It was a fine evening for Ben, he was going home after having a wonderful trip. The best part about the trip was that he didn't spend a single penny, and he was able to have a wonderful time as well. He drank a lot, gambled with some money that he borrowed from a friend, and was able to win it all back.

The best thing about this evening was the weather, there was a distinct smell of rain in the air, a cold breeze was brushing his hair as he traveled through a pathway surrounded by trees, and he had sneaked a little bottle of wine to the cart. This was the perfect evening for him.

I should probably look for an inn to stay, the sun is about to go down. I have some coins now, so maybe I should look for an inn that has a young wench who could do things for me, he giggled like the little girl from his thoughts. It was then his train of thought was disturbed when he started hearing a noise from behind. He turned around to see a very bizarre scene. His friend was shaking wildly while he was sleeping.

Is he having a nightmare? Looking at the shaking figure of Adui, he wondered. He was tempted to wake him up, shaking like this was not normal, at least not amongst common folk like him. But he wasn't sure about mana wielders like him.

He knows that mana wielders have a different physiology than normal folk like him. While working as a carriage driver for Gizelle, he once saw a knight whose skin was deep blue like the ocean, Adui told him that this was the result of some sort of blood magic, even with the peculiar features no one minded the blue skin of the man, everyone acted as if this was perfectly normal.

Even Adui acted as if blue skin is a common feature. Wait! This is different, there is no way that this is similar to having blue skin. He must be having a fucking seizure. I must save him! Ben decided to stop the carriage by the side of the road and stop, but it was then something heavy landed in the path of the carriage.

BOOM

The horses got scared by the sudden noise, he had to pull their reins pretty hard to make them calm down. As the dust settled down, he saw a giant piece of wooden log lying in their path, the most disturbing part was that the log was shaved from both ends, someone deliberately did this to block the road.

Before he could complete connecting the dots in his mind, he heard yells and screams from all around him. A bunch of people that were hiding in the woods came running toward him, one of them grabbed him by his shirt and pulled him down from the carriage.

People that surrounded him didn't waste a moment, as soon as Ben’s body touched the ground, they started beating him. It is only after receiving 3-4 blows from a club and two kicks on his stomach did they stop. Finally, one of the men grabbed him by his hair and dragged him to the side of the road, and presented him to their leader.

The leader of the bandit group was a fat man, his belly looked as if he was pregnant with twins, and with his greasy hair and big smug smile, he looked as Ben as if they were long-lost friends.

“Hello, old man.” Hearing the cheeky voice of the leader, Ben clenched his hands with anger.

SPLASH

Ben turned around to see that the bandits have dragged down Adui from the carriage as well. It was then he remembered that his friend was having a seizure before, he tried to get up and run towards him, but one of the men smacked him on his back as he tried. Now on his knees, he could only pray to the great Tibba that his friend was alright.

He only sighed with relief when he saw Adui getting up on his feet…

Adui wiped the mud off his face while staring at the people that surrounded him. “Oi! Let's go princess, boss is waiting.” One of the men said while pushing Adui forward. With small steps and limping all the way, he made his way toward the fat man.

Adui and Ben stood side to side, when the leader raised his arms, grinning while showing off his black, the fat man honored both of them. “Welcome my friend to your worst nightmare!” He then got up and took a giant ax from one of his men.

“We are the howling wolves. Have you ever heard about us?” Adui with a deadpan face immediately answered. “No.” While Ben’s face became pale, he had indeed heard about them, the fat man noticed it.

“It seems old man over here had heard about us.” Adui looked at Ben’s pale face and understood the situation.

After taking a round around both of them, the fat man came to Adui. “Now listen to me, stick man.” His not-so-clever play on Adui’s physique got some chuckles from his crew.

“You will hand everything that you have over to us. If we are satisfied with what you have, we will set you guys free. If not, then you guys will soon know the reason why we are called howling wolves. Understood?” Adui then came forward. “Listen. We are not..”

BAM

One slap from the fat man and Adui fell down on the ground. Ben who leaped to see whether Adui was alright, also received a kick from the fat man. “Rats like you should know their place! I didn't say that you could speak maggot! ” the fat man yelled…

Adui put his hand on his cheek, which was still stinging from the slap from earlier. At that moment in time he could not hear the chuckles of the bandits around him nor did he pay attention to the kick that Ben received. His sole focus was on the stinging pain of a slap. He was a mana wielder, not a great one, but he still was a powerful individual, more powerful than most people around him, then why was he on the ground and they were standing?

He couldn't accept this, he was a Mage, and he may not have any combat experience, but he still was a Mage. Then why? Why was he this weak? It was then he started remembering the nightmare that he was having. Those taunts, those voices told him that he was trash, but he didn't accept that, he fought back.

If I can fight back in a dream, so why not in the real world? Adui’s demeanor changed, his gentle eyes were now full of blood lust now, without anyone’s help he pushed himself up, he could do it now, after all, he had regrown his leg back.

The change in Adui's aura was noticed by the fat man, he smiled smugly looking at the determined face of Adui. In his long career as a bandit he had seen many people like him, these people are the ones that get killed first, they die because they make rash decisions whenever someone hurts their ego. And it looks like the stick man was angry that he hurt his ego. He tightened his grip on his ax, he waited for the fragile man to get up, after all, he could at least do that.

Adui glared at the fat bandit, he then raised one of his hands up. “Are you a follower of great Tibba?”. Getting entertained by him, the fat man smiled widely. “Why? Do you think that the great Tibba, the bringer of light would come to save you?”

“No. I don't believe in God. But, if he does exist, then think of my hand as his weapon of redemption for all the people that you have killed.”

The fat bandit started laughing as he looked at his hand. “This fragile hand of yours is the hand of God?”

“Yes it is, look at it carefully.” Everyone one of the bandits either started laughing or snickered, none of them took him seriously, even their leader didn't take the threat seriously.

Ignite. Seeing his hand catching fire made a few bandits stop in their tracks, leader of the bandits who was closest to him was astonished as he saw the fire. Before anyone could process what had happened, disaster struck.

Pyro. Adui’s hand suddenly started spewing large quantities of fire, and the bandit leader who was closest to him got caught in the crossfire, before he could even scream, the fire engulfed his head, killing him within a second. Seeing this display of power, most of the men got stuck in their place, they were too terrified to move.

One of them tried to swing his ax towards Adui, but he anticipated the attack, he instantly raised his free arm and spew fire on the attacker. Deliberately he kept the power of the fire under control, instead of instantly incinerating its victim, the fire started eating away the skin first, slowly.

The melting skin made the man scream with pain, hearing his cries some of the people instantly run away, only a few of them stayed. To instill fear in the hearts of howling wolves, he stopped burning the man. He let him suffer, he needed that man’s cries. He let the half-burnt man scream with pain and moved on.

While limping he took a few more steps, he glared at the people who had still raised their weapons at him but were maintaining some distance between them. He raised his hands once again. Energize. His hand started pulsating with blue color electricity, seeing all bandits take a step back. Electro.

Before anyone could react, a blue color electric bolt was spewed out of his hands, it wiggled in the air, bend multiple times in its trajectory, but it eventually made it toward the head of the nearest bandit, frying its brain. Seeing a man die with a litreal hole in his head terrified everyone, and everyone started running away from the monster they have encountered.

But Adui was not done yet, with his spell he struck down a few more people who were running away from him before he stopped for good

All these spells cost him a lot of mana, he did not want to get paralyzed due to mana deficiency so he stopped, otherwise he was not done yet. But it was then, he saw a man crawling nearby. Must have been too scared to run away. Poor man.

With small steps he made his way toward the crawling man, hearing his footsteps on the muddy road, the man started yelling for help, but no one came to his rescue. As Adui came closer, he took out his fancy walking cane, he loved that thing, and was the fanciest cane he owned, but it was the symbol of his weakness, and now the time had come to get rid of it.

He smacked the man’s head lightly from the end of the cane. The crawling bandit understood, this was the end of the line for him. He turned around and looked at Adui who was glaring at him with bloodlust. He started crying, he also raised his hands to surrender. Adui, on the other hand, snickered seeing this, just a moment ago he and his comrades were laughing at him, and now there he was lying on the muddy road begging for his life.

He grabbed his cane from the other end and raised it in the air, with the handle of the cane high in the air, he smiled at the man. “Hope you do something better with your life in your second life.” With all the force he could muster, he brought down the pointy handle of his cane on the man’s face.

SPLUCH

The pointy end pierced the man’s eye, and the whole area started reverberating with his screams and yells for mercy. But Adui was not done yet, he yanked the cane up again, and then smashed it again on the poor man’s head. And like that he killed the man by bashing his head with his cane. He only stopped the bashing when he saw that man’s skull had split open, his brain matter was leaking on the muddy road, and he was not screaming anymore.

He threw the cane aside and turned around. Ben was standing not too far away, looking terrified of what he had witnessed…

Ben had known Adui for a long time. And since he had known him, he knew he was different. In his long life he had served and watched many mana wielders, nobles, and many rich snobs, they all have one thing in common, all of them are a bunch of assholes. Even when a commoner like him becomes a mana wielder, their whole personality goes through a change, after getting the power they start to think that they are better than everyone else, and they become these entitled snobs which are like the kind of people with whom no one wants to hang out with.

But Adui was different, he was a good alchemist, a decent Mage, and quite influential as well. But he never showed any signs that he thought of himself above everyone else, and it is precisely because of this that everyone loves him back in Laverdale. But it seems because of his good nature, he had somehow forgotten who Adui really is, and today he was reminded who he really is.

There is a saying amongst the common folk, ‘I rather lose my money and wife, than go against a mana wielder’. Today he was reminded, why this saying came to be.

“Are you alright?” Adui’s question made Ben come out of his stupor. “Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. I am fine.”

“Let's get out of here.” Ben only nodded and followed him back to their cart.
