Chapter 4: 4. Strategic Retreat

Outside, the three elders and one Su Yan couldn’t believe what they saw.

“Cough. Ehm. The treasure tries to adapt to the subject’s state of mind. When little Li rejected the woman and called her a demon, it could only try to adapt.” Said the man with a straight face. “But that doesn’t matter. Congratulations little Yan, your brother really passed the test!”

“What about the second one?” Asked Su Yan’s master. But the man shook his head with a smile.

“Only true masters can pass the second test. There’s no need to prolong the matter.”

“But wouldn’t it be beneficial for him?” Su Yan’s master insisted.

This time, the man fell into deep thought. “The experience may help him or harm him. He can’t make a conscious decision himself because he has no idea what is going on.”

“Elder.” Su Yan bowed deeply. “I believe in my brother, and hope you can allow him to experience this opportunity!”

“… This…” The man tried to gain support from Su Yan’s master, but seeing her steady gaze, he gave in with a sigh. “Very well. The second test will start soon, we only need to wait.”

Inside the illusion, Chen Li was still trying to find a way to get out of the dream demon’s trap.

“If killing it doesn’t work, shouldn’t I just destroy everything?” He muttered under his breath. He felt as if the cage around him was getting smaller and smaller.

Then, he saw her! Even from far away, with her graceful steps, he would always recognize her!

Chen Li suddenly frowned. ‘She really looks like…’

Chen Li froze. He remembered!

Outside the illusion, Su Yan’s eyes shook. The three elders of the sect stared at the dark screen in silence.

Su Yan knew her brother had a strong will. She even had some confidence that he could pass the first test!

But wasn’t this a bit exaggerated? A 13-year-old would choose death instead of an illusion? Could he be a reincarnator just like herself?

Su Yan rejected the idea after giving it some thought. How could a family have two reincarnated children? Besides, her brother’s cultivation was too poor, there was no way a reincarnated expert could give up cultivation as his brother did.

A voice from the shadows broke the silence. “I thought something was going on for junior sister to leave the sect, but I didn’t expect things to be so interesting…”

Was this man, showing killing intent just because of her brother?

Elder Feng opened his mouth a few times as if to say a few things, but didn’t or couldn’t. “Congratulations senior brother for finding such an outstanding disciple.” After a deep bow, elder Feng disappeared without a trace.

The mysterious peak master put his hand on Su Yan’s shoulder. “In the future you can come at any time to visit your brother!”

Su Yan’s master sighed. Su Yan herself had some questions of her own, but before she could ask them, Chen Li started groaning.

“F***ck…”

“… Brother.”

“Hmm?” Chen Li tried to get up. What had happened just now? It felt as if he had a bad dream… With a pornstar?

Though it was dark, Chen Li could tell the man’s facial features were elegant and symmetrical. The black Daoist robes he wore only served to enhance his scholarly feeling. Beside her was a woman, though much more modest compared to the ones he saw in the dream. And between the two, was Chen Li’s sister Su Yan. Who was looking at him as without expression, as per usual.

‘Wait, I was in a test?’ Fragmented memories came back. ‘Oh sh*t, yeah, there was a demon…’

“Wait, hold up, master?” It felt as if Chen Li had missed an important piece of dialog!

The man’s smile widened just a little as he nodded enthusiastically.

‘Something’s wrong. My talent is super-duper average. Is it because of Su Yan?’

Chen Li stood up from the bed and immediately gave a Dao salute to the man who claimed to be his master. “Senior, this Chen Li apologizes for his unsightly behavior just now. The opportunity that senior offers me, I’m afraid it is too valuable for a person like me. However, compared to me, my sister is incredibly talented. I beg the senior to take her in my stead!”

In Chen Li’s mind, they were probably here for her anyway! But perhaps Su Yan at her young age couldn’t bear to leave her family, so it was Chen Li who automatically drew the short stick!

Chen Li lifted his head to see if he was hearing things right. Could it be that he was something hearing voices? However, it really looked like the person who called himself master was talking. The words really came out from his mouth. He really moved his lips.

Upon reevaluating the situation, Chen Li realized he couldn’t discern the other party’s intentions.

They should be here for Su Yan, that much was obvious. But there wasn’t anything to gain by roping in her brother. So what if he passed a test? His aptitude was low enough that he pretended to be average just to make himself feel better!

However, since push came to shove, he couldn’t back out. Any more rejection and it would her sister that get affected!

“D-Disciple Chen Li greets master.” He said in a daze. He kowtowed too. Three times! Just in case.
