Chapter 2: Vampirism is...

"And, vampirism is a great way to remain young and fresh forever. Plus, all vampires can learn necromancy..." Ossilo resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Octavian had been talking his ear off for the better part of an hour. If the man's skeletons were not just outside the castle, Ossilo would have gone and left.

"Sorry to interrupt you, Octavian, but how do you know we are soulmates?" Ossilo asked, trying to hint at the necromancer that such silly notions as soulmates were not something he believed in.

Octavian tilted his head, his golden orbs peered at Ossilo from behind his glasses. Ossilo liked to call this the silent treatment stare. Where Octavian will stare him down, until he was allowed to babble again.

"Anyway, vampirism is..." Octavian continued after a while. Ossilo huffed, and the necromancer quieted down again.

"I won't let you turn me into a blood sucking piece of scum," Ossilo snapped, and Octavian frowned at him.

"I'd rather not have to restrain you, soulmate. Also, I don't like your tone. Half of my family is made up from vampires," Octavian told him, and his hand went to touch Ossilo's cheek. "You are so pure that I just want to taint you. How can you be my soulmate, if you are not a creature of the night?"

"Precisely," Ossilo caught on the straw that was offered to him. Like a drowning man who had no other choice. "The spell misfired. I am not your soulmate. Now, do, please return everyone's mana, and I can be on my way."

"Where to, you said that there was a riot, right?" Octavian had been listening to Ossilo, it seems. He had just not wanted to show it until it was to his advantage.

"This castle will be under attack once people figure out you stole their mana," Ossilo said, trying to edge away from the hand that was making circles on his cheek.

"I have an army," Octavian retorted, unconcerned. "Now, about vampirism..."

"No, no more about vampirism," Ossilo stood, his chair flying back. "I won't hear another word about it. If you think we are soulmates, then you have to accept me the way I am."

"But you will die," Octavian whined. "Age, then die. Even elves die."

Ossilo's nostrils flared at that. Just what was this man planning for him? That he was going to hold him prisoner in this castle until Ossilo caved to his demands?

"That is natural," Ossilo snapped, and Octavian stood up then. The necromancer's eyes were narrowed, and his hands shot to Ossilo's shoulders, to hold him in place.

"It is not natural for soulmates to be parted by death," Octavian yelled, and Ossilo blinked at the outburst. Octavian had been calm, so far. What had brought upon the change?

"Return the mana to the people," Ossilo still stood his ground. He was an elf, even one who lived among humans. He had his pride.

"They are not getting even a single point," Octavian spoke through gritted teeth. Then, the necromancer turned around, and a skeleton appeared in the doorway.

"Jim will take you to your apartments," Octavian told him, not looking back at him. "Have pleasant dreams. Do think on what we spoke of."

With that, the necromancer left the spacious hall. The skeleton's bones creaked and Ossilo shivered. It was unnatural, what the necromancer was doing. Playing with the dead like this.

The skeleton waited for Ossilo to reach it, and then moved out of the doorway. They passed by another hall, full of paintings. The people on them were all pale, like Octavian. Some, though, had milky-white skin. A sure sign of vampirism.

Ossilo followed the skeleton up a flight of stairs, and found himself before a big double door. It had vine patterns carved on the wood. Pine, by the looks of it.

Jim, Ossilo was fairly certain that was the name of the skeleton, opened the door for him, and Ossilo stepped inside an entrance hall. He could feel the mana humming all around him. This living area had an extension charm on it.

The skeleton closed the door behind him, and Ossilo went to explore. He saw that there were three doors. He went to the closest to himself.

Opening it, he found a library inside. Most of the tomes had necromantic mana coming off them, but he felt a couple of healer tomes in the mix.

Curious as to what sort of knowledge they held, he went and picked the nearest one. It said: A guide to heart conditions. Deciding that it was interesting enough, Ossilo took it with him to a plush armchair, and sat down.

Minutes turned into hours and, before Ossilo knew it, he was yawning. The tome was very engaging. With many case studies and various moving pictures. He had learned a thing or two.

Such as that there was something called broken heart syndrome that was caused by stress. It had similar effects to a heart attack, but was reversible. He just hoped that he didn't get it, for, if he did, he was blaming Octavian for it.

There was also a form of an angina that had to do with a broken steady supply of blood to the heart. Apparently, the blood vessels went into a spasm. He was glad that the chance for him to get it was small, as it was more common in women.

The thing about healers was, that, they would think most sicknesses were something they could get, if the gender and normal requirements matched.

Ossilo suffered from this just as the rest of his kind. Placing the book down, he searched for something to mark his progress. There were book markers on the table next to the chair.

He picked up one, and held it to the candlelight. It was a work of art. Silver and in the form of a stick, it had small roses engraved on it. Ossilo placed the book marker in the book, and went in search of the bedroom.
