually, they awaken consciousness and begin to actively make decisions, usually though, they continue to aimlessly wander about, except now it is to actively see their surroundings. From here, they continue to explore the world, but with a more human perspective on things. For example, one spirit would simply think the breeze is nice and it should follow it, or that the shade is wonderful and find themselves enjoying it until the tree is cut down. Another spirit that has already gone through this phase of life would curiously explore the world around them much like a child, instead of simply experiencing life, they would live.

However, this does not last long, as if there is any word to describe a child, it is not patient. These spirits quickly become bored  and begin to voraciously seek excitement, doing anything that interests them. This has gained them a reputation of being incredibly whimsical creatures, either playing tricks on unwary travellers, or enslaving themselves to your entire bloodline. You can never tell what a spirit will do next.

Valhalla:

Valhalla is one of the many stops on a spirits endless journey. It is a place where spirits, gods, demons and anything capable of arriving there come to fight to the death, only leaving once they have become the champion, or died.

It should also be noted that most living creatures level up passively at a rate of around one level every ten years. This is not very remarkable, but when coupled with the possible millennia a spirit is alive for, it makes for very high levels.
