Mary's father relaxed at the living room, watching TV while sitting in his favorite recliner.
Mary entered the room and hopped on her father's lap, she wiggled around until she found a comfortable spot and sat silently watching TV with her dad.
After a few minutes Mary looked up at her father with her glossy black eyes.
"Daddy could you hire someone to teach me how to paint?" Mary asked her father.
"No." Her request was shot down faster than a child trespassing on a southerner's lawn.
"But how am I supposed to learn how to paint?" Mary asked while shaking her father's arm around.
"Figure it out." He yawned out, his eyes still glued on the TV.
Mary turned around in his lap so that she was fully facing her father, she then covered her father's eyes with her small hands.
"Mary, I'm trying to watch television." Sammy said.
"Figure it out." Mary replied.
"I'm wearing a belt, figure it out." Sammy replied.
"I'll call the police, figure it out." Mary not being one to back down, raised the stakes.
"By the time the police come I'd already be done, figure it out." Sammy said.
After of a few moments of silent dominance assertion, Mary removed her hands and hopped off the recliner.
"Good girl. Now be a sport and grab daddy a beer, will you?" Sammy said with a grin.
Mary walked out of the room and into the kitchen. She opened the fridge and took out one of the cold beers that took up an entire shelf.
She turned her head left and right before she "cracked a cold one". Bringing it up to her nose, she took a whiff of it's sweet fruity smell, she then brought it to her lips and took a small sip. After swirling the bitter tasting beverage in her mouth she swallowed it with some difficulty.
"Ugh.." after that profound remark, Mary proceeded to dump the entire contents of the can down the sink. She then grabbed another can, cracked it open and dumped it, and then she did it again.
A few minutes later, all the beer in the house had suddenly disappeared. Only empty cans were left behind in the fridge. A great mystery that will probably never be solved.
After a hard day at work Mary went to her room, changed to her white pajamas, laid and on her bed and drifted off to a dreamless sleep.
The next morning Mary woke up and after preparing for a new day at school she walked to the kitchen, only this time there was no scent of breakfast nor sounds of bubbling cooking oil on the stove. Only her father sat at the empty dinning table in silence as he read his news paper, only the sound of the turning pages echoed through the empty dinning area.
Mary walked up to dinning table and sat on the chair next to her father who paid her no mind.
"Dad where's breakfast?" Mary took hold of her father's sleeve.
"There isn't any." Sammy said before turning a page on his news paper.
"But why? I'm hungry..." Mary shook his sleeve.
"Apparently, yesterday someone broke in and stole all our food, so no breakfast today." Sammy replied, his eyes still glued to his newspaper.
Mary slumped over the table. Staring up at her father.
"Who even reads news papers anymore?" Mary remarked.
"People who like to stay informed." Sammy replied.
"It was a rhetorical question." Mary said.
"And I gave you a rhetorical answer." Sammy replied.
Mary let out an exaggerated sigh.
"Keep sighing like that and your hair will turn grey before mine." Sammy remarked with a smirk.
"You'll be worm food before my hair turns grey." Mary replied.
"Well then I wish you'll at least let me see my grandchildren before that happens." Sammy said.
"Ew no." Mary replied.
"Oh? do you think boys are disgusting?" Sammy asked with a smile.
"I think everyone is disgusting." Mary corrected.
"Even your dear pappy?" Sammy asked while holding his hand over his heart.
"Especially my dear pappy." Mary replied emphasizing the dear part in her sentence.
"Ugh, so heartless..." Sammy said while wearing an over exaggerated pained expression on his face.
Sammy's ears twitched before he turned to Mary, "Looks like your school bus will be here in just a minute."
Mary got up and grabbed her school bag, "Was that your neurolink going off?" Mary asked.
"Yeah, I still haven't gotten used to it." Sammy said as he also got up.
"I wish I could have one." Mary said as they both walked to the apartment door.
"Wishing isn't very scientific, sugar plum." Sammy said as he opened the door.
"It's also illegal to install one before the age of 25." Sammy added as he closed the door and they both walked to the elevator at the end of the hallway.
"You're a surgeon, you can do it." Mary suggested as she pushed the elevator button.
The elevator doors opened. "And get a life sentence? no thanks." Sammy replied as they entered the elevator.
Pushing the button numbered as 1, the elevator doors closed behind them.
"That long?" Mary looked up at her father and asked.
"Off course, it's illegal brain surgery, illegally preformed body modification, child abuse and child endangerment. I'd get a lesser sentence if I robbed a bank." Sammy said.
"Wow that's harsh..." Mary remarked.
"Nope, I'd say it's perfectly fair, a neurolink installed in a brain that's not fully developed has consequences ranging from minor brain damage to complete brain death. That's why you can only get one after the age of 25." Sammy explained.
"So I have to wait 18 years?" Mary asked.
The elevator stopped and the doors opened. The father daughter pair walked into the lobby.

"It's alright sugar plum, it'll pass in the blink of an eye." Sammy patted Mary's head.
"Ugh you're ruining my hair." Mary said as she swatted his hand away.
"Plus neurolinks are over hyped in my opinion, you're only missing out on instantaneous access to the internet using your brain, telepathy and the complete removal of all language and communication barriers." Sammy said while counting with his fingers as they walked out of the building.
A few seconds later the school bus arrived Infront of the pair.
"So convenient." Sammy remarked with a smile.
"I can't wait for the day I can put you in a retirement home." Mary said before she got on the school bus.
"Love you too!" Sammy said while waving goodbye as the bus drove away.
Mary rolled her eyes before taking her usual seat in the middle row of the empty bus. Looking out the window, Mary watched the scenery pass by.
All was quiet, the bus she was riding in, the cars that drove by. It truly was the future, orderly and silent.
Mary looked towards the front of the bus. No bus driver. All transportation vehicles were self driving, one could still drive their car but not many bothered to do so.
Mary looked out the window and saw a woman sat at the front seat of her car applying make up to her face.
The quiet ride didn't last long as more and more kids were picked up, soon enough the bus was full of their chatter as they all talked over each other.
Today they seemed even more lively than usual as they all surrounded a certain black haired, round glasses wearing boy.
The boy was none other than Louis Archen who was showing all his new friends some of his other drawings as they all asked him all sorts of questions.
Mary leaned her head on the window and let it's small but frequent vibrations accompany her until they finally arrived at school.
Walking into class, Mary took her usual seat at the middle row and took out her books.
"Louis! Come sit next to me!" Mary flinched from the sudden shout. It was not the last one however as it seemed to only dunk oil on a fire as everyone and their grandmothers started shouting at the stunned boy to come sit next to them.
Eventually the ruckus died down once the boy shyly took a seat next to Tonya.
Soon after, the teacher arrived and the lesson kicked off.
Once it was time for recess, Louis was surrounded by almost all his class mates once again, almost.
"Thanks for helping me braid my hair Mary." Jamie said as she sat on Mary's lap who sat on a swing.
"Thanks for letting me b-braid your hair." Mary said while pinching her nose, making her voice deeper.
"Ahahaha, Sounds like something Louis would say." Jamie said.
"What's something Louis would say." Tonya asked as she suddenly appeared.
"Oh. Hi Tonya! Had enough of your boyfriend already?" Jamie asked.
"He's not my boyfriend!" Tonya stamped her foot.
"Tonya and Louis, sitting under a tree.." Mary started.
""K.I.S.S.I.N.G"" Jamie and Mary chanted in sync.
"We didn't!" Tonya said.
"Lighten up, it's just a joke." Mary said.
"Not funny." Tonya replied.
"It's hilarious." Jamie said with a grin.
"It's really interesting huh?" Mary said while looking at the direction of the rest of her classmates.
"What is?" Tonya asked before Jamie could make another jab at her.
"Yesterday no one would talk to him, today everyone is all over him." Mary said.
"That's because they didn't know how cool he is." Tonya said.
"Oh Louiaugh-" before Jamie could finish her sentence Mary pulled on her braid.
"Exactly, they didn't know he was talented before, and now suddenly they all want to be his friends. why do you think that is?..." Mary asked
"Oh, they're fakes, I have to tell Louis!" Tonya exclaimed before turning on her heal and trying to march towards the crowd of kids. Before she could take a single step a hand grabbed her by the back of her collar.
"If I were you I would worry about myself." Mary said while keeping a steady grip on the girl.
"What about me?!" Tonya asked while trying to remove Mary's hand that held her collar.
"Just calm down and think. Louis will sooner or later realize that all those people aren't his friends and when that happens he'll blacklist everyone who's currently standing in the same group you were standing in just two minutes ago." Mary explained.
"But we're friends!" Tonya said after she stopped resisting.
"Friend? More like giraugh-" Jamie tried to open her mouth again but had her hair pulled once more.
"I know that's what you think, but can you guarantee that Louis thinks the same?" Mary asked after letting go of Tonya's collar.
"Yes! I'm his only friend!" Tonya turned to Mary and said while staring at her straight in the eyes.
"You were his only friend." Calm black eyes met Tonya's blazing green ones.
Small tears started to roll down Tonya's cheeks "What should I do?.." she asked.
Mary got up of the swing pushing Jamie aside. She stood Infront of Tonya and gently wiped her tears away with a soft smile and eyes.
"Don't cry, there's a way you can stay as friends." Mary whispered.
"I'll do anything." Tonya said.
"Ok, but it'll be hard. Do you still wanna do it?" Mary softly asked.
"Yes." Tonya gave a strong nod.
"Perfect, all you have to do is completely ignore Louis for a month." Mary said.
"..Ok." Tonya slowly nodded
"Just kiss already!" Jamie shouted from behind.
The bell rang once again, signalling the end of recess. As Tonya walked away a wide smile slowly spread across Mary's face.
"Hm? Why are you smiling?" Jamie tilted her head and asked.
"Oh, I just thought of something funny.." Mary replied as she started walking.
"Is it a funny joke? Tell me! Tell me!" Jamie asked as she followed behind.
