Hey

Hey

What’s up?

Nothing much. I’ve got work.

Oh. What do you do for a living?

I completely forgot to ask.

Well, simply put, I work in IT.

IT?

That’s... a bit unexpected, but like, not in a bad way or anything.

You good with computers and such?

I’d like to think that I’m at least halfway decent at what I do

Because if I wasn’t, then I doubt I’d still have this job.

Oh right, you mentioned some conference.

How was it?

It was fine, but it’s not really my thing.

I got back late last night.

Oh.

And you overslept.

So, in hindsight, I guess we both should’ve just stayed in bed.

Soooo...

What?

You like shellfish?

I’m allergic.

That’s too bad.

I would've invited you to barbeque otherwise.

We’re planning to have one next weekend, probably.

With Old Bay, no doubt?

Duh. Best spice there is.

I mean, I’d still invite you but... probably not your scene?

Not really my thing, no.

How do you like your steak then?

Bloody.

Huh.

Didn’t expect that.

What?

You mistake me for some sort of herbivore?

Uh...

No?

You?

I like meat.

Medium rare.

What are your opinions about fish?

Fish is fine.

Shrimp is great.

Crab is excellent.

Sharks?

Never tried.

Is it good?

Was it good? Aidan had no idea actually, because he had never tried it – and trying it now would not really do it much justice, given that most things that passed for sustenance for humans had a tendency to taste like ash and make him incredibly sick afterwards.

Aidan wondered how to adequately explain this though, and to what extent it truly needed to be explained. And while he was debating this, another notification popped up, this one from the other one.

Morning sunshine, how’s it going?

Aidan had never once been called “sunshine” in his entire life – and with it having been a pretty long life, that was saying something. He was not entirely sure what to think of it actually. In a way, the irony of that statement was beautiful.

However, he was not entirely certain that he liked being compared to such a bright thing. Had any of his kind said such a thing to him, then it would have been the same as to say that it was painful to look at him.

This was a human though, and the sun had entirely different connotations to them.

It’s going fine. You?

Aidan looked at the message, considering it. Predictably, it did not take very long before there was a response.

Much better now that I’m talking to you. ;)

Hah.

Good for you.

Such a standard response, truly. It was a bit pathetic, actually. More eloquent than the first, granted, but decidedly less genuine as well.

Aidan sighed, looking out the window. Clear weather again today. Ugh.

Hm?

Something wrong?

Well, truth to be told, there was a whole bunch of things in Aidan’s life that could be sorted into the category of “wrong”. Still⸺

Oh, it’s nothing.

My uncle keeps spamming me with calls.

This was not a lie, technically speaking, because as far as current legal paperwork was concerned, the person in question was indeed Aidan’s uncle. Granted, this was not the only position that said individual had ever occupied in Aidan’s life. However, with the current paperwork as it was and Aidan keen on keeping his distance, he saw no reason to divulge any more about that, knowing well how strange such relations would sound to most humans.

Uncle? You’ve got family in the area?

Well⸺

I guess so, but we’re not close.

By choice. Aidan’s choice.

Estranged relatives, more like it.

On his end, at least.

Oh. And your uncle?

Well⸺

We don’t get along.

I tend to block his number when he gets too annoying though.
